Some flashback footage of Jermaine Dupri has been circulating the net showing the mogul way before he was famous. JD rocks a highlighted gumby while his mom, Cecelia Mauldin speaks about her rapper/producer son and his talents. In the video, JD (circa 1986) gives a bit of advice to up and coming producers by telling them that it’s a must to have the right people behind them and to never give up. It’s so refreshing to see how hard work and passion pays off.
Fast forward 13 years and you’ve got Jermaine (circa 2009) joined by his Ocean’s 7 crew which includes Trey Songz and Nelly. Nelly did a bit of a flashback himself to Country Grammar, as he reprises his singing chops on the chorus of the new joint.

D’Angelo used to be the sh*t…personified. Especially after his 1995 video sensation “How Does It Feel” hit the airwaves showcasing those thug corn rows, his sexy brown skin, those washboard abs…. *sigh* yes…he did the dayum thing! Jame Foxx even spoofed the video on his show back in the day:
Now, I don’t know about you, but there has never been another video that celebrated the Black male form moreso than D’Angelo’s. That being said, years later (2005 to be exact) this arrest photo totally ruined the lives of all us who were salivating over D’Angelo, aka Michael Eugene Archer’s, tight form. The singer was arrested and plead no contest to a felony cocaine-possession charge. A week later he suffered a nasty car wreck—his Hummer ran off the road and flipped, and he was taken to the hospital in a helicopter. In 2006, Gary Harris, the record executive who first signed him, carted him off to rehab and in 2008, Virgin Records released a greatest-hits album. In lieu of all the drama, D’Angelo has appeared as a guest musician here and there, but D’Angelo (circa 1995), the groundbreaking musician, has been all but absent from the scene.
Wonder what he’s been doing now? Check out an update below: (more…)
“If it were not for Michael Jackson I would not be where or who I am today. His music and legacy will live on forever. Prayers to the family.” ~ Ludacris via Twitter
“This loss has deeply saddened me, with a heavy heart I composed this statement. May God cover you Michael. We all lift your name up in prayer. I pray for the entire JACKSON family particularly Michael’s mother and all his fans that loved him so much. I would not be the artist, performer, and philanthropist I am today without the influence of Michael. I have great admiration and respect for Him and I’m so thankful I had the opportunity to meet and perform with such a great entertainer In so many ways he transcended culture. He broke barriers, he changed radio formats! With music, he made it possible for people like Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama to impact the mainstream world. His legacy is unparalleled Michael Jackson will never be forgotten.” ~ Usher via Twitter
It’s no secret where Usher found the inspiration for his signature moves. Check out a flashback video of he and Mike in an onstage dance battle below with a funny surprise guest: (more…)
Today’s flashback video piggy backs on my last post “An Ode to Eddie’s Gold”. Check out Nelly’s Grillz produced by Jermaine Dupri and featuring Paul All, Ali & Big Gipp. Don’t act like y’all weren’t singing this ish just a few short years ago! I know I was….and I HATE grills. Anyway, I think it’s about time for a “Porcelain Grillz” remix cause dayum near everybody in the video has remixed their mouths. Somebody call JD….and tell ‘em to get on that.
I haven’t forgotten that it’s Friday. Not me! I’m just a bit slow this morning. Anyway, add this video to your flashback collection. It’s the Dungeon Family’s “Trans DF Express” and features Outkast, Goodie Mob, Sleepy Brown, Rico Wade, Slim Cutta Calhoun, C-Bone…and whoever else you can pick out. You’ll probably see one or all at Greenbriar this weekend anyway but I’m still mad I missed their Vibe photoshoot/barbeque at Piedmont Park the other day.
