Oprah Should Be So Proud Of Georgia…

Disclaimer:? The photo above was taken without my consent (or knowledge at the time) and although I embrace the photo as evidence of my wrongdoing, I have since changed my ways and wouldn’t DARE text, talk, or drive while on the phone. I totally respect Oprah’s “No Phone Zone” pledge, and while I haven’t personally signed my name to it, I will adhere to the laws in the state in which I call home.

Now that I’ve got that out the way, Georgian’s take note. As of yesterday (July 1st) it is against the law to text while driving in our state and if you are still a teen you have even stricter requirements.

Georgia drivers caught checking e-mail, sending text messages or using the Internet while behind the wheel could face a $150 fine and get a point added to their driver’s license. The law is one of several that took effect on July 1. Teen drivers will also be barred from talking while driving.

Georgia State Patrol troopers will wait until Aug. 1st to strictly enforce the new texting while driving ban. Commanding Officer of the Georgia State Patrol Major Mark McDonough said the department’s efforts are going to be “very compassionate” over the next few weeks while troopers and drivers get used to laws banning texting while driving for adults and texting and talking for drivers under 18 and the new seat belt requirement for pickup truck drivers.

McDonough says the exception will be for drivers involved in accidents resulting from texting or from pickup truck drivers not wearing seat belts.
