Gabrielle Douglas of the U.S. Olympic Team may have publicly SAID she didn’t give a hoot what y’all thought about her hair, but apparently she has folded under all the pressure.
Gabby caused a stir not only for her Olympic medal wins in London but for her hair, while she dismissed it with the maturity of someone twice her 16 years of age, her team swooped into action and enlisted Hollywood hairstylist Ted Gibson to tame her mane prior to a few public appearances.
“I couldn’t believe it and still can’t,” says Gibson, who has worked on the tresses of Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie, Kate Gosselin and Ashley Greene, told The Daily Beast on Wednesday about the criticism Douglas received over her slicked-back ponytail.
“You have this young girl doing amazing things, and the conversation becomes about her hair? It was ridiculous and shameful.” (source)
Check out Gabby’s new look…
Cute… but she was cute with her ponytail IMO.
Gabby with Sharon Osbourne…
What do you think of Gabby’s new doo? Is it an improvement…

i honestly don’t think she had a “hair makeover”…… she had her hair the way she wanted while competing and doing routines…. now that she’s done, she’s being a 16 year old that’s rocking her hair how she prob would on a daily basis.
folks are doing too much with this topic!!
Leave her alone… she winning GOLD and folks worried bout’ her hair O_o
I agree…looking at the photo of her teammates, they all have their hair down…this would be how she would wear her hair when she is not competing… Get a grip!
FINALLY A FEW FOLKS WITH SOME COMMON SENSE. ITS QUITE OBVIOUS THAT MOST BLACK PEOPLE HAVEN’T BEEN WATCHING THE GYMNASTICS PART OF THE OLYMPICS ALL OF THESE YRS B/C IF THEY HAD THEY WOULD KNOW THAT A PONYTAIL OR BUN IS THE HAIRDO OF GIRLS COMPETING. I’VE SEEN SOME WHITE GIRLS WITH SOOOO MANY CLIPS AND BOBBY PINS TO HOLD THEIR HAIR(esp their bangs)IN A PONYTAIL THAT IT LOOKED CRAZY. MAYBE GABBY NOT HAVING A PERM MADE HER HAIR SWELL UP A WEE BIT AND NOT BE AS SLICK BUT SHE WAS STILL IN UNITY WITH ALL OF THE OTHER GIRLS. WHAT WAS SHE SUPPOSE TO BE FLIPPING ACROSS THE MAT WITH A WEAVE DOWN TO HER BUTT OR A NICKI MINJA LACEFRONT, ROCKING RED LIPSTICK, BELLY OUT & SOME RED BOTTOMS? LOL!!! YEAH HER HAIR IS DONE HERE BUT ITS PROBABLY THE FIRST CHANCE SHE’S HAD TIME TO GET IT DONE B/C THESE 5 GIRLS HAVE BEEN ON A WORLD WIND OF INTERVIEWS & PRESS JUNKETS SINCE THEY WON GOLD. I WISH ALL OF THE HATERS WOULD GO HAVE A SEAT & LEAVE THIS SUPERSTAR ALONE…….JENNY JONES!!!
Agreed. I’ve been watching gymnastics since I was a kid and they’ve all worn their hair like this for decades unless they have a short haircut like Mary Lou Retton had.
Yes ma’am…she’s going to be in photo after photo in the next several months, she doesnt wanna look back and say "DAYUM, I WAS DOIN MY DAMN THING BACK THEN, BUT I LOOKED LIKE A HOT MESS…WHY DIDN’T THEY HELP ME?"…
Really?!? That is what she would be worried about? You are so vain!
That girl’s hair is the least of her problems. I’m hoping Invisalign Teen throws an endorsement her way for that massive overbite she has!!
Yes, I think the overbite is more important than her hair.
Are y’all serious right now? This girl out there winning GOLD ( something I’m sure all of y’all can do from y’all comment couches) we should be holding her up to the sky for the STAR she is forget about the cosmetics!!!
