Peter Thomas of The Real Housewives of Atlanta found himself smack dab in the middle of a heated colorism debate a few days ago.
Thomas, a native of Jamaica, is clearly darker than dark, but one of his Instagram posts triggered accusations of colorism stemming from a comment made by his son’s mother, Nancy Fernandez.
Fernandez was heard telling their child that he isn’t Black and the comment didn’t fare too well online. Needless to say, I personally spoke to Peter about the situation and he has a whole lot to say about it.
Details + my EXCLUSIVE interview with Peter Thomas below…
In the clip above, Fernandez, who is of Dominican descent, can be heard stressing to their young son that he’s “not Black,” but “brown,” after he, himself, says he is Black.
The son then reiterates that his father is the “color of a newly paved street,” so he in fact, is Black as well.
BET wrote a scathing article about the video which also prompted further debate about the situation, adding:
Fernandez’s ignorance and disgusting views on colorism may have rubbed off on their kid as he added, “My dad is the color of a newly paved street.” They both proceeded to laugh at the ignorant comment.
Peter clapped back at BET with the following response:
I personally spoke with Peter Thomas in the video below after noticing that he was being dragged about his child’s mother’s comments about the color of their son’s skin.
During our discussion, Peter subsequently admitted that colorism is an issue in America but he wanted to ensure that his son’s mother did not bear that kind of attitude.
For the record, I also threw in some questions about the recent KKKim Zolciak scandal and Peter states that during his experiences with Kim she “said a lot of things that made him uncomfortable” but he doesn’t feel she’s racist.
We also went a bit more in depth with the colorism debate after the interview and took a few calls from viewers.
