Lisa Raye and Stacey Dash take on prime time in a new VH1 series entitled, “Single Ladies”. The series premiered Monday night with a 2-hour episode.
Executive-produced by Queen Latifah, the show is a scripted ?romantic comedy series? taped and set in Atlanta and features a ton of A-Town locations and cameos including Jermaine Dupri, Rozonda “Chill” Thomas, Cam’Ron, Eve, Lauryn London and more.
It’s premise is “the life of an Atlanta single lady” and while it is quite entertaining, there are mixed reviews on how it portrays single life in our city.
“Single Ladies” recap with photos PLUS full video of the 2 hour season premiere below:
Val Stokes (Stacey Dash):
After Val tells her boyfriend of five years, ?If you like it, then put a ring on it. If not, let?s stop wasting each other?s time,? he chooses the latter and leaves her, in front of all her friends who have gathered to celebrate the opening of her new clothing store.
Further complicating Val?s life is the fact that three short months later, Quinn is already engaged to a new woman named Shelly (Lauryn London).
Val takes a risk and breaks her 90-day rule by having sex with some random white guy she just met.
Val invites her ex over to her place for closure, but what she ends up getting was hurt when he tells her he never loved her.
His confession turns into orgasmic bliss, because *Phaedra Parks voice* Everybody knows that when someone tells you they never loved you, you give ’em some. [insert side-eye]
A pregnancy scare aka a Maury moment gives Val a bit of clarity when she finds that her new conquest isn’t the man she thought and realizes her ex did her a favor by dumping her.
Keisha Greene (Lisa Raye):
Keisha is an aging video vixen whose uses sex as weapon. She has no problem screwing younger men but has her eyes set on a wealthy jeweler who is just as much of a control freak as she is.
Her arch enemy is Jasmine (aka Kim Porter aka Diddy’s baby mama #2), another former video girl who found God, and then God told her to write a tell-all book.
The plot thickens when Keisha finds out the watch she stole actually belongs to her wealthy love interest. *sigh*
April Goldberg-Jenkins aka token white chick (Charity Shea.):
April is could be described as the “Kim Zolciak” of the group. But wait…. she’s actually married so I take that back.
April has a “good Black man” who loves her but reveals she is cheating on him with another “good Black man” who happens to be the Mayor of Atlanta (played by Common).
Unfortunately for April, it turns out the Mayor has been sleeping with more than one sexy white chick as the ladies find out from photo revealed on twitter. *snicker*
So the cheater becomes the cheated and things come full circle.
April seems ready to move past her indiscretions and make things work with the “good Black man” she has at home.
The episode ends with the 3 ladies having drinks and April (token white chick) proclaiming, ?It feels good to be drama-free.?
Good luck with that…
Have you watched the episode? New shows air on VH1 Mondays at 9/8c.
I posed the following question on StraightFromTheA’s Facebook page yesterday:
When Sex and the City aired just about everyone I know could relate to one or more characters…. same with Girlfriends (dubbed the “Black” SATC).
QUESTION: Do you see yourselves in any of the characters in “Single Ladies”? If so… which one and why?
So which “Single Lady” (if any) do YOU relate to on VH1’s New “Single Ladies” Show?
