Chris Rock Faces Lawsuit Over “Good Hair” Documentary
Chris Rock has just been hit with a $5 Million dollar lawsuit over his upcoming Good Hair documentary. According to TMZ, Regina Kimbell is accusing Rock of stealing his idea from her 2005 documentary, “My Nappy Roots” and says that she showed him her film back in 2007 on the set of his TV series, “Everybody Hates Chris”. She has since filed suit in U.S. District Court in downtown L.A., and seeks no less than $5 million dollars!
Kimbell’s documentary features celebs who discuss styles like the conk, the Afro, the Jheri curl and dreadlocks while Rock’s film also uses celebs to look at the efforts black women use to get that European look. Check out a snippet from Kimbell’s “My Nappy Hair” below and judge for yourself:
My Nappy Roots
You know we Black women don’t play about our weaves or our dollars. Steal from us and it’s going DOWN! I dunno if this is merely a coincidence, but if Chris actually stole this idea he’s gonna have to cut a check quick. “Good Hair” is scheduled for release on Friday, October 9th and has created quite a nationwide buzz in screenings. October 6, 2009 @ 7:41 amI don’t think one has to do with the other. Her doc. was about our roots and backgrounds, also the different looks of black hair. Nappy, dreads, braids, and so on it has the natural beauty of African Americans. Chris on the other hand put it out there, and put people on blast about weaves and not wanting to be natural. There are so many things in this world that are similar. You can’t assume that one has to do with the other. He is who he is “funny as hell” at times and she was more on the serious side with her work. She may have gave him a thought and he put his own touch to it he kept it “real”. I don’t think that she deserves anything, because I could do the same thing and talk in general about micros is she gone ask me to cut a check? L’ naw because I’m not giving it a voice like Chris Rock…she better watch Karma she is a bish, she could have got something working with the man instead of getting nothing being greedy.

October 6, 2009 @ 10:38 amI guess I have a problem with celebs/pseudo-celebs “borrowing” other peoples ideas and using them as their own. I do think that Rock’s documentary is going to get more publicity b/c he’s a celebrity and do better. She should probably just cut a deal with him and keep it moving.

October 6, 2009 @ 12:31 pmChris Rocks is more about Weave…and modern society’s view on hair as a culture…there are some similarities, but I think that his has a different tone…But, she did show him the footage, and you can tell that it was a while ago-Vivica even has her old face in those clips-So I guess it’s a matter of Judge and Jury.

October 6, 2009 @ 9:18 pmI personally think it is two different stories. There can different versions of the same idea… She is coming from the perspective of being called Nappy head and the message it sends. He is coming from the perspective of us not admitting that we would rather have long flowing hair and exposing how much we spend to keep our hair long and luxurious. I tell ya.
