Keri Hilson & Jill Scott joined the cast and crew of Lifetime’s Steel Magnolia’s for a special screening of the film last Wednesday (October 3, 2012).
The movie, which features an all Black version of the cast, premiered on the network last night (October 8, 2012) to historic numbers. 
According to Rodney Ho of the AJC, the remake of the classic film accumulated over 6.5 million viewers, making it the third most popular original telecast in the network’s history.
Overall 25-54 numbers were the best for Lifetime in 17 years since “Almost Golden: The Jessica Savitch Story.”
Its female 25-54 numbers were the highest in Lifetime’s history in the film category and a basic cable best at least since 2004, according to Nielsen Research.
Steel Magnolia’s was directed by local playwright and producer Kenny Leon and and stars Queen Latifah, Phylicia Rashad and Alfre Woodard. It was shot in Atlanta earlier this year, and features several local actors in smaller roles.

I tried to watch it, but I didn’t finish. This movie proves that remaking a classic isn’t always a good thing. This cast did not hae the chemisrty of the original, and they shouuld have left it alone!!!
Girl hush! I saw the original and I loved both. I thought the characters were really easy to relate to and I didn’t stop crying the whole movie. They did a great job.

OMG! I was really looking forward to watching this but i was really disappointed in it. The script was like word for word from the original and the country accents were wayyyy offf!! I mean its nothing I expected. It sucked point blank period. they shulda just left that alone

I hate to say this, but I was disappointed, I was so very excited to see it, but it just couldn’t hold my attention. The only things that stood out to me were that Condola Rashad over acted and Lance Gross is fine in any setting. I watched the original earlier that day, and it was just way more entertaining. I applaud their effort, and it was WONDERFUL to see an all African-American female cast, though.
I was very disappointed. When I found out they were even making this movie, I was upset. Steel Magnolias is a classic that women of all races loved, there was no reason for the remake. It was beautiful cast but I will agree with the previous post, the southern accents needed work and Condola was a little too tough and extra for me.
I saw the original but got busy last night and missed watching the remake. My friends told me it was horrible even though they had a great cast with the exception of some young actress who they said could not act at all.
HORRIBLE. Whoever played Shelby could not act at all. I too was upset they were remaking the original but love all the actresses so I gave it a chance. The accents were way off, having the exact same lines lines from years ago but updating the film to now made it just seem out of touch. Oh and the "wobble" scene where people are looking into the camera and looking just a mess, was just too much. These women are way too talented for this movie to be THAT bad…. Booooo. As the saying goes "hated it"

Not fan of remakes but I will watch this one because of the cast. All are well know actors except the african young lady. I only saw her in one other movie (Pariah) and she did well.

I enjoyed it, it was a refreshing change on a sunday night from the regular reality shows.
I enjoyed the remake. I loved seeing African American women in a positive light versus seeing them sell their soul for reality tv. Maybe if it was Basketball wives or Love & Hip Hop we’d be more excited.
This movie was awesome!!! Almost all of the characters matched the original counterparts with the exception of Queen Latifah and the guy that played her husband. Sorry but she could never pull off a Sally Fields role. But all in all it was a great movie and it actually did defer from the original script. So for those that say it was "word for word" to the original either didn’t watch this or the original very close.

i like the movie the accents were off but overall the movie was good though it will never be the orginal i think everyone did a great job.There was no comparison when Julie Roberts played Shelby and to Phylicia Rashad daughter they could have found a stronger actress. But i still like it
i really liked it, some of the acting could have been better, i personally think queen was too young to act someone mother and grandmother, so to me queen latifah should have played the daughter and alfre shoudl have played the mother….other than that, it was great, i even cried when shelby died in the hospital because i been there with an uncle!
they should have made it a series instead of a movie….

It’s hard re making a big classic such as this one without the appropriate budget.
The ending from the original has a climax, the re make, I think should have had a different ending. It seemed as though they ran out of money as well as time.

Nothing will ever compare to the original…
I was not dissappointed because I like the story line of Steel Magnolia’s. This is not what I expected. There was no chemisty, the accents where over the top. Nelle looked like a Run-away slave and Shelbi was not a good choice. I never understood why they were doing the wobble at the reception or why Shelbi’s husband husband looked slower than she did. If was suppose to be a all black cast but Weezer’s suitor was still white. I agree with the first post, there don’t need to be a black version of everything. If that is the case, I can’t wait to see the white version of Roots.
