I received the following email from Shiobhan Rogers, the 1st runner-up in the contest for the hair makeover from Celebrity Hairstylist Derek J.
Hello Michelle,
Let me first start off by saying thank you to you for making this possible. I just thought not only would I attach a pic but my thoughts on this experience.
Derek J was amazing. Not just in his styling techniques and listening to what I wanted, but in how he conduct his self as a stylist, professional, and business owner. The way he interacts with his clients and staff is amazing.
He has to be one of the most humble celebrity stylist I have ever had the pleasure to meet. I felt as though I was getting first class treatment not only to mention I got to see a few celebrities that I admire. The moment I got out the chair I felt beautiful. He transformed me into the women I knew was in me, all with styling my NATURAL hair.
I am looking forward to going back and letting him tame this hair. Again, thank you for this wonderful opportunity it has truly given me the boost I was looking for.
Bonus: running into you:-)
S. Rogers
Special thanks to Derek J and the staff of The J-Spot Salon for accommodating my contest winners!
Just FYI – For those of you who won the consolation prize, if you haven’t sent your mailing address please send ASAP. They all will be going out on the 18th, and if your address is not received by that date, your gift will be forfeited.

Ummmm, where’s the AFTER pics? I hope this man didn’t do her heair and then let her leave his salon with her face looking like THAT, did he?
Its amazing how Derek J can help all these women get their Afros and dangling weaves in order but he refuses to put an inch of hair on that big, black, shiny, bald head of his own. If you’re gonna wear an evening gown, then damn, at least put on a wig or something! That Barry White in Louboutins look isn’t alluring.
Would have been nice to see a before and after shot, I glad he did a good deed. Derek J does amazing work. I first went to him when my hair was extremely dry and sun damaged from being in a Caribbean climate for an extended period of time. He did a steam treatment (which I never heard of) on my hair before working his magic. I was completely impressed by him being able to save my hair from extreme dryness. His staff was also very fun and seemed to enjoy working for him. I hate beauty parlors were you sit down and you feel the tension in the air. He is pricey but he is well worth it.
Derek J does great work but I agree with Doubting Thomas, where are the AFTER PICS?? Did she not have time for the make-up? I digress…
She’s a cute girl and I love her hair!! Leave it to these bitter commenting bishes to pick out someone’s flaws! Damn! Maybe she doesn’t like all that mud on her face like y’all ignant asses!
People are really tryin it!
Agree 100%
I thank you for the comment and no I opted not to put on makeup that morning because it was roughly 9am I just wanted to show we could be beautiful with our OWN hair and skin.
I don’t think u need make up to begin with. Naturally pretty. Congrats on winning;)
Thank you love;-) MAC does not define who I am as a woman and I thank you for understanding that:-)
Folks can be so damn negative she was 1st runner up maybe make-up wasnt included. Who cares still look nice. Her hair is beautiful. Kudos to the stylist!
Well she could’ve AT LEAST ran to the ladies room and put on sum lipstick and mascara b4 takin the pic for the AFTER shot!
No it was roughly 9am and that was not the look I was going for as black women we need to first learn to be comfortable in OUR OWN SKIN and HAIR. I think I did that just nicely:-)
She looks lovely, good work Derek J as usual.
I’m sorry some of you were so overwhelmed and oppressed by my comments. Its not my fault you lost the contest. But for clarification, I nor anyone else on this thread said this young woman was unattractive. She’s actually very pretty. That being the case, it should have been a no-brainer for Derek J. to turn her into a masterpiece by doing an exquisite job on both her hair AND make-up. He didn’t.
What I and others said was plain and obvious to anybody with at least one functioning eyeball: Her hair looks nice (not spectacular) and her face, by comparison, could have used some attention. That’s that.
But I blame this on Derek J. OK, we get that he treats his clients nice but his goal should have been to make this woman look like she was just crowned Miss America. Isn’t he a celebrity stylist? Did he not know that people would critique his work since this contest was posted on several major blogs? He did a half ass job in my opinion. It is what it is. And once ole girl looked in a mirror, she shoulda slapped him across that big bald head of his.
As a professional stylist I agree that he did not put much into her finished looked…the hair? Mediocre at best…I, like others was expecting to see a full "make over" not some one going in one way and coming out the same way..To my knowledge a make over means to make someone look glammed…she could’ve done that with her own curling tools…sorry! try again! Not impressed…fyi to the contest winner…A professional cosmetologist SHOULD be polite and attentitive, as well as knowledgeable about hair care…Him working with natural hair is a dime a dozen these days…and sorry but the hair style he gave you was a dime dozen too…oh yea boo please stop lying abt the tracks, be more truthful when you say he worked with your natural hair…I say that because no healthy hair stylist would color the bottom of textured the way yours is lightned on the bottom..its unhealthy and will break your stuff off with in a month..so yes those are tracks!
You wish they were tracks boo so you wouldn’t be doing my hair either if you can’t tell natural hair from weave…. A yr ago I was blonde and didnt like it so its bn growing out ever since we debated that day on coloring it as well but because I’m ALL NATURAL I opted not to do any more coloring!!! Now you try again!!! Have a seat_/
Boom! You tell ‘em Shiobhan! Love your name by the way.
Thank boo;-) Renee ((((hugs)))) as women we need to learn to extend a hand to pick one another up and stop being so quick to push down.
Girl stfu I can’t understand why some black females are so worried about the health of another black females hair! I bet your roof is missing….no edges having self.
Lmao;-)
