Remember Lil Man-Man who wore his Daddy’s Freaknik shirt to school, well the AJC?featured Freaknik today in it’s “Whatever Happened To“ column and I just had to revisit the topic.? Freaknik disappeared because it was no longer?the college picnic that it started as.? I know I’m old….but I remember Freaknik as a joyous gathering of classmates who couldn’t (or didn’t want to) go home for spring break.? Everyone just chilled and brought a bottle.
Each year it got bigger and bigger as more out of town students joined in.? The “outsiders” turned the hometown event into a car show which eventually morphed into some kind of crazy “Freakfest” where there were strippers in vans and ghetto hoochies in Toyota’s all taking it off for whoever asked.
If you don’t remember, I have video taped proof of the nonsense…
These videos were taken in 1996/97, which was when the real “Freaks” came out. If you are a hometown ATLien, I’m sure you remember the drama of the traffic plans, the cries of racial discrimination and the hundrends thousands of Freaknikkers that descinded on the “A” each year from 1983 – 1999.? I had my fun during many a Freaknik but am more than glad that the celebration moved on.? The videos really put the event in perspective. These were fun times but it was crazy as hell!! Talk about living in the moment…
