A security firm has discovered an evil phone app out there that secretly snaps photos of the phone’s user using their phone’s front facing camera.
But wait!! As if that wasn’t enough, the app also uses the image it captured to strong arm the phone’s owner into sending payment or be ‘outed’!

Security firm Zscaler was first to spot the app, which presents itself as a normal video playing app, albeit for playing videos of an adult nature.
“During the course of our daily malware hunt, we came across a new mobile ransomware variant which leverages pornography to lure victims into downloading and installing it,” claimed the firm.
The ransom screen stays persistent even at reboot. It does not allow the user to operate the device and keeps the screen active with ransom messages, Zscaler said. (source)
For the record, the ‘Adult Player’ is one that has to be installed manually by the phone’s user (it isn’t available on ‘Google Play’), checking the box in settings to allow their phones to run apps from non-trusted sources.
That being said, there?s no need to be too nervous about?downloading new apps to your phone if it’s actually listed in the app store. ?Also, most apps have to get explicit permission prior to using your camera and/or microphone, so choose wisely!
To avoid being the victim of such evilware, the security firm advises Android phone users?to download apps only from trusted app stores, such as Google Play.
