I can honestly say that DOPE was a great film! Zoe Kravitz, Elise Neal, ASAP Rocky, Quincy Brown and several other notables contributed to the film and these young stars totally made this story come to life.
Billed as a ‘coming of age comedy/drama for the post hip hop generation,’ DOPE creates a intriguing story about Malcolm (Shameik Moore), a geek, carefully surviving life in The Bottoms, a tough neighborhood in Inglewood, CA.
Malcolm pays homage to hip-hop culture by rocking a high-top fade and 90’s inspired attire, while making his way through a neighbor hood filled with gangsters and drugs dealers.? He’s in his senior year of high school and a straight ‘A’ student with dreams of attending Harvard, but is a walking hood ‘cliche’ in that he’s a Black male being raised by a single mom (Kimberly Elise) in the hood.
A chance invitation to a big underground party for a local drug dealer (ASAP Rocky) leads Malcolm and his friends into a gritty adventure filed with offbeat characters (for example, rapper Kap-G stars as a bootleg designer bag dealer moonlighting as a money launderer).
Without giving away too much, Malcom and his geek friends get unintentionally involved in the dope game, but the story that transpires is totally uplifting and the surprise ending will leave you cheering for the ‘DOPE’ geeks!
***Special thank you to Kawan “KP” Prather and Nick Nelson (Liquid Soul) for the screening invite 🙂

ABOUT DOPE:
A critical hit and audience favorite out of the Sundance Film Festival, in DOPE, Malcolm (Shameik Moore) is carefully surviving life in a tough neighborhood in Los Angeles while juggling college applications, academic interviews, and the SAT. A chance invitation to an underground party leads him into an adventure that could allow him to go from being a geek, to being dope, to ultimately being himself.
Directed by Rick Famuyiwa, Produced by Forest Whitaker, Executive Produced by Pharrell Williams and Co-Executive Produced by Sean Combs. Not only does DOPE pay homage to the Hip Hop classics from the 90s, but it will also feature four new original songs by Pharrell.
DOPE hits theatres June 19, 2015.
