Freaknik 2010 has come and gone with about as much hoopla that can be drummed up by our mass media. The over hyped event drew crowds of teeny-boppers hoping to relive the folklore of “Freaknik” past, however the City of Atlanta wasn’t having it!
Previous Freakniks have always had their own theme song, and Lil Duval nominated the perfect song for “Freaknik 2010”:
Even Keri Hilson commented on the FreakNOT:
I hate to say I told you so but…

There were several other local events going on this weekend: Braves/Hawks games, Dogwood Festival, Sweetwater 420 Festival, but the City of Atlanta police department was out in full force determined to make a statement that “Freaknik” was NOT welcome in the A.
According to the AJC, about 300 partygoers congregated on Peachtree Street near Underground at 10:30 p.m. The crowd was a diverse group, including teenagers in five-inch high heels and super-skimpy mini-skirts and senior citizens.
At about 11:15, police had seen enough and roughly 50 SWAT and Red Dog unit officers with flashlights began combing through Underground and ordered people to disperse.
As a helicopter circled overhead, 20 more officers lined Peachtree Street and shouted to the crowd that “it is over, let?s go.?
It’s really a shame that Atlanta couldn’t embrace the event, but considering the negativity that eventually surrounded it, you can’t possibly be surprised. Rapes, Fights, Robberies, Prostitution. I mean really… c’mon son.
What sane person would want to re-visit all that?
Freaknik started out as a great college event but ended because grown “A”zz men and woman (i.e. pimps & prostitutes) took the term “Freak” literally and it became almost a street orgy. Not a good look for our city and our local HBCUs…. at all.
So sadly, it had to end.
I’m just amazed that promoters won’t let Freaknik (or Freaknic) rest in peace. There’s nothing wrong with having a Black college reunion, but make up your own name for it.
It’s over. Let it die and come back with something a bit more original than a bunch of drunk and naked teenagers strutting down the street.
Now before I get called the anti-Christ for my views on the subject, I implore you guys to consider a few things.
First, there’s nothing wrong with partying and clubbing. I do it almost on the regular with no problems or issues. But when you combine underage drinking with old lecherous men seeking dumb young half dressed “freaks,” it’s nothing but a recipe for trouble.
I’ve read that Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed says he felt things ran smoothly but he made it crystal clear that he does not want “Freaknik” to return to Atlanta next year.
So with all that being said… did you manage to get your “Freak” on this weekend?
