Nev Schulman and Max Joseph return with Season 2 of MTV’s ‘Catfish,’ which premiered last night (June 25, 2013).
The term ‘catfish’ refers to a person who pretends to be someone they’re not by utilizing social media (i.e. Facebook, Twitter etc.) to create false online identities. The action is used primarily to pursue deceptive online romances.
[Sidebar: As to why anyone is getting ‘catfished’ these days remains a mystery, but apparently there are still a few lost souls seeking love online who will believe anything a stranger they’ve never met tells them.]
The popular show kicked off the 2nd season with Cassie, (real name: Cassandra Brigette Cherry).??
Nev and Max head to Hollywood, FL to assist the young woman, who’d been (insert air-quotes) ‘dating’ and Atlanta man by the name of “Steven” for well over two years.? She’d never seen him in person, but had spoken to him on the phone often.
Cassie and ‘Steven’ were even (insert air quotes again) “engaged” to be married, but again… they had never met or even video chatted.
Gladys, Cassie’s BFF (picture above on the right) is even featured in the episode, as she explains to Nev that she’s happy Cassie found love online, because now she’s gotten her friend back.
But wait… we soon find out that it was Gladys who was ‘catfishing’ Cassie all along. 😯

Gladys claims she only did it because Cassie was on a downward spiral after her father was killed.? Cassie had been hanging with a wild crowed and was participating in promiscuous activity, so Glady’s created “Steven” online so that Cassie could have someone stable to love. ? She even enlisted the help of her cousin, Tony, who spoke to Cassie on the phone as “Steven”.? *sigh*
Way too much…
For the record, Cassie hit the tweets earlier today to take up for her BFF, stating:
Could you forgive & forget?
