  • WTF?! Pic of the Day ~ Racist Obama T-Shirts Sold in Georgia Bar

    Posted by ATLien - May 13th, 2008
Published in I Hate Cobb County, Pictures, Pure Foolishness

    (Images via AJC)

This is one of the many reasons why I rarely set foot in Marietta and I feel sorry for those of you who have to live there.  Mulligan’s Bar & Tavern in Cobb county has printed up racist t-shirts featuring cartoon chimp Curious George peeling a banana, with “Obama in ‘08″ printed underneath and are selling them in the bar.  The owner, Mike Norman thinks there’s nothing wrong with the T-shirts and calls them ”cute.”

Norman said those offended are “hunting for a reason to be mad” and insisted he is “not a racist.”

Why picture Obama as Curious George? “Look at him . . . the hairline, the ears, he looks just like Curious George,” Norman said.

He said it’s just a coincidence that the character he chose for the T-shirt is a monkey. Norman said proceeds raised from sales of the T-shirts will be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. (Source)

Y’all can keep walking around like racism doesn’t exist if you want to!  Check out other disturbing images from Mulligan’s Bar after the jump…

This guy is full of shit…He got this comment from the Rush Limbaugh radio show. Rush Limbaugh had a caller come on his show about 3 months ago who said Obama looks like Curious George. Rush broke out in a hard laughter and went to break. After the break he came on and aplogized claiming he didn’t know who curious george was and that he never heard of him. So the question was why did you laugh at something you don’t know anything about thats been around since 1951….don’t fall for this b.s….its Rush Limbaugh and his dimwit fanbase..

    7. TO PAULO

      May 13, 2008 @ 11:55 pm

Actually, a lot of people have said Bush looks like a monkey. Especially with political comics; I’ve seen numerous comics depicting Bush as a monkey, what with his big ears and all.

Still, it’s not the intention of the shirt that makes it offensive and inappropriate. Even if the creator thinks it’s not racist, the fact that most people in our society who see it as offensive and racist should mean that it’s inappropriate for the society (especially with the popular derogatory statement that black people look like monkeys).

Note that the word “society” should be used in the context of the people that the shirt in question affects.

Personally, I would say that yes, this shirt is racist. But only because the majority of the people who see this shirt would think so on their first impression.

I live in a 2.5 million dollar house in Marietta. Now why exactly do you feel sorry for my having to live there?

Your original post is about people generalizing other people. That’s what leads to racism and it’s wrong.

When you make Marietta seem like it’s nothing but backwoods hicks, you’re doing the SAME FUCKING THING AS THE PEOPLE WHO MADE THE SHIRT!

    10. William

      May 14, 2008 @ 12:25 am

It’s only racism in your mind.

This shirt is not racism. It’s a monkey.

What if you get into an obscure situation, like you honestly drop your lunch on a black man. Is that racism?

    11. wtf_america

      May 14, 2008 @ 12:32 am

I’ve never been to Marietta…but I’m pretty sure the value of your house has nothing to do with the attitudes of you or your neighbors. Sounds to me like defending Normans actions places you squarely in the column of “redneck with a check” is all. As far as generalizations…YOU CERTAINLY CAME TO A GENERALIZATION ABOUT YOUR DAMN NEIGHBORHOOD PRIOR TO MOVING THERE! I prefer to “form opinions”…and I think that if you don’t pressure Norman to remove the sale of that shirt, I’m of the opinion the citizens of Marietta pander to racists.

Please don’t take this to mean that all of Georgia is racist or the south in general is racist. These low lives that printed this stupid shirt don’t represent the south. It is like this that keep pushing the south back and this is why no one respects anyone from the south. Thank you so much, assholes.

African American’s need to concentrate less on what white people are saying about them and more about what other blacks are doing to them…..you want an equal society , thats fine with me , as soon as i get to watch a little of that new tv station i never hear about WET( WHITE ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION ) HA picture that with a polaroid , they would be shut down so fast and labeled as racist , funny how its ok for things like ” black entertainment” though right , talk about a double standard

How is that shirt racist? You know the people saying that’s racist are black. George Bush has been called a monkey many times, and that was never racist. Now, when you say Obama, who happens to have dark skin, looks like Curious George, then it’s racist apparently. Why? Looks like a double-standard to me. The only racist people left are black people, that’s all I ever hear. I’m sick of it. Black this, black that. I don’t have anything against blacks except they can’t seem to shut the f*** up about being black! Bush and Obama both look like f***ing monkeys. It’s not racist, it’s true! It’s hillarious! The shirt is cute and supports Obama. Get over it.

