  • Gabby Douglas Does NOT Care What You Think… [PHOTOS]

    Aug, 6 2012 | Written by ATLien

For some odd reason, Gabrielle Douglas‘ hair has been the topic of discussion every since she was dubbed “the Black girl” during the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

While personally, I don’t think Gabby’s hair was any different than any of her other (White) teammates, she was highly criticized for it. As if her hair really mattered more than her athletic ability.

Douglas found the media focus on her hair absurd.

Here’s what Douglas, the first U.S. gymnast to win gold in team and all-around competition, has to say about all the hair talk…

I don’t know where this is coming from. What’s wrong with my hair?

I’m like, `I just made history and people are focused on my hair?’ It can be bald or short, it doesn’t matter about (my) hair.

And Gabby didn’t change a thing.

Clearly… Gabby doesn’t care what y’all think about her hair.

“Nothing is going to change,” she said.

“I’m going to wear my hair like this during beam and bar finals. You might as well just stop talking about it.” (source)

    POW! That that…. critics!

What is the big deal about Gabby Douglas’ hair anyway?

This girl has made HISTORY, accomplished what so many black white and in between could dream of and instead of focusing on the positive..we want to tear her down.. I expect this from ignorant racists..but it was her OWN who got the ball rolling..that in itself is sad..last time I checked your hair does NOT make you who you are..babygirl had pure talent it’s a shame at 16 she has more sense than some of the adults who criticized her

I ve been sick of us black people with the hair. they spend too much money and time on their hair thats why we have no time and money to persue real dreams. They bug me all the time cause i am busy working out and my hair does its own thing. One woman told me I should spend plan to spend at least 5-6 hours each week to get my hair and nails done. then i should sleep on my face with a head-tie one every night. i cant do that, foreplay has to have free hair and i am not giving up sex for a Hair do– I would go for the fireworks and the goal any day. Gabby is gonna have so much fun in her life–since she understands where the goal lies

So glad you touched this subject. What is sad is most of the people talking about her hair were black women! Them folks should be ashamed of themselves. She is a CHILD! As a black women that works out regularly everyone knows relaxer or no relaxer when you sweat your hair is not going to look like you are ready for a Vogue photo shoot. That was so not what was important. What was important was her awesome personality and ability.

She’s flipping and cartwheeling all over that auditorium and her hair is supposed to be whipped? Her hair needs to be pulled back so she can see that balance beam and not fall off of it and crack her head open. Maybe she should curl the ponytail. That would look cute. Either way, who cares.

So sad that this has to be a topic but I am soooooooooooo not surprised…the hatred that some people have for their own race is mind blowing. The sad part is had it not been her hair it would be something else. I pray that this will encourage her to reach out to our youth and be an advocate for self love AND winning while doing it. Her hair is perfectly fine and I am so proud of her for not letting it get it her. GO GABBY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly. Agreeing with everyone. I don’t know how this story even grew legs, but it’s saddening that this girl’s hair was criticized because people felt like she should’ve "gotten it done." And what do they mean by that? Is it about the thickness, or the fact that she didn’t get weave?
Domonique Dawes commented on this topic during an interview, and she had a valid point; many black women would rather be out of shape than risk sweating out their hair. My hair became it’s healthiest when I went natural, but to each their own. Gabby is beautiful, regardless of hair texture.

The first to make a comment about Gabby’s hair was a white chick on Twitter named Sarah…a few comments were also made on black gossip blogs because you know black women do struggle and talk about our own hair. Then main stream media who wanted to know what black america was saying about Gabby’s historic performance redistributed what was being gossiped about on a black blog as if black people, specifically black women were dogging Gabby about her hair instead of just seeing it as idle gossip. The story grew legs and was overblown and became a whole other story. Which took to focal point off of Gabby’s performance and had people like Dominique Dawes being interviewed talking about black women’s hair instead of gymnastics. Not one interview with Dominique to speak specifically about black gymnast but only to discuss the black hair topic. Main stream media never redistributes the idle gossip on black blogs but in this case they wanted a negative story in the same way that the stupid reporter asked Gabby about her mother’s bankruptcy. This is how this story grew legs. Black women will never stop talking about our hair it is part of our culture. Since when does main stream media care anything about our culture? When it makes a good negative story.

Black children are encouraged to strive for better and greater things just like any other race of children. You just let social media further pimped you into saying some more ignorant things concerning black parents and children. The media will make you think that people like Gabby are the exception but we know that is not the case…millions of black girls rock everyday…but this does not take away from Gabby’s historic accomplishment.

I am so proud of this young lady, it always amazes me how Black people are the first to tear each other down. I found this out the hard way, being a black woman raised in an all white town was not easy. However, once I went to a predominately black college, that’s where I experienced the worst kind of racism, from my own race, and it hurt a lot and took me awhile before I could get through it. I applaud her. I really hope someday we can stop the crap.

