I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.

Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people will get to the promised land.

My husband was a man who hoped to be a Baptist preacher to a large, Southern, urban congregation. Instead, by the time he died in 1968, he had led millions of people into shattering forever the Southern system of segregation of the races. ~ Coretta Scott King (1927-2006)

Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. And so we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom. A man can’t ride you unless your back is bent.

Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.
Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable… Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.
I submit that an individual who breaks the law that conscience tells him is unjust and willingly accepts the penalty by staying in jail to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the very highest respect for law.
It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me, and I think that’s pretty important.
He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.
From every mountainside, let freedom ring. When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, ‘Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!
The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was: “If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?” But… the good Samaritan reversed the question: “If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?”
Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him.
I submit to you that if a man hasn’t discovered something that he will die for, he isn’t fit to live.
That old law about ‘an eye for an eye’ leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.
If physical death is the price that I must pay to free my white brothers and sisters from a permanent death of the spirit, then nothing can be more redemptive.

Are things different today or do we still have a ways to go?

This is beautiful Michelle
What a wonderful person!!!!!!!! Thank you Mr. King for paving the way. We still have work to do for justice and equality.
Happy would be birthday MLK.
Speechless.
The greatest article I’ve seen on here. This is the best way I could have started out the day thx atlien
Are things different today or do we still have a ways to go? Racism is alive and well but I think we have gone backwards as a people. If you look at photos from the 60’s people had pride in their appearance when they left the home. Now we have billboards in the City of Atlanta telling people to pull their pants up and finning individuals for their appearance. I have seen signs in restaurants that refuse service to people in NC because other customers do not want to see your entire ass. In the 60’s some people were ignorant because education was denied to them and that was reflected in their speech. Now education is for everyone and we have the means to teach ourselves anything we like through the internet, and some people think it is cool sound like an idiot. Saying “wodi” or “ya feel me” after every other word is not cute. Men also approached women with more respect instead of strolling up to her and saying “yo ma you need to let me put something in ya” then she turning around looking him up and down, because he “fly and flashy” she interested and entertains that bull ish. Crack broke down family structure and it is very evident in many homes in America. There are plenty of black people who do not fall into these categories, and my statement is not meant for all; but there are way too many who do fall under these categories.
I think you are correct but the problem exists within our own race towards each other…
Also, ignorance is running crazy…

I met Mrs. King 10 years ago when she came to Walmart’s home office. Wonderful, kind, classy women. Will never forget it.
thank you for posting this, this is the first website I have seen featuring Martin Luther King Jr. today. seems like we don’t even celebrate his bday or even remember it anymore. I remember we used to ride with the lights on in remembrance. I hadn’t heard if the parade was still happening. RIP Mr. and Mrs. Martin Luther King Jr.
amazing… enjoy seeing photosi never seen before…
I was a child when Dr. King was assassinated and I remember my grandmother telling me that he was a man of peace and that one day men of peace would prevail. I can remember watching the TV and even though I didn’t completely understand, I got enough to know that he had small children and someone’s daddy had been taken from them. The world has come a long way. It still has a long way to go before everyone sees the human instead of the color of his or her skin. I’m old enough to have seen a lot of the positive change and made positive changes myself. May I always be willing to make corrections in myself first before I criticize the paths of others and may we all seek to understand rather than be understood. And Rise Up!
That was great Michelle. Dr. King was a great man that didn’t let man stop him from doing what our God put him here to do. May he continue to R.I.P. Because of him and others alike, I’m proud to be an African American!!!

Thank you Dr.King! Im praying our people get back to standing together as a people, like we were when God blessed us with you.
Thank you Dr. King.
Michelle this is beautiful! You picked wonderful pictures and quotes… Martin’s dream still lives on…
Michelle, you get mad flowers for this article…
I’ve been in love with the First Black Family of America for as long as I’ve been in the world. Dr. King was killed the year that I was born and his presence has meant more to me than I could ever express.
He is one of the reasons I am always talking about us making fools of ourselves in the media, cause I know he wouldn’t approve of most of the contemporary goings on in regards to our race or the human race for that matter…
