Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first Black president and an enduring icon of the struggle against racial oppression, died Thursday December 5, 2013 at the age of 95.
Mandela spent 27 years in prison after being convicted of treason by South Africa’s white minority government, only to forge a peaceful end to White rule by negotiating with his captors after his release in 1990.
He led the African National Congress, long a banned liberation movement, to a resounding electoral victory in 1994, the first fully democratic election in the country’s history.
Mr. Mandela served just one term as South Africa’s president and had not been seen in public since 2010, when the nation hosted the soccer World Cup. Continue Reading…

Obama was forced to pause three separate times and talk over the protester, interrupting the flow of the closing section of the speech at National Defense University.
“I’m about to address it ma’am, but you’ve got to let me speak,” Obama scolded the woman. “Why don’t you sit down and let me tell you exactly what I’d do.”
“Ma’am, let me finish. Let me finish ma’am,” said Obama. “This is part of free speech is you being able to speak but also you listening?
And me being able to speak. All right?”

It’s official. President Barack Obama
is now a ‘Morehouse man’!
The POTUS addressed Morehouse College’s commencement ceremony and was and was also bestowed an honorary degree to the historic college during the midst of a torrential thunderstorm earlier this morning in Atlanta (May 19, 2013).
Family members shielded themselves with plastic and there were a lot a drenched graduates but Obama got big laughs during his speech.
In recognizing the obvious, Obama said he would join the graduates in the rain if he could, but jokingly said that first lady Michelle Obama would not.
Politics was largely absent during the president’s address, although he made reference to his controversial national health care law while urging graduates who will be going on to medical school to serve the needy.
He also urged graduates to think of more than their careers and advised them to be good role models and inspire others, particularly members of the African-American community who need a helping hand.
“Members of the class of 2013, you are the heirs to a great legacy,” he said. “You have within you the same courage; the same strength; the same resolve as the men who came before you.
President Obama’s commencement speech at Morehouse marked the first time a sitting president has delivered a commencement address in Georgia since 1938, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke at the University of Georgia.
