OMG! This may be old to some of you but I totally missed Lauryn Hill‘s mugshot the other day!
Hill posed for the mugshot above on June 29 after pleading guilty to the three-count misdemeanor filed in U.S. District Court in Newark, New Jersey for tax evasion.
The iconic songstress faces three years behind bars after admitting she failed to file tax returns between 2005 and 2007, during which time she earned $1.8 million.

It probably didn’t take too long for Hill to be found guilty of the charges… especially since she admitted it in an online letter where she said she didn’t owe taxes because she’s not a part of society.
I left a more mainstream and public life, in order to wean both myself, and my family, away from a lifestyle that required distortion and compromise as a means for maintaining it. During this critical healing time, there were very few people accessible to me who had not already been seduced or affected by this machine, and therefore who could be trusted to not try and influence or coerce me back into a dynamic of compromise…

A reality check from Uncle Sam forced Hill to returned to mainstream society and her attorney, Nathan Hochman, says she plans to finally pay her taxes: $818,000 from 2005, $222,000 from 2006 and $761,000 from 2007.
The 37-year-old grammy winner is currently free on a $150,000 unsecured bond, is scheduled to be sentenced on November 27.
Remember kids… PAY YO TAXES!

I think that’s her way of saying that the entertainment industry is filled with people who have sold their souls for fame and fortune and that many celebs are on drugs. That’s how I interepreted it anyway. The words "distortion" and "compromise" suggest to me that she was asked to do things she wasn’t comfortable with or that did not align with her faith.
Still, if you can make all of that money, you might as well pay the crooked uncle sam his due.
I agree with your last sentence. Why do people still play around with the IRS in 2012? If don’t nothing else work in America, you better believe the IRS is working. They stay on point. No matter what’s happening. And they will get their money.
I blame the public for making her believe she was more special than she really is. At best she didn’t practice anything she sang/ rapped/ preached. She thought dropping kids like candy wrappers was going to get her the last name Marley EPIC FAIL… She hasn’t been a positive role model for women or girls or anybody for that matter.. She is such an amazing artist, and she always had such amazing style. If you read the letter closely, it sounds as if she feared for her life. We don’t know the details, and she apparently can’t divulge the details. Still, she must pay her taxes.
We all need to be sending up positive prayers for her.

In Lauren’s defense, she isn’t the only celeb who hasn’t paid her taxes (ie. Wesley Snipes). I have to agree with an earlier post, the media and "this machine" she’s referring to tends to put these music artists on a pedestal making them think they are so special and don’t have to do common folk things like pay their taxes.
Now that she’s no longer successful as she once was, she’s probably not in a position to pay back all the money she owes. I’m willing to bet this wouldn’t even be an issue with her had Lauren "sold her soul" and conformed to the mainstream machine she speaks of.
