Jorelys, who’d just turned 7 on Aug. 20th, disappeared when she took a break from playing at the apartment complex on River Ridge Drive. She reportedly told other children at the playground that she was going inside to get drinks, but never returned.
At the time of her disappearance, Jorelys mother was inside while the child played outside, but a teenager was supposed to have been watching her.
Early in the case it had been revealed that the girl’s two younger siblings had been taken from their mother and placed in protective custody because of a lack of supervision, casting suspicion upon the mother in the disappearance.
Canton police launched a search for the girl late Friday evening, knocking on doors in the neighborhood and even interviewed registered sex offenders.
Police had been searching the apartment complex throughout the weekend, when the little girl’s lifeless body was discovered on Monday in a trash bin near the apartment where she lived.
Jorelys died of blunt force trauma to the head and stab wounds, the GBI said Tuesday. She had also been sexually assaulted.
Now… just two days after the gruesome discovery an arrest was made in the case.

A 20 year old maintenance worker has been arrested and charged with the murder of the 7 year old girl.
According to the AJC:
GBI Director Vernon Keenan identified the man as Ryan Brunn, who was taken into custody around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. The suspect has been assigned two public defenders and has a first court appearance Thursday.
Keenan said Brunn lived at the River Ridge apartment complex where Jorelys lived and was killed, and had been a maintenance worker there. Tips from the public led investigators to Brunn, Keenan said.
Calling the killing “planned and calculated,” Keenan declined to discuss evidence leading to the arrest. But said the investigation is not over. “This is a mammoth case.”
Brunn, who has no known criminal record, had been under police surveillance since Tuesday evening, Keenan said. He had been employed at the complex since Nov. 7, John Bankhead, GBI spokesman, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Investigators will now re-trace Brunn’s history at previous addresses and in another state, Keenan said.
Keenan said Brunn had been charged in the killing, and additional charges may be filed by the Cherokee County District Attorney’s Office.
“We are confidant that Brunn is the killer, that’s why he’s in custody,” Keenan said when asked if there are any other suspects.
Investigators said they believe Brunn abducted Jorelys within the vicinity of the playground, where she was last seen around 5 p.m. Friday. From there, Brunn allegedly took the girl to a vacant unit at the apartment complex, where it is believed he sexually assaulted her, beat and stabbed her, police said.
Brunn allegedly then put the girl’s body into a trash bin at the complex, which was later compacted. The body was discovered Monday. Because of his employment at the complex, Brunn had access to the compactor on the trash bin, Keenan said. (source)

i knew it was some sick bastard that was watching her to see when they could attack… i just hope that they got the right person and I dont understand why in the hell could you not check the maintenance person out before you hire them if he is the one that actually did that. But its a lot of pedophiles around and they lurk and be watching the children. I blame both this evil bastard and the child’s mother. I blame the mother because if she had gotten off her lazy ass and watched her child then maybe this demon would not have gotten her. The story says the woman’s other children got taken away from her due to lack of supervision.

This is a horrific crime, but I would never blame the mother for letting the child do something that is natural to let them do at this age which is go outside and play with friends in a general area where she is within sight. You can’t even blame the teen assigned to keep an eye out, it is also "NOT" they’re fault, because it was when the child separated herself from the group to go inside for a break that the sadistic killer struck. If it had not been her,it would have been another child, because he already had it in his mind to do this horrible deed. Blaming the mother won’t bring this beautiful little girl back but, Warning comes before destruction and her losing her two other kids due to the lack of supervision should have been a wake up call, now this little girl is dead. Allowing young kids to roam alone is no longer the norm because of so many monsters out there.
Uhm Im sorry but this mother who had other children taken away from her because of a lack of supervision should have exercised better judgment with this child. If she was sleeping and needed a sitter it was her duty to get adequate supervision for the 7 year old rather than leave her with a teen. I empathize for her loss but I hope that before the state gives her the other 2 children, they make sure she can take care of them

Thank you, Veronica… I do empathize with her over her losing her child, but like the story says, this happened previously; and to leave a young child with a teenager like that, given the conditions of the past and the world today, it is the mothers fault. As far as the teen, if s/he cared, s/he could’ve taken the child with them to get something to drink.
