  • Celebrity Hairstylist Derek J Responds To Rumors He’s UNLICENSED… *DOCUMENTS*

    Oct, 29 2012 | Written by ATLien

Earlier today a huge batch of TEA about Atlanta hairstylists Lawrence Washington (right) and Derek J (left) was spilled online.

It’s been rumored for years that the two celebrity stylists have been working on heads without the proper state credentials but apparently some salty hairstylist has decided to dig it all up again.

    Explosive details + Derek J’s response below…

Celebrity blogger Sandra Rose recently got word that the two celebrity stylists have been working on heads without the proper credentials.

According to my reader who asked to remain anonymous, neither Derek J nor Lawrence are licensed to practice cosmetology in the state of Georgia. In fact, Lawrence’s cosmetology license was suspended last year after he applied for a license reinstatement — and the board leaned that he had been styling hair in Georgia for years on an expired license.

The board suspended Lawrence’s license for 2 years in accordance with a consent agreement that Lawrence signed last year. That means he cannot style hair in Georgia until his suspension is lifted in 2013.

On the other hand, Derek J has never held a cosmetology license to practice in Georgia. Derek does have a valid license in another state, which is not valid here in Georgia. (READ MORE)

I asked Derek about the rumors a while back and he confirmed that he is indeed licensed in another state.

He also told me that he considers himself a “traveling stylist” due to the fact that he is often booked to travel around the world with his celebrity clientele. That being said, if Derek was forced to be licensed in every state he did hair, he’d probably be training for decades.

While there is some truth to the story of him not being licensed (in the State of Georgia), Derek grew tired of the insinuations surrounding his craft and proceeded to get the Georgia licensing issue resolved months ago.

After the story was posted, Derek issued the following response via Twitter, along with a screen shot of his application, which has been sitting for months.

Lawrence on the other hand… who fell out of former “housewife” Sheree Whitfield’s good graces after her hair began to thin and shed under his care, has yet to respond.

However it’s true that he’s apparently barred from doing hair in the state of Georgia until March 31, 2014.

During the RHOA special that aired last night, Lawrence was asked about all the talk about he and Sheree falling out and his “politically correct” answer was that he was still Sheree’s friend even if she wasn’t his, so I’m assuming that all the shade thrown on and off the show toward’s his former client was all just for fun.

[READ: RHOA's Lawrence Throws Former BFF Sheree Whitfield a Lil Shade... ]

Hopefully this clears up all the rumors and innuendo about these celebrity stylists… maybe… maybe not. All I know is… I ain’t giving up Derek J for NONAYALL!

Would you still trust these two “unlicensed” master stylists with your tresses?

EXCUSE ME..HOW MANY "KITCHEN" HAIR DRESSERS WAS IN YOUR FAMILY OR GROUP OF FRIENDS? DON’T EVEN GO THERE HONEY, JUST BECAUSE YOU DON’T HAVE A LICENSE DON’T MEAN YOU DON’T KNOW HOW TO DO HAIR PROPERLY! NEXT ITEM PLEASE! AS FOR DEREK AND LAWRENCE YALL CONTINUE TO DO WHAT YALL ARE DOING, DEREK IS LICENSED JUST NOT IN GEORGIA, LAWRENCE LICENSE IS ON PROBATION STATUS FOR WHATEVER REASON BUT IT CLEARY SAYS HE HAS ONE AND IF HE DIDN’T IT WOULDN’T HAVE AN EXPIRATION DATE ON IT FOOLS!

@ Anthony I think that you need to reread the document. Lawrence is on PROBATION until 3/ at that time he can reapply for reinstatement then…

@Vay, no you need to re-read it. His license is active, but on probation. He can apply for termination of his probation in March 2014! I am a licensed professional so please don’t try to explain to me what I know for sure!

            To clarify:

ACTIVE – active, unrestricted and in good standing

PROBATION – active, but with some form of restriction or limitation

SUSPENDED – not active and unable to practice due to current or pending disciplanary action

LAPSED – inactive due to failure to renew license

          • Vay says:
            October 29, 2012 at 7:35 pm

ummmmmmmmm did you read what I typed? You said it was "active" as if he was all good to do hair their with no restrictions when that is not the case. Even if it’s active he is on PROBATION and some people may want to know that if he is digging in their head!

