I’m sure you’ve heard about all the drama that unfolded Saturday evening at the Civic Center but just in case you haven’t let me give you a brief summation: The Alpha Phi Alphas from Central State University won it for the men in the fraternity competition, while Zeta Tau Alpha, an all white sorority from Arkansas beat the prim and proper AKA’s from Indiana in a major upset.

That’s all. There’s really nothing else you need to know. Well… besides the fact that the crowd of historically Black fraternities (i.e. The “Divine 9″) didn’t take too kindly to the win. You could have literally heard a pin drop as Ludacris, the evening’s host, prepared to announce the 2nd place winner.
There were a ton of upset greeks at the Civic Center and I thought there was gonna be a riot when the disgruntled crowd started booing!
A stunned Ludacris had to re-iterate to the crowd that it was the judges who chose the winner, and minutes after the final announcement the judges were promptly ushered out as the crowd got unruly. (Peep Monica, Chilli & DeVyne jetting out at about 3:29)

Notice also on the vid, how a lot of the crowd leaves before Luda even announces Zeta Tau Alpha as the winners. Y’all know your mamas taught you better than that…
Now correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t we all supposed to be supportive of those who work hard and win no matter what color they are? Truth be told…those chicks totally rocked their routine!
So…why y’all mad? Seriously. We can have a Black president but White chicks winning the step show is off limits? SMH… GetOVERit.com! Oh yeah….Drake performed for about 5 minutes around midnight. Peep the full list of winners + Drake’s performance below:

I will start with a great idea……however gone sadly wrong. I am not going to hate on the fact that ZTA won they did great HOWEVER the fact that you took a tradition of Divine 9 Organizations and pulling other Greeks into is frowned upon by me and a group of Greeks that i have spoke to about this. It is a shame that we cant have our own ways of expressing our Orgs. Stepping and strolling is what WE do and NOT all Greeks or even auxiliary groups for that matter.
Again the tone of this is not of attitude it is more so of upset and a point out of how this show is all in all wrong to me. I feel like tradition should be respected. And not use D9 Greeks to gain numbers by only having them in your ads and promos.
I have been reading that my Sorors taught them how to step. Blank stare. And from the video you (ATLien) sent me on twitter, it seems that he copied my Sorors’ (TAU) costumes. The white girls added jackets.
Nevertheless, they did were surprisingly good in the execution of the step routine.
Honestly people were not upset because they were white and they were the better team. They were upset at the fact that the AKA’s from IU had a much better routine with more difficult steps, greater technique, and killer precision then the ZTA’s and yet they still somehow manage to lose. Also the fact the Sprite used the faces and images of the Divine 9 only to give the crown to ZTA was also an issue. Don’t get me wrong, ZTA rocked it and deserved to place, but not win.
re-watch their performance closely, ZTA had no major mistakes…whereas the AKA’s had 4 distinct errors, with all of them coming from the same girl who is in the front middle on most of the routines….thats why they didnt win…dont hate!!!!
Congrats to the ladies for putting on a good routine…they deserved to win! So not only are white women taking all of the educated successful black men from black women but they are taking the step competitions too. Damn! Karma is a mofo!