I dont see much of a difference. I expected her to have her hair in a ponytail during the Olympics because she was in competition but it looks like she is just wearing it down here with a flat iron. Unless she got a relaxer (it doesn’t look like it) I don’t think there’s much to talk about.
It only make sense for her to not have a ponytail while she is shaking hands with important people and not on a balance beam performing at the olympics. She has money now… so why wouldn’t she have the best hairstylist in the world show us how she looks outside of a competition and turning into a millionaire. Now, if she pulled the ponytail look after the competition…. that would’ve been weird lol, so I wouldn’t call it a “Makeover”… i would say she’s being a human and dressing nice when she is going out like we all do lol
Just damn.
I think Gabby’s hair was OK for the Olympics, but I really don’t care about her hair she is just so cute and I am so proud of her!!
Thank you! Ignorant people making an issue about this child’s hair. She’s making history while they sit on their out of shape asses criticizing this girl. She’s a gymnast, how should her hair have looked? This is kind of crap that annoys me with some of us.
No she did not!! That was not a make over…..she just took her “work clothes” off…….the young lady is only 16 years old……what 16 year you know who would not want to look all “glam up” doing the talk show circuit?
My thoughts exactly. Now she gota wear a ponytail for life bc dummies critcized her, JUST to prove some point? Naw, that would be dumb too
Could not have said it better!
This is not a make over. She got her hair styled for an event! Come on people stop it!
Yes and No she works out a lot and probably not able to manage her hair like she should. She deserves it so she can look fly spending her millions.
She didn’t get a makeover, her hair is just down. The ponytail was obviously needed during the competition, not while she is making appearances.
So now we can’t get our hair done without being scrutinized too? FOH
no. she was fine as she was.
Can’t believe her hair is still an issue with some people, can we talk about sonething now?
She is still natural. Look at the roots, he just straightened it out and add some extentions for fullness(it looks that way too me). She is only 16 so what did you all expect her to do? This is what society does to people that don’t fit their bill. All I will say to Ms. Douglas is be you, do you, and stay true to what you believe. When you look back, don’t worry about what people think but take comfort in knowing you did everything exactly as you wanted. I am preferable to the ponytail though. It set her apart from the others.
@ Shekera: Preach!
Her hair WAS a hot damn mess….I agree with Anita & Marcia!!! Let’s just be honest ppl…if someone had just uploaded a pic of her snapped on the bus or the streets ppl would have LET HER HAVE IT!!! In the grand scheme of things and all that she had/has going on in her life I am sure that she didn’t and shouldn’t have gave a damn!!!!
stfu – she wasnt on the streets – she was in london getting gold medals – im pretty sure if she was on the streets her hair would have been done – gtfoh
I go out in the streets with my hair pulled back in a bun all the time. I’m running errands and grocery shopping. I’m not posing for a fashion spread.
@ Tina Marie Harrison: Nothing was wrong with Gabby’s hair. Just because you have been brainwashed to believe that only hair permed in the style of Europeans is "done" doesn’t mean that it’s true.
Gabby has every RIGHT to wear her hair the way she chooses. Folks/Media have to realize she was in routine;therefore, it was expected of her to wear her ‘signature’ ponytail while competing. What’s the problem NOW? Nothing at all, Gabby looks amazing EITHER way! Folks stay worried about her while she continues to go about her business. JMHO #TEAMGABBY
As a stylist myself her new look is just as well fine with her old look that she had during her competitions….it really doesn’t matter she’s 90 million dollars richer more than whoever doesn’t like it. So, the next time you eat a bowl of cornflakes with her face on the box take a look at yourself and see who’s prettier if them ALL.
OMG she let her hair down! Please find something else to write about. How dare she wear make up and switch her hair from UP to DOWN! Oh please, give me a break.
What is this fascination with hair! I can’t!
