Cornell Haynes, Jr. aka Nelly discusses his teen years on a recent episode of MTVs “When I Was 17”. Nelly shares days of cutting class, gambling…
“We used to shoot dice in the band room, in the bathroom. If there was a crap game, I was getting out of class to attend that crap game,” he says. “This is how I got money for the new J’s [Jordans] that was coming out; this is how I got my lunch money. This is how I ate.”
Flinging the dice proved to be a lucrative hobby for Nelly, and the “Grillz” rapper knew exactly what he wanted to do with his newfound green.
When Ne-Yo Was 17… he was just as fabulous as he is today!
Ne-yo (born Shaffer C. Smith) was just a regular old teen at a performing arts school. Originally from Arkansas, Ne-Yo grew up in a single parent home Las Vegas, Nevada.
His mother moved the family to Vegas after she and his dad spit up and while he was growing up, it was there he discovered his love for and interest in music. Ne-Yo began writing songs at an early age but he also had a passion for doodling:
“I went to a performing-arts high school. I wasn’t even there for music….I was there for visual design and drawing and painting and stuff like that.”