BUT more importantly let me be clear…I dont live in GA and when I visit my hair is done so I wont need services from either one of these men so…I really dont care. lol

THE DIFFERENCE IN A ‘KITCHEN’ HAIR DRESSER AND THESE TWO IS THAT YOU KNOW THEY ARE A ‘KITCHEN’ HAIR DRESSER SO BUYER BEWARE. THESE TWO BEING ON TV, CLAIMING CELEB CLIENTS AND ONE OWNING A SHOP SUPERVISING OTHERS & ON THE NEWS PLAYING SHOOTING VICTIM GIVES A CLIENT THE EXPECTATION THAT THEY ARE ON THE UP & UP AND LICENSED. ISN’T IT FUNNY THAT THEY WERE ON LAST NIGHT PUTTING OTHERS ON BLAST AND NOT EVEN 24 HRS LATER THEY ARE BEING BLASTED TO THE MOON. LOL!!! KARMA IS A BEY-OTCH!!!! I WONDER IF SHEREE OR THE OTHER HOUSEWIVES GAVE SANDRA THE TIP? LOL!!! AND THE STATE OF GEORGIA AIN’T ISH FOR LETTING THIS FRAUD CONTINUE. I’M SURE SOMETHING WILL HAPPEN NOW THAT THEY ARE ON BLAST TOO…..JENNY JONES!!!

I’m shocked that all these people from Atlanta (and other places) are on tv KNOWING they have dirt that could come out. Don’t get me wrong, we all have dirt, but dang, I wouldn’t be able to go on tv with the stuff some of these people have in their backgrounds. Like Sheree’s scheming and Marlo’s numerous mug shots. Those two might want to keep a low profile. But yes, it’s not wise to go on tv bashing others when you have a whole closet full of mess yourself. It’s only a matter of time before it comes out!

No, if you don’t have a license, you cannot properly treat someone’s hair. Stylist learn about chemicals, the anatomy of hair, textures, and so on. Yes, "kitchen" hair dressers can make a person’s hair look nice, but at what cost? They are not trained to advise a client on properly taking care of their hair once they leave their "kitchen" chair. As far as Derek and Lawrence goes, they have been licensed before and they have been trained properly. It’s just a matter of having their paperwork in order.

The "for whatever reason" is the problem. Licenses exist to maintain standards of safety and the kitchen hair dressers are the reason why so many sisters are walking around damn near bald-headed, pathcy and peasy and in need of lacefronts and costco wigs. I don’t wanna hear nothing about "he still do good hair". Apparently Sheree didn’t think so and Derrick don’t even style Kim Ho’s wigs anymore.

Maybe that’s the reason Sheree’s hair fell out. Maybe Lawrence didn’t know what he was doing after all. Made Sheree’s hair fall out, probably made other people’s hair fall out, maybe they all complained and he wound up on probation.

i agree that many kitchen hair dresses can do hair…hell, i do my family and friends hair all the time. however…it is like driving without a license…you know how to operate a vehicle but under the law you cannot b/c you become a liability to everyone else. the liability lies in applying chemicals to ones head, sanitation, and understanding conditions of hair based on more than just what it looks like. if something goes wrong then you’re not azzed out b/c you chose to get it done in a kitchen. if you’re charging those high prices i need to see a license.

I got may hair cut a few years ago from a woman I found out no longer had her license. She was doing hair out of her home (she has a shop set up in her home) and she told me when I was about to get in the chair that she no longer had her license. I was like, "Well, I like the way you cut my hair last time, so who cares." I went ahead a let her do my hair. A license is required, but it won’t stop people from coming to you to do their hair if you do a good job.

At the end of the day Derek owns a shop in Atlanta and has been doing hair there since at least the RHWOA first start (4-5 years ago). Although he applied for his hair license in April of 2012. He has still been doing hair illegally for the past 4-5 plus years. As far has traveling hairstylist his home base is ATL. I’m sure he listed his residents as Georgia. Wonder where he is registered to vote and where does he pay taxes. That is the state his hair license needs to be in. As far as Lawrence goes I wonder if Sheree can sue him if he really made her hair fall out all while he was doing hair with no license. HMMMMM…..