From what I can’t see, they won that shit fair and square by a fucking long shot!!
As a 40-something veteran stepper and a judge of many step shows past, it is quite clear that the ladies of Zeta Tau Alpha stepped their a**es off!!! They stepped for more than 9 minutes with less than 70 seconds total of down time to rest and catch their breath. Their precision and execution –criteria that step judges pay close attention to — were outstanding! Ryan Cameron said it best at the end of their performance “Steppin’ is for er’body. If you can step, you can step!” A lot of times steppers are scored on crowd appeal. It was sad to see the same crowd that cheered and stayed on their feet throughout ZTA’s show, would sink to an audience’s lowest denominator and boo because the outcome wasn’t what they wanted. Had the ZTA’s been a black sorority, would the crowd have reacted the same way? Hardly. To members of the Divine 9, please use this year’s show as a motivation to get your organization’s step team together, practice, practice, practice and win the 2011 step off. Don’t hate, participate! Congratulations Zeta Tau Alpha!
What an awesome way to look at it SeasonedStepper,
just to let you know for one of the comments above, I am a white girl engaged to a black man….WHITE GIRLS DON’T TAKE YOUR MEN sorry to let you know , I didn’t force my black man to propose to me. How about some black men and some white girls just love each other, no matter race or creed….god the reverse racism!!!! It gets soooooooo old, can you imagine if this woulda happened to an all black cheerleading squad or something?! It would be all over CNN about how racist it is. Think about that one before you assume every white person is racist, obviously there are some in the black community that are just as racist as some in the white community. Stop hating because they killed it!!! You just didnt work as hard as they did.
The Zetas were good but lacked cadence and a certain je ne se quois. Yes, the AKAs did flip their hair too much, but their routine featured elements that the Zetas did not-balancing your leg on your teammate’s back while performing is impressive; gyrating your hips as if you are at a club is not. The Zetas were adequate. They were robbed just like the AKAs;the Zetas were rewarded for mediocrity. Alicia Keys is a decent pianist but she will never be in the same conversation as Beethoven. My point? The ladies of Zeta put on a performance that was worthy of recognition, but not much else. Their delivery was soft and dare I say it, I could almost see them counting the steps in their head. To exceed mediocrity, you must surpass being able to get the moves but evoking a response that sends tremors of emotions, not yelps of excitement at seeing someone drop it like it’s hot. I don’t think they should share the award. The AKAs should not participate and just stick to local circuits and HBUs.
Generally the crowd could have been more polite all the way around…
ya STILL can’t takes folks no wherez in my estimation.
plus, the crowded booed over the 2nd place finishers while there were contestants still remaining on stage, so they weren’t necessarily booing the eventual winners since they had no idea who would win.
3rdly, if you listen to the background chatter it sounded like someone felt that the Zeta’s had the best performance and therefore deserved to win.
I think many in the crowd knew that as well.
My issue is again, the overall crowd. They should have shown maturity and waited for the announcements and not walk off in a pout because their school didn’t win.
It’s called good sportsmanship and it seems to me that some of us folks still have a long way to go in that department.
grow UP!
The Zeta’s brought it…as the saying goes…What I’d like to see in the other contestants and see how they did.
Another thing…this is just like the row that ensues when a white woman is chosen as a homecoming queen at these predominately all black schools….
It’s ironic that black folks who fought for inclusiveness now want to exclude whites from enjoying those same privileges…makes no sense at all.
Dear M,
Please allow me to explain something to you before you flip out on the reverse racism.
It is JUST as bad with us African Americans. If it were a black cheerleading squad honey, nothing would happen. NOTHING AT ALL. So don’t think that everything is uneven on our side because when it comes down to it, white is right.
Don’t believe me?
I live on the east coast. Please tell me why 2 weeks after the event, I found out about Pi Kappa Alpha hosting that “Compton Cook out” at UCSD and NOBODY did ANYTHING about it. It BARELY made the news.
How’s that racism for you?
I don’t see in colors personally, I think if you’re engaged to a black man you should start seeing it that way too because from how it sounds, you’re not doing to well with that.
ANYWAY
I don’t think the crowd was mad at the fact that it was a white sorority. I personally was pissed off because the AKA’s TAUGHT them most of the stuff they know. So maybe most of the crowd felt cheated? I know I would.
@NICOLE
So if your gonna speak on ZTA rollling their hips like they are in a club speak on how the AKA’s were splitting like they were in a strip club. I love me some AKA’s. Hell, many of my closest friends are AKA’s but fair is fair. speak on it ALL or none of it at all.
I first want 2 start off by saying…yes im blk now that we have cleared that. Iam very upset at the fact that ppl r hating on this soror ZTA. when i heard that they had won i just had to see there routine and what an explosive one it was. they stepped for nearly 10 minutes there were no dance routines no crazy voice over’s or skits they did some hard core pure stepping. so then i watched the AKA’s and yes they deserved what they got and that was 2nd place. first they started off with a routine that wansn’t even their’s it was janet jackson but i guess everyone missed that part and don’t get me worng the routine in a whole was good but ppl lets be honest they did not do better then the ZTA’s and i pissed of at the fact that sprite is not sticking up for these girls i know that mostly blk ppl come to these compititions so they gotta keep the money and sponsers from the blk community some how but to tell the ZTA’s that they have to share there crown which they have worked so hard for is complete BULLS@%T. but they say its not what you know it’s who you know and so the AKA’s got what they cried for a pitty win. next time step your game up and you won’t have to worry about being beat by some “White Girls”

