Freaknik Died in the 90’s… Get Over it Already!

Question… Why are y’all still holding on to Freaknik? If you weren’t here in the 90’s, you missed it…sorry!

It’s gone forever, so please stop trying to bring it back!

It’s that time of year. Spring break is upon is and the same two promoters who fought it out last year are at it again. Being that last year was a complete FLOP, I’m still at a loss as to why these two are still trying… but who am I?

Killer Mike even tried to explain it to y’all years ago, but you just wouldn’t listen…

I swear if I get one mo’ email talmbout the “official” Freaknic (with a c) vs. Freaknik (with a k) umma SCREAM!!

I bet those idiots weren’t even here for the original.? Shoot… I remember when Freaknik was at that park in Decatur and they had to close down I-20.

But I digress…

Freaknik 93

Freaknic Nation, which claims t0 be the official Freaknik celebration and its competitor, iFREAKNiK2011, are each planning competing events for April 15-17, 2011.

The date is fast approaching, however a spokesman with Mayor Kasim Reed’s office said the city has only received one Freaknik-related permit application, for South Bend Park off Lakewood Avenue.

That application is still under review and the deadline for applying is 30 days prior to the event.? So even if others were submitted at this time, “it would be too late,” he said.

As you know, Freaknik is the Atlanta spring break known for it’s raunchy street shows and cruising.

Freaknik hit it’s peak in the mid-1990s, drawing over 200,000 participants to the metro Atlanta area. But by that decade’s end, city officials and residents were fed up with all y’all transplants running around naked and peeing in the streets.

What once was an innocent college picnic, turned into Uncle Luke’s freakfest with strippers and pimps traveling from miles around just to hit the streets of the “A”…. we had to stop it.

Sorry for those of you who missed it, but it’s a wrap!

So if you’re just getting into town and think that “Freaknik” is the thing to do… think again. Get all your friends together and hit the park… create your own Freaknik instead of letting these promoters feed you a dream.

I’m off my soapbox for now. For those of you who want to reminisce about the old days, when Freaknik was a reality moreso than a old wive’s tale, check out the gallery below:
