The music world was shaken after the popular singer’s untimely demise in a plane crash in August 2001. Dash, who was dating the superstar at the time of her death, says that he could have saved her, stating:

There’s no chance that if I was there, we would’ve been on the plane.

It would have never happened that way. Aaliyah and I was in Miami. She was shooting a video in Miami and I was in Miami with State Property. She was gonna do a record with Freeway.

On August 25, 2001, Aaliyah and several employees of Virgin Records boarded a twin-engine Cessna 402B at the Marsh Harbour Airport on the Abaco Islands, Bahamas after completing her work for the “Rock the Boat” music video.

The light aircraft, piloted by Luis Morales III, crashed shortly after takeoff, killing Aaliyah and the other passengers instantly. Later, the pilot’s autopsy revealed he had traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system.

In his recent interview with The Real, the Rap mogul explains how Hype Williams wanted to move the “Rock The Boat’ video shoot to the Bahamas and he had to go back to New York to take care of his kids. As he parted ways with Aaliyah, Dash says they both felt uneasy about the trip.

“She was like, ‘Yo, I don’t like that plane,'” Dash says.

“I was like, ‘Don’t get on it.’ She was like, ‘I gotta do it.’ It was a complicated situation, but she had to go do that video. If I was there, I woulda made sure that that jet that was supposed to be for her, the G4, she woulda been on that. I wouldn’t have got on that plane. So it probably would’ve been different, but everything happens for a reason.

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. You just gotta deal with the cards that life deals you.”

It had to be hard for Dame Dash to recover from losing the love of his life so drastically. Judging from this interview, it seems he played their last minutes over and over in his head thinking about how he could have done differently. It’s such a sad love story…