I was ever so disgusted reading those comments people were making about her hair at the Olympics. In her 16 years she’s accomplished what they could never GENERATIONS deep!
I saw her look on America’s Got Talent and admittedly was disappointed. Yes, she wears her hair down when not competing. My disappointment was with the extentions/weaves, whatever it is. It’s her hair and she’s beautiful no matter what, so my issue is not with the added hair in general, but the fear that this talented young lady succumed to peer pressure. I hope she did it because she WANTED to, not because she felt she HAD to to appease a few narrow-minded and shallow individuals.
I’m natural and have been for years. I remember meeting this guy when I was wearing my hair straightened and down my back. Imagine his surprised when I went out with him with my two strand twists. Should’ve seen the look on this fool’s face.
That didn’t last long lol. He never did admit it, but I knew what his problem was.
Really??? Cut out this nonsense and why must we continue to entertain this! Gabby do you!
and it still won’t matter..people will still have something to say
RIGHT!
Gabby could never perform with her hair hanging down her back. If those who spoke about her hair had common sense they would know this too. Also if you noticed all gymnastic members wore their hair up in some fashion not to enterfear with their performance.
I think people need to get the entire fuck over her hair.
I personally don’t see the point. Most photos I’ve seen of her, her hair is relaxed and she looks comfortable in her own skin. She didn’t need the makeover. She looks uncomfortable, but if that’s what she wanted then so be it.
That’s a beautiful child, I think some people are forgetting that their talking about a child. The "white media" played a huge part in this bs. Yes, there were some people who were saying negative things about her appearance but come on majority of people were praising this child. The white media took the ignorant comments of a couple and blew that shit all out of proportion. They made it the top story for days. They were more than happy to shine the light on us ignorant black folks tearing down their "own" as opposed to just shining the light on her accomplishments. They didn’t want this child to win, Weiber was the favorite and they were devastated when she didn’t make it. Gabby’s ass wasn’t supposed to be there. This was an attempt to take the spotlight off her making history. They’ve been trying to erase us from history for eons. The white media has had a field day talking about Gabby and her mother. Terrible, people don’t believe the hype.
Wow…y’all still stuck on the baby’s hair fa real she’s 16 and an athlete…u can’t win the Gold worrying about hair. Really though how insulting rude can people get she’s just a kid damn
Who are we really? Who do we identify with? Why in 2012 are we so inferior when it comes to our HAIR! Wake the hell up!!!
This is a DUMB article… WHY? because if you look at her hair while in competition you can see YOUR interpretation of her makeover is really how she wears her hair when NOT competing.. There was NO make over, LOL black women get their hair done every week, every 2 weeks, and every month and they do change their hair styles… which is NORMAL!
Absolutely NOT
She can’t compete with her hair down, now that the competition is over she can wear her hair how she like. Case fucking closed. Move on please.
Wait the pic with Sharon Osbourne!!!!! How is she toweringg over that woman? lol Sharon must be tintyyyyy!
Some shit should not.be posted and this is shit. Come on now the fuck up and stop.
She was in competition so of course her hair was gelled back in a pony tail. People can be so basic sometimes. Can bloggers stop perpetuating this?
I dont know, I’m kinda torn…..i feel like on one hand…aint no way in hell Ima get on INTERNATIONAL TELEVISION with my my shit looking a hot ass ratchet mess….but that shouldn’t have overshadowed her winning the gold medal! I’m glad its fixed now…mama looks good! Its a shame how your looks over outweighs your talent, but the truth of the matter is….her shit did look a fool! yes it SHOULDN’T matter, but its still the truth. good luck to her though, she’s accomplished what most wont ever do in a lifetime…and she;s only 16! now THATS amazing!
I agree with the first person on this post. No disrespect, but I didn’t bother to read anyone else’s post. Some might have agreed with said person as well, or said something similar.
Nevertheless, why is this a topic at all? The reason this beautiful, talented, accomplished young lady had her hair pinned up was obvious: she was in competition. Who cares about his/her hair when in competition? Why is this rocket science to some, perhaps many?
