Bill Cosby appeared on Meet the Press Sunday morning where he discussed his decision to vote for President-elect Barack Obama. During his appearance, he reveals how historical the mere act of VOTING for a Black man was, as well as Obama’s historic victory. He also reflected on the importance of serving others and how this presidency is paramount to affecting change in all Americans:
?One of the things I?ve heard, is that when a person gives, when a person does a service, that?s there?s something happens to them emotionally. I?ve heard people working with prisoners, talk about prisoners breaking down and crying because they taught another prisoner, they mentored another prisoner, to learn how to read. And the mentoring person started to cry. You can?t, as a policeman said to me, make a man cry by punching him in the face. They don?t cry. But here this man is and it?s something emotional about us giving to each other, teaching each other, and that?s what this family?s talking about.?
A peaceful demonstration turned into a riot Wednesday night in Oakland, California. Protestors, angry about the shooting, smashed businesses and set fires in downtown Oakland, and confronted Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums on the steps of city hall…all while yelling “No Justice No Peace.”
I posted earlier this week about the BART police officer who fatally shot an unarmed man on the subway January 1, 2009.? Well, Oscar Grant, III has now been laid to rest and many are in fear of police retaliation based on the video of the murder coming out. The BART Transit Police officer who shot the the young man, Johannes Mehserle, 27, has quit the force this amidst community outrage and has also received death threats.? He has also refused questioning by the police internal review board investigating his shooting of 22-year-old Oscar Grant but police officials claim that the officer meant to use his taser and NOT his gun…(yeah right!)
At least 105 people were arrested for a variety of offenses Wednesday night. Police said charges for those arrested included assault on a police officer, looting, vandalism and arson. Some of those detained were found to have drugs, which added another count to the charges.
Angry about the New Year’s Day shooting by a BART police officer, protesters smashed businesses and set fires in downtown Oakland, and confronted Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums on the steps of city hall.
Oakland police beefed up their prescence on the streets Thursday morning, with officers in riot gear patrolling the streets as they anticipated more protests. Businesses downtown were cleaning up, dealing with the aftermath of smashed windows and cars.
Beyonce hit up the New York premier of “Notorious” yesterday glowing from head to toe.? Mrs. Carter, fresh off the heels of a romantic getaway with her boo, Jay-Z, looked fresh and relaxed.? I was tryna see if she’s still rocking her “Obama for yo Mama” nails but I couldn’t tell… 😆
In related news, Bey was just nominated for five NAACP awards, including best female recording artist, best video for both “If I Were a Boy” and “Single Ladies” and best supporting actress for Cadillac Records.? Do you really expect anything less from this superstar?
President-elect Barack Obama met with the four living members of the U.S. presidents’ club yesterday (George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter). The image above will forever be hailed in history books as every living U.S. president came together at the White House for a “power lunch” to hash over the world’s challenges with the president-elect. This is the first meeting of its kind since the days of President Ronald Regan.? Check out the AP news coverage below:
“This is an extraordinary gathering,” Obama said, looking plenty at ease in the humbling office that will soon be his.
“All the gentlemen here understand both the pressures and possibilities of this office,” Obama said. “And for me to have the opportunity to get advice, good counsel and fellowship with these individuals is extraordinary. And I’m very grateful to all of them.” (Source)
On New Year’s Day, Oscar Grant, III (above) was fatally shot in the back by a subway police officer. The event occurred on California’s Bay Area Rapid Transit system (BART) and was thankfully captured on film by several onlookers within the station. Video footage clearly shows that the unarmed Grant was cooperating with authorities, who had also detained several other young men.? I posted the original video footage to show the inhumanity of the shooting.? It is very disturbing to watch so please view at your own risk: Continue Reading…
