R.I.P. Lena Horne [PHOTOS + VIDEO]

Legendary jazz singer/actress Lena Horne died Sunday evening at the age of 92.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, June 30, 1917, Lena Mary Calhoun Horne, was the great-granddaughter of a freed slave. She was raised in a leading family in the black bourgeoisie.

Her daughter, Gail Lumet Buckley, wrote in her 1986 book “The Hornes: An American Family” that among their relatives was a college girlfriend of W.E.B. Du Bois and a black adviser to Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Dropping out of school at 16 to support her ailing mother, Horne joined the chorus line at the Cotton Club, the fabled Harlem night spot where the entertainers were black and the clientele white.

Soon, a movie offer from MGM came after she headlined a show at the Little Troc nightclub with the Katherine Dunham dancers in 1942. Continue Reading…

Derek Blanks Shoots Tasha Smith… [PHOTOS + VIDEO]

Actress Tasha Smith is the next celeb to be featured in celebrity photographer Derek Blank’s alter ego series.

Tasha, who’s known for her larger than life personality, uses the movie poster for the 1958 sci-fi film, “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman” for the concept with the background being the City of Atlanta.

…and in classic D. Blanks fashion, Tasha plays every role in the shoot!

Ms. Smith also covers the June 2010 issue of Sister2Sister magazine, which was also shot by Derek.

Three well known porn stars were spotted partying it up in the “A” recently. You flick-heads may recognize them from the Booty Talk series but I, personally have never had the honor of viewing such films. [insert side-eye here]

Adult entertainers Mr.Marcus, Mandingo, and India took a break from bumpin skins & exchanging fluids to party the night away at Vice with a few local celebrities, like Dallas Austin, Jazzy Pha & Shannell (of Young Money).

Lil Wayne is in a reflective mood this week as he blogs from his cell about mother’s day.

In his new blog entry entitled “A Mother’s Worth,” Weezy thanks all the baby moms mothers who have been so supportive in his life:

It?s not many words in the world more powerful than ?mother.? Those six letters can bring joy, just like they bring pain. It can invoke excitement just as quickly as it can anger, depending on the context, I guess.

For myself, it means more than I can ever possibly describe, but I will try. I associate the term with immeasurable strength, beautiful patience and infinite wisdom.

Singer Toni Braxton and her 7 year old son, Diezel Lewis filmed the ?We Volunteers? Public Service Announcement at the American Movie Company yesterday.

?WE Volunteer is [a] three-year campaign (2009-2011) dedicated to empowering women and the people in their lives to volunteer for a one day (24 hours) to causes and organizations that they are passionate about. The campaign makes it simple and easy for you to learn how to volunteer in your community by quickly connecting to local organizations that you feel passionate about.” (Source)

The organization that Toni is most passionate about is Autism Speaks. Toni became their spokesperson after dealing with issues surrounding raising Diezel, her autistic son.