I PERSONALLY TAUGHT STEP TO A WHITE HIGH SCHOOL STEP TEAM AND MY MOTHER AND I BOTH WERE ADVISORS AND I WAS THE TRAINER. WE ENCOUNTERED THE SAME DISCRIMINATION AND I AM BLACC! OTHER S SCHOOLS IN NC AND OUR CITIES I.E. CONCORD AND CHARLOTTE, HAD NEVER KNOWN THAT CABARRUS COUNTY(CONCORD) HAD TEAMS THAT COULD STEP LIKE THAT. WE WENT ON TO WIN THREE CONSECUTIVE TRI-STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND EVEN HAD OTHER SCHOOLS REPLICATE US YEAR AFTER YEAR AND THEY PROMOTER AND ORGANIZER OF THE SHOW WAS AN AKA AND SHE GAVE THE BIGGEST PROPS AND WOULD PURPOSELY BRING IN SOME THE BEST TEAMS FROM VA SC NC AND GA TO COMPETE AND YET WE STILL DID IT CAUSE THEY WORKED HARD AND PERFORMED AND STEPPED NOT DANCED AND STRIPPER CLAPPED. WE HAVE TOO MUCH TO WORRY ABOUT RACIALLY AND NATIONALLY THEN TO PUT THIS MUCH EFFORT INTO DEBATING ABOUT A WHITE TEAM BEATING A BLACV TEAM. GET OVER IT. AKA’S GOT THERE DUE AND YES IT WAS A PITTY WIN. ZTA DID THEIR THING HANDS-DOWN. BESIDES, THERE ARE PLENTY OF LATINA AND LATINO ORGS THAT STEP BETTER THAN SOME D9′S THAT I KNOW. AND YES I AM GREEK SO PLEASE NO BANTOR ABOUT WHAT I DO AND DONT KNOW. FINAL FACT, STEPPING WASNT CREATED BY BLACK GLO’S IT WAS ORGINATED IN AFRICA FROM THE AFRICAN GUMBOOT TRIBES AS COMMUNICATION AND WAYS TO PASS THE TIME WHILE WORKING. DO YOUR RESEARCH. THAT IS WHY OUR TEAM WON BECUASE THEY TOOK THE TIME TO RESEARCH AND STUDY..ISNT THAT WHAT MOST INTAKE PROCESSES ARE ABOUT? THEN WHY NOT APPLY THAT TO WHAT YOU CALL D9′S COPYRIGHT-STEPPING. BE MAD IF YOU WANT BUT SEASONED STEPPER, AND A LOT OF OTHERS MAKE SENSE AND THOSE WHO ARE MAKING IT A RACE ISSUE, YOU HAVE A LOT OF GROWING UP AND SOUL SEARCHING TO DO. STOP COMPLAINING BEING PART OF THE PROBLEM, STUDY FOCUS AND PRACTICE AND BE PART OF THE SOLUTION. AS GOES IN INVICTUS, ZTA HAD A MENACE AND WAS UNAFRAID! IF YOU KNOW THE POEM YOU KNOW WHAT I AM SPEAKING ON!
I really like your post. Always been very informational. I hope you’ll keep up the good work and maintain the standard. Best of luck.
