Mo’Nique won Best Supporting Actress last year for her role in “Precious” and it’s customary for the previous year’s Oscar winners to present the awards to the current year’s Oscar winners in each category.
All of last year’s winners were in attendance… except Mo’Nique.
So the big question is… why did Monique skip the show?
Mo’Nique participated in announcing the nominations back in January and my sources say she was struck by the lack of diversity among the list of actors.
I’ve heard rumors that she boycotted the show was because there were no Black nominees but her official answer is that she had to work.
Or in other words, she wasn’t paid to be there…
Monique explained to Barbara Walters during her post-Oscar interview, that she refused to do promotional appearances for the film “Precious” because she had more important things to do…. like spend time with her family and her new twins.
It was soon revealed that the truth of the matter was that she wanted to be paid for her appearances and the film’s budget didn’t allow for promotional appearance payments.
The Academy Awards don’t pay either. Most actors think of it as an honor just to be on that stage but not Mo’Nique.? BET was calling!
I guess you can put two and two together and come up with….. No Mo’Nique!
So when asked why she skipped presenting the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress this year her dutiful husband/manager, Sidney Hicks told USA Today Monique was busy taping episodes of her talk show and that announcing the nominations earlier this year had been her way of participating in the ceremony.
It appears that Mo’Nique may be burning all her Hollywood bridges. I guess we won’t be seeing her in any major motion pictures anytime soon.
