It has always been my belief that Black history should be taught 365 days a year just like “White” history, but since we’ve been dedicated the Month of February, we may as well make good use of it.
A letter from a freed former slave to his onetime master has recently gone viral.
The letter was written in response to an August of 1865 letter from Colonel P.H. Anderson of Big Spring, Tennessee, who wrote to his former slave Jourdan Anderson, requesting that Jourdon return to work on his farm.
After being emancipated, Jourdon had moved to Ohio, found paid work, and was now supporting his family. He responded spectacularly by way of the letter seen below, which was reprinted in the New York Daily Tribune weeks after it’s mailing.
It is quite clear in the letter, that the now free “Slave” felt some kinda way about his former Master’s request. The letter is a MUST read, especially in light of OUR history month so please take a moment to honor Jourdon by reading it in it’s entirety. Continue Reading…
