Details about Tyler Perry’s latest lawsuit under the cut…
According to the suit, James says the plot of both films center on the story of a married couple where the wife is tempted by another man, and the affair subsequently destroys the marriage
While that seems like a pretty generic plot that’s been done many times before (go peep Unfaithful, Legends of the Fall or The English Patient), James’ says Tyler got the idea from HIM.
To further substantiate his claims, James states in the lawsuit that he passed the script to an “associate” of Oprah Winfrey’s in the hopes that it would be one day passed along to Perry.
James seeks monetary damages and also wants the opening and closing credits changed to include the words: “Based on the novel ‘Lovers Kill’ by William James.” (source)
No word yet from Perry or Lionsgate, the movie’s distributor, who’s also named in the suit.