My best friend went thru the same thing. Grew up in KS with mostly white people. Decided to go to a black college and experienced culture shock from her own kind. The remnants of slavery is the root, unfortunately, coupled with the negative influences of today’s culture.

I understand where your coming from, but come on be realistic you can’t just say it’s only black people when you haven’t met all the white people in the world to know if they’d do the same thing. Its sick how you people always make black people sound like animals and aliens to this world. Like we’re the only race who does violence and such. It seems like you guys have forgotten about Asians and Spanish, but who cares cause black people are the criminals. SMH don’t "don’t judge the community cause the theft stole your bread"

See I think you are miss informed. It’s not only black people, with Honey Boo Boo out there and all that other crap, you can see it’s other races too, however, since I am black, I would prefer to focus on getting MY community up and running properly before I start worrying about other communities that are already taking care of each other.
Instead of attacking and saying oh it’s not all black people, you might want to understand that while it’s not all black people, the ones that are the problem, are the ones that are causing the most damage, mainly because people want to give them passes and excuses.

It was the fault of your parents not to involve you in black culture. By the time we are 3 years old most of us find out the hard way that we are going to have issues with our hair…after sitting between our mothers knees….we embrace it, complain about it, and joke about not only our own hair but the struggles and triumphants that other black girls are having as well. This is part of our culture. We do talk about our hair….this in no way takes away from Gabby’s gold medals or her accomplishments…at the end of the day we are proud she made history.

I proudly wear a weave on occasion just as Paris Hilton does and I do not particularly care that you know it is fake and i also pay my power bill on time and I don’t have any children but if I did I would think my six figures would keep us out of the food and clothes line. poverty stricken welfare recipients can’t give a personal opinion or critique on the Internet? Only upper,, middle class or working class people can give a personal opinion or critique on a blog or chat. Is that right? Are you the personal opinion police? And why are you so personally offended by what is said about a black girls hair that you would play the "welfare queen" card?

I rather just congratulate her on her accomplishments.Even if the 90 mil was yen it still converts to over $100,000 which is more than some make in a year. Hope much did your spitefulness make you?

Oh so she did not win gold? Yet when Our national anthem was being played, it was little Gabby standing there with the gold and not Russia’s Mustafina who is nothing more than a pouting, disrespectful brat. She gets no applause from me because she does not behave like a champion. China should have gotten the gold on uneven bars not the diva acting Mustafina.

She is sweating on uneven bars, a vault and balance beam, not working a catwalk. Who cares what her hair looks like. Do people ever realize what a phenomenal achievement winning all round gymnast at the Olympics is?

The only people keeping up the hair talk ate black blogs like one. It was a few people on twitter almost a week ago. Black blogs are the one who publishing articles…trying to capitalize on her name like e Rey one else. If you really wanted people to stop talking about her hair then stop talking about her hair

I can imagine the types of people who are criticizing this amazing young lady.

They are the types of people who would’ve never encouraged her at an early age to pursue her dreams. They are the types of people who would have teased Gabby for excelling in academics or sports other than track or basketball.

Most tellingly, they are the types of people who look at their surroundings day in and day out and silently wonder why they are surrounded by failure.

Wow. That’s some truth right there. Wonder why they’re surrounded by it but do nothing to escape the environment.

The Internet and it”s blogs is a forum where everyone can post their opinions even idiots who are criticizing Gabby’s hair in the midst of her amazing performance. Gabby’s hair was jacked up but understandably so. As black women, we do have issues with our hair, but it’s OUR issue. And we can speak about it if we like because it is part of OUR culture to do so. So for a troll like yourself to crawl up in here and try to imagine that those who are speaking about another black girls hair in a way that we do everyday concerning our daughters, nieces, mothers, aunts, and grandmothers somehow equates to us all living in poverty just shows the limits of your own imagination and the systematic indoctrination of your racist ideology. On another mostly white forum they were speaking about the girls makeup. Go there please with your over active imagination

Wat does it matter about her looks she’s a gymnast, still young and coming into her own. Shes also doing a lot more than most of the females at and around her age that do nothing but doll themselves up to be physically something their not just to get the approval of some 30something wrinkled face doucehbags tryna tell people what ”beautiful” and ”appropriate.” There’s nothing wrong with her hair but as usual theres something wrong with our society.

Gabby is a GREAT athelete. she should not change for no one *BUT* while in the public eye which is being watched closely ..people obviously did notice her hair texture NOT matching the added piece of ponytail. Her Mom’s hair is decent as well as her sister’s as seen in interviews. Her look will be a future investment along with her athletics. I just hope it does not interfere with future endorsements and her financial future. We all have learned in life that appearance DOES play a factor in things….IJS!!