I just moved from Atlanta, Georgia. It is a boring place full of bigoted snobby rich white people in the Atlanta Suburbs (Marietta, Alpharetta, Roswell, Kennesaw). They’re the worst kind because a lot of them are bigoted and rich, which makes them way less humble than the average bigot in south. They ride around in their gas guzzling cars in their crowded roads and think it is the best place in the country because the cost of living is cheap. Too bad it is the most boring place ever, but that doesn’t matter because they are so isolated from the rest of the country/world that it seems like the only place in the world to them.

Oh yeah, Marietta sucks: I know because I have been there, and it’s full of snobby punks like this guy whose dad is probably a preacher, owns a dealership, or is the owner of some construction contracting company. They post on the internet from their fancy 2.5 million dollar house and act like the price of their house makes them not a boorish bigotted low-class person. I hate the south, and all the fake backwards people in it that think god gives a damn about their little inbred stupid asinine ideas.

I do think some people see racist imagery where it doesn’t exist.

But this is the real McCoy, even I can see that. Barack Obama looks nothing like Curious George - unless you’re a redneck who thinks blacks are monkeys. Then again this joint selling them looks like pure class - “border patrol eat free” = “we hate them dirty mexicans too”. It’s a shallow gene pool around those parts, I think.

So r u saying “black people” equals violence? Because I can recall seeing “white people” (or other race) as killers, thieves etc. So your statement is not only your experience but it also shows your IGNORANCE! And to question a TV station, get off YOUR ASS and start a “WET”…There are many TV stations (MTV to name one) that cater to different ethic backgrounds, so please do your f*cking research before you make yourself look like a “DONKEY” in front of the world. Racism is a situation of our environment and it is VERY real so the debate of who it offends should be the actual discussion. DAMN if this doesn’t offend you, ask yourself “Could this be offensive if the shoe was on the other foot?”

The statement ”I wish Hillary had married O.J.” is both racist and just straight up disrespectful. During the trial every white person, despite the evidence, wanted OJ to fry and on the other hand every black person wanted him free. And half of the white population dislikes Bill Clinton for getting head in the White House, so its really a catch 22.

Ok, this is just plain stupid.

The “I wish Hillary had married O.J.” is more of a sexist comment then it is a racist one…unless you really think OJ was innocent??

If it was a black person that created the shirt would you call it racist? probably not and that my friend is what makes a racist. White people do not have a monoploy on hate and I have to afree that the black community has become the bigger racists than the white community (of course since I am white you will call me a racist for pointing out the truth)

The only reason you are reacting to it this way is because a WHITE person made the shirt. It’s one thing to liken Obama to a monkey (and you have to admit it’s an obvious comparison, the same way George Bush looks like a monkey) and a hugely different thing to liken him to a tar-baby (which would actually BE racist).

Welcome to centre stage, get used to it, it’s not all sunshine and roses on the ‘white’ side of the fence and know that your on our side of the fence I think you will realize that very shortly.

Seriously you have a blackman who will most probably be in the white house shortly. Calling racism after that is a load of sh*t and you will know have to start taking responsiblity for your own actions and not just blaming ‘Whitie’ all the time.

I saw this on CNN yesterday in a bar. At the exact same time on another TV there was a Red Stripe commercial with a black man making fun of white people dancing. If a Curious George=Obama shirt is going to offend you, if you are that sensitive to racism, then the Red Stripe commercial should offend you too. Racism doesn’t work one way. It’s not a privilege of blacks to get to sit back and say “That’s racist!” at anything they don’t like while saying whatever they want about anyone else. Frankly I am not offended by either the t-shirt or the commercial, just the double standard.

racism is an excuse used by societal slackers to put a name on thier own personal shortcomings at pass it off as someone else’s fault…….by the way….for all you genius’s …..redneck , inbred these are all RACIST TERMS USED TO DEGREGATE WHITES…SO YOU ARE ALL NOTHING BUT HIPPOCRATES….OH WAIT , I CANT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE CAUSE IT MAKES ME A RACIST….do you see how stupid it is…if you want to take away peoples right to say what they want , than you cant say what you obviously “WANT” either…any rebuttals after this on the side of the antagonists will be purely futile and will proofs to be hypocritical falsehoods. and have any of you been to trinity’s web site….all the pro”black” langauge on thier site , visit the site and replace all the words that say black or african with white and tell me thats not a double standard ..obama went to that church for years upon years , and that is the church’s mision statement ….how could you possible say he doesnt hold those same black theology beliefs

I used to live in Marietta, and yes, they have a lot of rednecks their. I went to UGA and faced some of the same kind of bigoted, undercover racist people their too. I was at this party and I wondered upstairs and discovered some white kids playing with some cards with racists images on them. They where all shocked when I found them. I said, can I play. They all got quit and turned pale. You see people, don’t be afraid what the racist do, confront them with strength and show them, no matter how hard they try to denigrate a race of people, they can’t stop the us. I am a millionaire businessman living in fort lauderdale florida that happens to be black. But it never stopped me and neither will a bunch of hicks stop Barack! The future is for all of us, not just a select group. INTEGRATION, ASSIMILATION, EDUCATION, CLASS not RACE is the new dilemma.