You can’t be a doctor from haiti and practice medicine here in the states. Licenses are important, trraining is important and keeping your skills upgraded is important. These ninjas are working with chemicals and if they are not licensed then they put their clients and themselves at risk.

Is Lawrence’s name Brian Kemp? So he not licensed as a hair dresser and his driver’s license don’t coincide with his public and business name. He just lying all over the place! I bet that birkin is FAKE too!

Yeah they have license with some technicalities attached..but as for the previous comment you do need to have some knowledge when it comes to doing hair especially when it comes to chemicals. So you know how to slap in a relaxer in your bathroom and apply box color..but what happens when you start loosing edges and hair starts breaking?? That’s where the license and professionalism comes in. To help prevent that from happening. Most know how to style and do the basics to get the job done..but that is the reason why most women are opting out of chemicals because these hair stylists were taking their hair out..So yes you need a license because practicing without one is against the law and the state board can fine you and more if you are caught practicing without one.

I really respect how Derreck J handled this whole situation. He’s right in that he can’t be licensed in EVERY state and foreign country. I do think he did the right thing to submit an application though. Good for him! Hopefully Lawrence gets his situation straight since he primarily does hair in Atlanta.

I’m thinking that this should be the catalyst for a NATIONAL licensing board like every other profession with regional offices. It would be a lot easier for traveling stylists.

My guess is that GA has stricter standards than where they were originally licensed. Maybe they can’t qualify in GA. Lawrence look like he learned to do hair off of tv.

Miss Lawrence is currently licesned in the state of Georgia. His license is ACTIVE, but on probation until 2014. Legally, he is allowed to do hair in the state of Georgia, but there are some conditions attached regarding notifying the board if he travels out of state to do hair for an exteneded period of time. Let’s not character assassinate over something so trivial, especially before getting the facts correct!

Thank you! First the letter said that they "are not" licensed but its obvious that they are. I think that this is a salty competitor stylist trying to ruin these two because they are getting a lot of shine. Why remain anonymous? You bold enough to put their business out there then be woman or man enough to come forward. The hate needs to stop. Its not a good look. Make sure you have all your facts straight before trying to put someone on blast.

I really don’t have any feelings about these men and their license issues or lack thereof…either the board will catch up to them or not. *Shrugs* I don’t think that this will even matter to their loyal customers one way or the other. Speaking of loyalty…I get being a blogger and wanting to always be the one to spill the tea BUT if Sandra and Derek J were as cool as SHE wanted everyone to believe why wouldn’t she talk to him about this before posting that story? She knew last night according to twitter that she was going to post it. At what point is your loyalty to someone more important than exposing them! I cant with her. With THAT being said…to Derek J this is probably exactly how Kandi felt last night when according to her you threw her under the bus for bravo!!! Get it together folks and stop letting dollar signs rule over common sense.

I agree with the poster that said even though Derek J travels, he should at least be licensed in the state he resides in. That said, if his app has been pending for months then the situation is out of his control. I don’t see the big deal here. There are dozens of women all over with ads posted via Craigslist, Instagram and Twitter, offering their services. It’s clear that they know what they are doing, so let them be.

Lol I’ve seen Derek J. on many TV shows that focus on hair and he has judged a lot of hair shows. On RHOA they both seem to have specialities Derek’s seems to be wigs or fantasy hair and Miss L’s seems to like weaves. I wonder if Miss Lawerence’s probation is due to him messing up more than Sheree’s hair. I wonder if she paid him? May be a case for Judge Mathis. Lol

You do "in fact" have to be a licensed cosmetologist to perform cosmetology services. Lawrence and Derek knows this (fans can be so damn deaf dumb and blind)

Because they dress a certain way does not discredit as men in any ways possible. How can being gay go too far? Gay is Gay…all day , every day!!!! The grown behind men can do what they like. That’s just like some saltine walking around screaming…The black people are being tooo Black and are TAKING IT TOO FAR!!!! They need to stop wearing white people clothes, just stick to wearing knock off gucci and louis vuitton and wal mart baby phat and keep their pants sagging because that’s how blacks dress. Please GTOFOH with that homophobic BS. That is all it is. You can’t put lipstick on a pig and call it a dog, lol. You are a bigot and be proud you are a bigot, just like THESE MEN ARE GLAD TO BE MEN WHO SLEEP WITH OTHER MEN AND YOU CAN’T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT!!!! LOL.

