?Surviving Compton? aired this past weekend on Lifetime and got mixed reactions.
The story is about Michel’le Toussant and her abusive relationships with both Dr. Dre and Suge Knight.
The one-time R&B star (1989?s ?No More Lies?) dated Dr. Dre in the early 1990s, when he and N.W.A. were on the road to stardom. ?The couple lived together and?had a son in 1991. ?Oddly enough, Michel’le later married Dre’s Death Row Records counterpart, Suge Knight, with whom she had a daughter in 2002 (they divorced in 2005).
Michel’le is back with a new single called ‘It’s Nothing’ and she’s also released an official video for the track.
The song, a powerful testament of the personal evolution of the songstress, showcases her innate ability to pen a ballad and sing from the depths of her soul.
Michel?le?s rich vocal style shines through on this emotional ballad that speaks of a woman who chooses herself over the unhappiness of a failed relationship. ?It?s Nothing,? describes the dismissive way in which she lets her man know it?s nothing for her to walk away from something or someone who hurts her.
In the video Michel?le shows fans why she is the woman that music lovers of all races, genders and ages can relate to. This vocal powerhouse contradicts her title as an R&B Diva; which brings to mind over-the-top glam; instead she saw the vision of the video producer, Brooke Coleman, who wanted to showcase the emotion of the song and Michel?le?s natural beauty. This was more than accomplished by featuring Michel?le in a relaxed setting with minimal make-up. All you get is raw emotion and in your face vocals.
This show is clearly a launchpad for the talented individuals, who otherwise would be chugging along on their own without television as a promo tool.
City High’s Claudette Ortiz even revealed during a recent interview with Bossip that she was homeless during her musical hiatus and practically living in her car prior to landing her role on the show.
Prior to the show, I had really hit rock bottom and I was at a crossroads where I just had to [do the show]. All the little odd jobs that I was doing?were not enough to raise my children. So, I had to make a choice of am I going to continue going this way?
I was having a rough night. I had to leave the place I was at, and I was driving with the things in my trunk and my kids were asleep and I had nowhere to go. And that night Phil Thorton (producer) from the show texted me, but that night I was upset and I was crying.
R&B Divas: L.A. is like a breath of fresh air in comparison to it’s Atlanta predecessor and hopefully it will give the ladies the platform they need to share their talents.

Remember Michel’le from back in the day? The singer had a squeaky, high-pitched speaking voice which totally changed once she opened her mouth to sing. Anyway, the old school singer has filed child support charges against her ex-hubby, Marion Suge Knight and is seeking over $40,000 of unpaid court-order spousal and child support for their 7 year old daughter, Balei (pictured above):
Singer Michel?le?has filed child support charges against her Ex-husband Marion Suge Knight, reports the Wall Street Journal. Michel?le is asking for $40,476 in three-months of unpaid court-ordered spousal and?child support.? In addition to the $40,476,?she is asking that she receive $13,492 in child support each month for?her?child Balei, whom she had with?the former head of Death Row records?seven years ago. In 1997, Toussaint ?agreed to marry Knight while he was serving a prison sentence for assault and battery.? Soon after Bailei?s birth in 2002, her? relationship with Suge Knight ended.
In the coming months, Michel?le will be? heading to bankruptcy court since?Suge?is believed to be bankrupt; Suge filed for bankruptcy?three years ago.
Michel?le?also has another son named Marcel, with whom she had with rapper/producer?Dr. Dre. (Source)
A lot of people are surprised to hear of Michel’le’s links to both Dre and Suge but she and Dre were in a longterm relationship way before he even left the World Class Wrecking Crew. Michel’le was even featured on a WCWC song, “Turn off the lights” and her 1st CD album was produced by her then boyfriend Dre. I’m almost positive her relationship with the both of them was one of the factors in Death Row’s demise.