You people are all way too sensitive for your own good. As a white guy living in a predominately black neighborhood, I hear racial slurs all the time… directed from blacks towards whites. [sarcasm] I’m sure they are justified though, as anyone with 1% black in them is above being either prejudgice or racist. [/sarcasm] Get over yourselves your f&cking hypocrites!

I really just want to know something not being mean or anything, but from one human being to another…no racism just honest dialogue….. Does it bother honest hard working educated blacks when they see how they are portrayed in the media as ghetto fabulous and eboniphied and also when you see blacks on the street acting like hood trash ,violent, loud and cause white people to be afraid and move to different neighborhoods, what does that do to you as a person . i am not trying to be racist , honestly , but i have never in my life seen human beings act how the blacks in my neighborhood are , ive lived in Spanish(Puerto Rican ) areas , white and now my neighborhood has turned to predominantly black , robberies are up 500% in 10 years , rapes , car thefts and shootings are rampant and were slim to none before….as a black person , you cant argue statistics , cause statistics are blind , they have no eyes to see color , they only tell a story , how does that make hard , good strong black people feel?
I also believe that “nigger” means ignorant loud obnoxious person no matter what color you are!!!

Oh, God, No! They’ve made fun of Obama!!!!! Calm down, you idiots. They made fun of Bush the same way. It seems your just concentrating on the color of skin. You see, when someone does something like this and you say its “racist!” than all your doing is pushing racism itself. If you really don’t want racism to exist, stop pushing it forward and forward by saying that if anyone says anything to any other color than White People it is racist. And plus, I mean, come on. I think we are over-loving Obama a little bit, don’t you? The guy could walk up on the stage and start pooping on the podium and everyone would be like, “That’s beautiful poo, Obama!!” and “I applaud him for having the courage to do that”. I don’t think Obama would make a bad president (because obviously Presidents don’t have much authority…They aren’t cutting down those gas prices) but I just think that he shouldn’t be so worshipped as he is being right now.

Basically what I am saying is, this is not at all racist..but I can see how people can take it that way. I am also saying that we need to calm down with Obama….if elected I know he won’t be the best president we have ever had.

Man, we could really use FDR right now……

To the person that says it’s only racist in your mind, that doesn’t make sense. Why would they use a picture of a monkey (which has been used as a derogatory image representing blacks originating from monkeys and apes?) So if I printed up a shirt with a photo of a saltine cracker on it and said John McCaine in 08, that wouldn’t be racist. People get over yourselves. Yes racism still exists. Unfortunately I live in Cobb County and this doesn’t surprise me at all.

Personally I don’t have a problem with any of your comments but I do feel if Norman is going to sell that Curious George T shirt then he should at least have a black T shirt with Ms. Clinton on it with a white sheet over her body with holes cut out for the eyes. If it’s all in the name of fun.

It takes all kinds and with that stated everybody has their own opinion about who, what, when and where.

      I will address this though.

Fof ALL THE WHITE People who feel that they are sick and tired of us talking about how one sided our country is then you are probably pretty immature.

Think about it like this. Imagine, your mother at one time or another being purchased and used to do the things that the buyer themselves would never do then used for a sex toy and possibly physically assaulted (beat) for moving too slowly or something stupid like that.
Imagine, your father going to the polls to be involved in the voting process and the local police releasing dogs and turning on pressurized water hoses on him to get him to go home.
Imagine, your little brother who graduated from UGA with honors sends a potential employer a copy of his resume. The employer then receives the resume along with another graduate from Howard U. The employer doesn’t even get past the line that has UGA typed on it. He tosses it in the trash because he knows that the UGA school is mostly one color and the Howard U school is mostly another color (student body count).
Let’s look at the situation in the current. You talk about BET, personally I’m not a fan of that network but you talk about BET as if it makes up all the 150 cable stations when I think there are only 2 or 3 stations that cater to people of color and that number would include the latin stations as well.
I think a lot of people react and respond from emotions and they don’t really think about what really is fact.
The fact is white people are still the majority. A lot of them from my experience approach life with a kind of priviledged mentality. Like it belongs to them. I don’t have a problem with that but I think just out of respect for your fellow man one should be more considerate of them.

Who ever made the comment about us black folk being hostile you probably are correct. After a few hundred years of being made to feel as though we are inferior then yes we will be hostile and for those who say we should just get over it, I think it’s going to take a minute. We do have some self repairing to do but I think we are making progress.

