In all fairness I don’t think it’s a hip hop thing. I think it’s a keeping our label “special” thing. Labels trademark and pay a lot of money to keep their presence in a certain way. LV didn’t just say no to T.I. they said no to Brittany and many others. Their image is upscale, exclusivity. That’s why people buy them and pay the money they ask so that they can say they have a LV or Polo.

Trademark and imaging is how these companies make their money. The more exclusive and elusive, the more the people want it. The more the people want it the more money the companies get to make.

I actually prefer these companies to those who just pimp hip hop to make money. They really don’t care about “hip hop” or the people who listen or buy it (old or new school) but they use “hip hop” to sell their products. THOSE are the ones who I avoid, not the ones who are honest and say “we were exclusive BEFORE you met us and we will remain exclusive AFTER you met us.”

I just like folks who keep it real, and let’s face it ain’t that what hip hop is all about. Keeping it real and being true to your self, even if that means you’re an exclusive clothing and handbag manufacturer who’s trying to remain that way.