What degenerate had the audacity to sit at home, doing nothing compared to what this young lady was doing, and/or about to do, and criticize how her hair looked? Some people are assiduous at being stupid. Meaning: they practice being stupid.
Furthermore, I agree with the first post when it was stated that Gabby is no longer in competition; so it makes all the sense in the world for her to make herself look even more beautiful than she naturally is; especially since she has a television appearance to do.
To even remotely suggest that Gabby, or her camp, caved under the pressure is nothing short of irresponsible; and the aforementioned is me being nice about it.
only miggers atleast she has hair…….
If we stop highlighting the issue by talking about it and creating posts about it, it goes away. Simple as that. Let this girl live her life.
this is not a makeover for her, nothing was wrong with her ponytail, she wore the ponytail to be comfortable while competing and nothing was wrong with it. she got her hair washed and flat ironed for her public appearances and we all do it, nothing new here…ok NEXT!!!!
I thought it was shameful and embarrassing also that black women with SMALL minds were so concerned about Gabby’s edges as she flipped her way to the Gold. Everywhere I went I heard some scatter brain weave queen commenting about her hair, but just like Gabby I shook my head and ignored it thinking how the hell have we become so shallow and fake as a society? No wonder we are failing as a people and passing these sick thinking ideals down to the youth who are displaying these thoughts and behaviors just like their twisted parents and then we wonder why.
What was she supposed to do show up with an updo so it can fall apart and couldn’t see where she was going. Nothing was wrong then or now. Celebrate this young lady’s accomplishments I bet half of the talkers couldn’t do half of what she’s done that night alone.
I love her new hair. But isnt this what it always looked like? It was just up in a ponytail all that time. Of course she would get her hair done for TV appearances. Everyone does.
There was nothing wrong with her hair in the first place. I find it interesting that the ones who initiated the negative comments appeared to be teenagers on Twitter.
You always hear people talking about how progressive this younger generation under the age of 21 is, i.e. How they don’t see color and aren’t burdened by the same issues/hang ups that future generations were burdened with. This situation proved that to be a lie. The younger generation is just as screwed up as previous generations.
Her hair was fine during the Olympics; and I would hardly call what she got from Ted Gibson a makeover because while her hair does look trimmed, conditioned and curled she’s still rockin’ her long hair parted in the middle.
@ALM Nawh. …. The ball and chains of slavery are still firmly in place on the minds of people of color. You see the standards by which we measure and hold up each other has not altered much since Jim crow. We are hung up on skin brightness, hair texture, and European facial features. Anything that hints of African tribal inheritance is seen as ugly. When they saw that gabby edges had snapped back to their original origin she might as well had a bone in her nose!!
What would have been more like it if she had worn her natural hair and kicked ass to the GOLD that would have really made a statement and we can have an intelligent conversation about our HAIR. But atlas we are more comfortable with sewing other nationalities hair to our heads and then use that to measure our beauty. How sad is that.
HAPPY BLACK FOLKS…YOU ALL HAVE JUST CAUSED ANOTHER YOUNG SISTER TO STRAIGHTEN HER HAIR TO LOOK LIKE THE WHITE RACE…HAPPY PAPPY!
Another example how we as black women tear each other down, when we have a "young, black teen" that has done amazing things, and like all the "sane" people say was she suppose to wear a long ass lacefront or some shit YOU HATERS would have talked about that too, but all you haters SHE CAN AFFORD TO TAKE CARE OF ALL YOU HATING AZZ PEOPLE" (in my kandi buress voice)
Spell her name right lard ass! It’s Douglas you stay hating on your on people
Shake my head. The Slave mentality. This Young Lady won Gold Metals and people are talking about her hair. I mean she had her hair in a ponytail just like any other athlete. I mean is she suppose to do back flips and twirls in a lacefront wig on.
