Mary J. Blige’s One on One w/ Cathy Hughes (Sneak Peek)

The queen of hip-hop/R&B, Mary J. Blige will be featured on tonight’s (June 14th) episode of TVOne’s One on One with Cathy Hughes. The songstress touched on several topics ranging from to her battles with drugs and alcohol to her relationship with her hubby Kendu Issacs. In a revealing clip, Mary discusses how she’s still struggling with accepting a drama-free relationship and how her faith is guiding her path:
At the beginning it was even hard, and even now it’s still hard because I never had anyone to be this firm and not “yes ma’am’ me to death…. And I never had anyone that I could believe cared for me that much so it’s difficult for me to see that he really has my best interest at heart sometimes. Because I’m living in the past of people not having my best interest at heart and so it’s like ’this is really to good to be true’ but then again..thats where God comes in and I’m like ‘Lord, what do I do?’ and he said ’Trust in me and don’t lean on your own understanding.’
So I’m trying to walk in that ….and I’m learning so much. I’ve come a long way…but I still have so much work to do.
Mary also chats about why she’ll never endorse a certain product and the fans who condemn her for being happy. More sneak peeks from the interview below:
Mary J. Blige on why she doesn’t “do” alcohol:
“I can’t do it…I can’t endorse alcohol. It’s something that has taken a toll on so many families. I celebrate occasionally but I can’t endorse that product. I can’t do it because there’s so many so many of us dying from it… spiritually dying.
To each his own. I just can’t. They’ll find somebody else. It’s just hard when you watch a whole family suffer from abusing it. It’s one thing to do it but to ABUSE it is just…deadly.”
Mary J. Blige discusses her “true” fans:
I’ve learned something so valuable. I used to take everyone’s issues and problems and fears and put them on my back and you’d see it all over my face. God gave me something. He said ‘you are not THAT you are THIS…you are a child of God…you are what I say you are’ and I had to believe him. Cause when you’re the victim all the time, you just feel like there’s this big truck of stuff on your back and I’ve gotta lift my head sometime and lift my heart and my spirit. And although I may feel like this I have to pull myself up.
A lot of my fans have moved out and said we can’t mess with her no more and that’s fine but then there’s alot of new people that moved in and said we’re messing with her cause she’s walking the walk that we’ve all are walking and she’s trying to do something different. Meaning she’s trying to make the transition from negative to positive, which is hard for people like me…
The show airs TONIGHT on (June 14th) on TV1 at 9pm (EST). Blige fans make sure you set your TiVo’s for this one!

June 14, 2009 @ 4:52 pmI feel you Sam…but what you see as BS other’s feel is innovative. Mary’s just choosing to work with the trends right now. I’m not saying it’s right, but it is what it is.
And I have to disagree with you on the music of the past. It was SAD “A”zz hell. She was always singing bout her man cheating or dealing with being the other woman or crying all day and all night. Come on now. Be for real. Just because she’s working with Lil Wayne and nem doesn’t negate the fact that she is still an icon. I’m just happy she’s still in demand cause I love her screaming “A”zzzzz

June 15, 2009 @ 10:42 amI’ve always likeed that Mary was honest. She didn’t sugar coat ish…I think their are women (people) who benefit from her honesty.
As far as folk not happy that she’s happy – I mean do you really want her to ascribe to the Em school of making music: let me make myself a miserable as possible so I can have a hit cd.

June 17, 2009 @ 1:11 pmHello every-body.
Sam, the essence of R&B escaped us in the late 70’s early to mid 80’s. Mary has been a good representation of what the generation that was born in the 90’s and afterwards missed. I think she is a great entertainer for her time and will go down in the history of all genre’s of music as an icon.
Her growth has been anything short of amazing, TO ME. In the early days I must admit I was not a fan I grew to appreciate her as I’m sure a lot of folks did. As a matter of fact Mary is the closest thing to the soul singers of my young life. Phyllis Hyman, Whitney Houston, Natlie Cole, Mikki Howard, Denise Williams, The Jones Girls, Sister Sledge, The Pointer Sisters, The Emotions, Minni Ripilton, Regina Belle, Anita Baker, Melba Moore and I know you guys have been watching Unsung on TV-1.
We really should give credit where credit IS due.
As far as lil Wayne goes, dude, I didn’t care for him either until I really listened to Carter III. I had to go out and buy that CD. I am a sucker for street poetry especially when they touch me with their lyrics. I don’t like any of the local repetitive **** that some of y’all like. The same beat that all the guys use to put two mindless words to. Maybe the same beat is good to dance to for you young folk but I think it stinks and what’s worse is that y’all really be groovin to that ****.
I want to touch on I-Tunes, is that what they are calling it now and days? I think I heard Jay-Z make some kind of negative comment about it in a new song he’s releasing. I know I heard Frank Ski from V-103 say something negative about it and he know betta. Zapp and Roger who really used that tool a lot back in the 80’s sort of coined that sound. It is very indicative of the 80’s pop culture and that is whats happening right now, right? I was a teenager in the 80’s and synthesized music is what we called it was really hot, as a matter of fact, Miles Davis used some of that sound on his last works.
It’s the trend.
