Word on the curb is that Mark Zukerberg, the creator of Facebook (the world’s most popular social networking site) is considering pulling the plug on the site and has set a date of March 15th!
If true, this would leave a gazillion disgruntled facebookers in the dark, with no more wall posts, no more photo stalking, no more…
Fortunately it’s all just a hoax.
A site called The Weekly World News posted a convincing story called “Facebook Will End March 15th”.? The internet rumor quickly spread even though the report originated from a website which also includes stories insisting “Alien spaceships to attack Earth in 2011” and another titled “Mike Tyson Pigeon Fetish.” Both of which should have been obvious red flags…
According to their bogus Facebook story, the super popular social media website will shut down March 15th because founder Mark Zuckerberg, who holds the honor of Time Magazine’s 2010 person of the year, is too stressed out.
“Facebook has gotten out of control and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life,” the newspaper quoted Zuckerberg as saying at an alleged press conference in California on Saturday.
They also quoted Zuckerberg of being disenchanted by the limelight, preferring to drift back to his days of obscurity.
“I don?t care about the money,? said Zuckerberg. ?I just want my old life back.?
The story went quickly went viral and sent Facebook users into a panic. The phrase “is facebook shutting down” was the 14th most searched for on Google Saturday and the 10th most as of Sunday morning.
On Facebook itself, groups like “Against shutting down Facebook on 15th of March” popped up with the slogan “No Facebook, No Party”.
On Twitter, some users fretted about what would happen to their pictures, not to mention social lives; while others seemed to rejoice in the fact that Facebook would be disappearing:
Many began to make alternate plans, saying they would move their information to MySpace, Twitter or a new service, like the one Google is rumored to be working on.
On Sunday night, Facebook put the rumors to rest by sending out a tweet:
The rapidly spreading rumor also had many ridiculing people’s fanatic addiction to the social networking site, used for everything from posting pictures, party invites and showing off how many friends that people have. One twitterer struck out against that stupid “numbers game” that was going around…
Rest assured….Facebook isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, so you all have plenty of time to upload more embarrassing pictures and videos.
Just try not to piss off your family member by pretending to be gangsters….