Racism is like a poison larva that keeps morphing into some ugly creature.

To sum it up one group of people shoudn’t ever have to fight for the right to do anything.
That statement alone say’s to me that there has been and still is a large race problem in this country.

Slavery civilized blacks, if you can call blacks civilized i.e. who is always the loud ignorant person on the bus or in the store or in the movies? I’ll agree the shirt is out of line. I’ll even agree that we can only expect more inappropriate cartoons and comments as Obama and other minority candidates make their way into the political spotlight in the name of comedy. I’m certain that both Obama and Clinton have made their peace with that, as evidenced by Obama’s staunch desire to suppress overt evidence of racism occurring against his campaign to promote the notion of a more uniformed America. I applaud the both of them for wanting to rise above the nonsense.

What really gets under my skin, what really boils my blood to the core is the many idiotic comments that have been left below this picture. It really disappoints me. I don’t deny that my race has a great deal of internal work to do. And, I am often disappointed with the images that the media projects of African Americans because they are very often unbalanced. But, we forget that every race has their flaws, we all come in a spectrum of colors and flavors, and that systemic and historical factors shape us all into who we are today.

Please don’t minimize the significance racism, sexism, and a number of other -isms have played into the history of our country, your judgments of others, and where we are headed in the future. I only hope that we can all learn to step outside our boxes, become more objective, and critical of “facts” before we go about expounding upon statistics, being overly judgmental of those unlike ourselves, and/or uneducated regarding -isms and affirmative action in general. As I attempt not to despise every person that has left an idiotic comment to this ignorance, I will certainly try to do the same.

free speech only goes so far unlike some other people think. just like the KKK can have a march and still get protected by police but as soon as that turns offensive and inflicts on other peoples rights the KKK’s rights as a group to march are gone just cause you have rights doesnt mean you can infringe on others

I thought, “According to history” we were all Monkeys and Apes in the begining. Though not proven as I hear, yet its just a word. Everybody picks on everybody. I think alot of folks in this world are looking for a reason to get a free ride, or feel sorry for me ticket. We are turning into a bunch of school yard kids. I really think there are bigger issues out there today. Lets figure out how we are all going to survive over the next ten years, as well as our children. Gas, food, jobs, war, they are all getting tough to buy, find, and win. I support the person who makes a difference, and is going to help our cause. Watch the news, and name call those people who are making us ALL look stupid and feel like we have no clue! Like it or not, we gotta live together in this small world. Lets hope we make together. “Peace”

I agree that you’re generalizing in the same manner by criticizing Marietta as a whole. I live in City of Marietta very close to this bar and I love the area because it is diverse both racially and economically. In my almost ten years in the Atlanta area, I’ve lived half time in the city (East Atlanta and Midtown) and half time in the northwest subburbs (Marietta, Woodstock, Canton). I’m not defending the abundance of pricks in Cobb County, but it’s kind of ridiculous to lump a whole county full of people under one umbrella. To say that there aren’t rednecks or racism 15 minutes away in Atlanta is hilarious, because I know for a fact that there is plenty of both. This whole region is teeming with racism and ignorance, not just Cobb County, not just Atlanta.

The ironic thing about the location of this bar is that it’s not in East Cobb or whatever hated part of Marietta you and others like to imagine, it’s in the heart of the Mexican and section 8 neighborhoods. The thing that REALLY pisses me off is that this guy has had racist shit about immigrants on his marquee for months and months and no one spoke up about it until now. It’s really sad that the Hispanic community here has to sit around and be publicly outed because some redneck who wouldn’t want their jobs anyway has something to say about it. The selective nature of the situation really is sadder than anything else.

      Anthony’s wife. Anthony’s wife. Anthony’s wife.

I am just reading your response to my comment. It really wasn’t intended for you to first of all remind me that WE ARE ALL descendent’s from some other place.

As far as living in a hut goes, that comment doesn’t bother me at all because before Europe was so called civilized it too was pretty primitive. If I recall my history correctly during the Midevil movement they were committing some uncivilized acts themselves. Burning people alive and throwing them in lakes and rivers with stones attached to their body’s to see if they were witche’s all in the name of civilized religion.
So don’t try and call me out for trying to bring some value to an already devalued situation that keeps getting worse because some of us are so selfish that we can’t put ourselves in some other persons position or at the very least incorporate some empathy in our lives.

Why do we have to play the point the finger game? Black people behaving badly but so do White people and Latin people and Asian people.

Anthony’s wife, please do not display anymore of your family’s ignorance by making stupid ass comments about people of color being uncivilized.
Being civilized is relative to life and if you can’t understand that statement then maybe you should have relations with someone other than your cousin.
