R.I.P. ~ Shakir Stewart
Shakir Stewart, Executive Vice President of Def Jam Records died of an apparent suicide today. Details are sketchy, but WVEE DJ Greg Street, is currently dedicating his evening show to the fallen exec. Stewart, a graduate of Morehouse College, has been the go-to-guy for finding talent since his days at LaFace Records from 2000 to 2004, when he brought R&B siren Ciara to the company. He also played an integral role in bringing Beyonce to the firm.
He was last heard from around 2:00pm today. All of Atlanta is shocked by the news and my sincere condolences go out to the Stewart family.
Updated 1:00am ~ Def Jam Statement:
“LA Reid and all of us at Island Def Jam Music Group are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend and colleague Shakir Stewart,” Def Jam said in a statement released to VIBE today. “Shakir was an amazing man, in every sense of the word. A truly incredible friend and father who was an inspiration to not only our artists and employees, but to his family and the many people who had the privilege of counting him as a friend. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family at this very difficult time.” Via Vibe.com

November 1, 2008 @ 9:30 pmOMG!! I’m still in shock. What a tremendous loss – not just to the entertainment industry but more importantly to all the family and countless friends he left behind. I’ve known Shakir since about 6th grade and I have always considered Shake to be a great person. Undoubtedly this news has especially rocked the Oakland & Atlanta area that has been home to him for many years. My deepest condolences to the Stewart family! WE LOVE U SHAKE…RIP!

November 2, 2008 @ 3:41 amI couldn’t believe this when I heard it on the radio tonight. It is so sad and my prayers go out to his family. I was hoping to see him last week at the homecoming but never did. He was a great person and his death has touched a great many people. Rest in peace Shake. You are already missed.

November 2, 2008 @ 7:14 amMy prayers go out to the Stewart family, sometimes other family members do not know when their loved ones are depressed or have mood disorders, especially those that are go getters and high achievers who seem like they have it all and seem happy. My 19 year old nephew committed suicide in 2006 and we did not know he was depressed, he acted like his normal self days before it happened. May God’s love and comfort be around the Stewart family, his wife, children and love ones. Be strong and encouraged in the Lord, he will sustain you!!!