I can’t believe in 2012 people are still spewing ignorance like this, but hell I should believe it…white folk so tired of the black man in office they rather vote a person in office who basically telling them he doesn’t give a shit about them and also blatantly tell women its their fault if they get raped and get pregnant…heifer you better make sure that rape wasn’t legitimate, either way you gotta keep that rape baby to remind you of that horrific episode every day!!! Yes licenses are important unlesss women want to walk around bald headed with scabs and rashes. I had an unlicensed heffeir work on my head and it took 2 years and prescription meds to get my hair back. It aint as thick and lovely as it used to be but its a blessing she didn’t ruin me completely.

Also it is incredibly mental and stupid to me why gay men who DON’T LIKE WOMEN want to act and dress like women and gay women who DON’T LIKE MEN want to act and dress like men. If that aint proof that gay is a mental disease then folks is just blind, deaf and dumb. If somebody walked around saying they were the reincarnation of Abe Lincoln and demanding to be president, we’d lock their asses up but Lawrence walks around in girl clothes, talkingbout he a woman and Derek J getting hormone shot to grow tits and built like a damn rubiks cube and you all think that ish is normal? @Meiqua, well technically Ma’am they’ve been doing all of that. And unless you are a cosmetologist "intern" (person who is in cosmetology school working towards a cosmetology license, working beside a licensee cosmetologist in a licensed salon) you dont have to have a license, you are simply their to train, this person does not get paid for the services they render, however they are entitled to school credits. Also the cosmetology school your attending must submit a notification of participation in the Cosmetology Externship Program form to the Board in order for you to intern. Ma’am you cant even shampoo hair/ prep/ dress a person for a cosmetology service without channeling the proper procedures. Please have a seat, and learn your business!

If those men claim to be cosmetologist they need to be licensed, simple!

I am a mother of a son who is gay and I would like to share his thoughts during one of our cherished conversations. Coming from a man who is gay he shared his personal dislike for men who are gay and cross dress as women. He says that the lifestyle is hard enough to deal with as it is with this not being a choice but how one is born… to complicate it even more with men impersonating and cross dressing as women. He explains that a man who has to dress as a woman dislikes his own self and has to trick himself into believing that dressing this way will make being gay more exceptable to themselves and society. It is a form of self hate and being unable to except the FACT that he as a man that is attracted to the same sex. He explained that a lot of gay men who are ok with their gay sexuality believe that being overly flamboyant in bodily actions, with words , and cross dressing as a women is equaly bothersome to them(gays) as well. So please don’t feel that way because a heterosexual points out how rediculous these two (Derick J and Miss Lawrence) look.

That is your son’s opinion and his alone. MOST cross dressers are heterosexual (straight), some are transgendered (can be gay or straight/male or female), and some are more comfortable dressing a particular way. That does not mean they are confused, that does mean they want to be the opposite sex, they are people who they are or, in the case of transgenders and transsexuals, who they were meant to be.

      October 30, 2012 at 8:39 pm

There is a reason to become a professional licensed Cosmetologist. Beyond the ability to style hair a practitioner must know how to practice sanitation and equally understand why it is important. Unsanitary practice is the cause of spreading disease (herpes, hepatitis) and bacteria (MRSA) that can cause a serious infection or even death. It is in the patrons best interest that the states enforce licensure of those wanting to practice on the public. All too many times both in the salon I work in and when testing candidates who persue a cosmetology license use unsanitary practice. I bet you will change your tune and want to sue your kitchen beautician if you happen to contract herpes of the eye from wax that has become tainted due to double dipping a spatula from a previous client who is infected or contract a staph infection from implements (clippers, combs, etc.) that have been used on several clients (one of them being infected) and has not been sanitized AT ALL. If your serious about your health, don’t let someone be in control of you contracting disease or becoming infected simply because they can style some hair. They should be held accountable if something should go wrong. Not only that, but persuing proper licensure means they take the profession seriously.

I should have had my license revoked…my damn drivers license for being stupid enough to drive to Sally and get it and think I could do that. It stuck out all over like flat popsicle sticks and stunk like something. I take no chances now, I don’t care what it costs. I’ll sell blood. But I won’t ever do that again.
