Nene Leakes of The Real Housewives of Atlanta spoke at Chicago?s Ultimate Women?s Expo last month and she used the opportunity to speak out against abusive relationships and domestic violence.

In the wake of the Ray Rice scandal and other similar instances which have garnered national media attention, Nene shared intimate details about her own experiences, speaking candidly about an abusive relationship she was once involved in.

He hit me. He sexually abused me. We physically fought.

Leakes goes on to explain how her strength comes from the fact that she’s experienced such a harsh past.

I can stand in a test, in a fight, in a war, and just be standing here and don?t even move because I?ve been through so many things.

Sometimes as women we allow so many people to change who we are inside. I?m trying to learn to soften myself a little bit? but I?m still not going to be sugarcoating nothing.
