Molly Ringwald was one of the original cast members of the show, but was written out during the 2nd season because there were too many characters.
Producers felt that there were too many characters given the limitations of the half-hour sitcom format, and reducing the cast members gave them an opportunity to focus on plotlines and give the remaining girls more room for character development. Ringwald did, however, continue to make periodic guest appearances throughout the remaining seasons.
