It’s been a long first season for VH1’s latest reality show, Sorority Sisters and they’ve only aired about 4 episodes.

Now word on the curb is that Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has officially suspended two of it’s members for participating in VH1’s latest ratchet reality show.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc members April McRae and Rwanda “Joy” Hammond have been officially suspended from the Black Greek organization.
Notice of the suspension was posted on the sorority?s corporate website and news hit social media almost instantaniously.
Several members of Black Greek organizations who’d organized the #boycottsororitysisters protests were ecstatic over news of the suspensions. Roland Martin sent out the following, stating:
I guess it’s a some sort of victory to have two members suspended, but does it really mean anything?
As my friend Funky Dineva (who happens to be an Alpha just like Roland Martin), so eloquently states:
The question that needs to be asked is do these women care enough about the suspensions to not participate in a season 2 if a season 2 is granted? My guess is probably not. For those of us that pledged, we all know that you don?t stop being an AKA because you?ve got a red dot next to your name on the national roster.
Additionally, a suspension does not prohibit you from reaping the social benefits of being in a fraternity or sorority. All a suspension does is prohibit you from participating in official organization sanctioned events and attending chapter meetings.News flash, MOST Greeks don?t do any of this anyway. Though it?s jacked up that this happened to April and Rwanda, the net effect of this action to their lives is probably ZERO.
I totally agree with his assessment.
And while I understand the whole ‘we’ve gotta protect our brand’ mantra, I think that in the end, these ladies pledged and that can never be taken away from them.
