Welp… the ‘highly anticipated’ Aaliyah biopic was a total fail… at least in the eyes of the twitterverse!
‘Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B’ aired last night (November 15, 2014) on LifetimeTV and the television network’s treatment of the life & times of Aaliyah Haughton was not exactly as bad as they say, but it was bad enough to be totally hilarious.
The film was terribly cast, horribly written and being that Aaliyah’s family was dead set against it (click HERE if you missed that), there was no Aaliyah music anywhere in the flick.
Lifetime also tiptoed around Aaliyah’s scandelous relationship with R. Kelly, to whom she married when she was 15 (he was 27), treating it as a love story gone awry. One scene even included a heart-to-heart between the pair where Aaliyah (played by Alexandra Shipp) states, “Eighteen feels like an eternity from now.” *sigh*

For the record, there was no one in the film that even slightly resembled any of the famous parties prompting social media to have a field day with?hashtags like #LifetimeBiopics and #LifetimeBeLike.
Several memes were created which hilariously poked fun at Lifetime’s horrible casting choices…
Elise Neal as Gladys Knight? Child please! And don’t even get me started on the casting choices for R. Kelly, Dame Dash, Missy & Timbaland….
Timbaland was played by Izaak Smith and Missy Elliott was portrayed by Chattrisse Dolabaille…. and neither of the actors even slightly resembled the musical legends.
Timbaland posted his thoughts about the film via social media and called it ‘disrespectful’ to Aaliyah’s legacy.

And with no Aaliyah music cleared, the musical aspect of the biopic was absolutely horrenduous!
Lifetime didn’t license any of Aaliyah’s music, but it did use some of the covers she did like the Isley Brothers’ “At Your Best (You Are Love)” and Marvin Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up.”
I don’t know if you noticed, but in the scene where Aaliyah performed the Marvin Gaye cover on a talk show, the music seemed to speed up during the middle of her performance…. then it slowed down again. ?It was really weird.
And last but not least, talk show host Wendy Williams got blasted online for her involvement in the film.
Williams apparently executive produced the film and promoted it via her twitter. ?Her involvement prompting even more memes…
