You may have heard by now that the courts awarded over $7.4 million to Marvin Gaye?s family for their claims Pharell and Robin Thicke stole ?Blurred Lines? from Marvin?s hit ?Got To Give It Up,? and their win is prompting other producers to speak up about their stolen works.
There’s no question that music from the past ‘inspires’ other songs, and Jermaine Dupri should know… being that the 42-year-old has co-written and/or co-produced No. 1 hits such as Carey’s “We Belong Together” and “Always Be My Baby,” Usher‘s “Burn” and Monica’s “The First Night.”
That being said, the legendary producer recently shared his take on the ‘Blurred Lines’ lawsuit and in doing so… managed to blast Ciara‘s ‘I Bet’ as a rip off of a song he co produced, Usher’s ‘You got it Bad’ !

Jermaine Dupri recently spoke with the Associated Press and?says he is “50/50” about the “Blurred Lines” case because he understands both sides.
Younger producers like myself and Pharrell, we make records that are influenced by other records that are out there. That?s how hip-hop has always been created ? it has some kind of element of something (from) the past. Or sometimes we just take the entire sample and we give the artist the credit for that sample.?
He then goes on to say, ?We?ve all been in a position where it could go like this or we can give the producer the credit.
But wait… Dupri also reveals he’s in a similar situation and that when he and his fellow producers heard Ciara’s latest single, it was way too?similar to one of his classic Usher hits. ?Jermaine doesn’t hold his tongue about it, either. Calling Ciara’s tune a complete ‘rip-off’ of Usher’s ‘U Got It Bad!’
“Ciara’s new single is a complete rip-off of Usher’s ‘U Got It Bad,'” Dupri said.
“I’m clear on what I made and I’m clear on how music influences people and I’m clear on chord changes and how people move things. … It might not be as evident as the ‘Blurred Lines’ situation, but I believe the same thing happened to me.”
Dupri said he, Usher and producer Bryan-Michael Cox all noticed the similarities immediately. And he said “I Bet” also sounds like R&B singer Tamia’s “Still,” another song he produced.
Hmmmm…. do we smell a new lawsuit heating up?? 😯
Dupri said he plans to contact Ciara and the producers of “I Bet,” to ask that he, Cox and Usher be properly credited.
Ciara’s camp has yet to respond.
What do you think of this sticky situation? Does Jermaine have a case?
