A lot of you who are tossing balloons about how great of movie it was, but has yet provided any particulars on what. was so great about the movie. The movie on so many levels depicted a small fraction of slavery and the rest comedy. I've watched countless slavery films and never have I saw black slaves riding on horse with sunglasses on , etc. I know that the movie is fiction and has done well..Cudos to everyone involved. Roots and Rosewood did not box office sales, yet it depict slavery in a more realistic light than Django.... I do believe that had it not been for him making the movie lighter with box office talent , it would not have produced high sales. Always remember that authenticity produce less than fantasy in hollywood. Why do you think a video with half naked girls sales way more than clothed girls. Hmmm.

I agree with Bean Eaton. It was a good flick. I majored in English when I was in college and have read many slave-oriented history books, novels, etc. I am usually one who is easily offended by movies that represent the slavery era, because it is a sensitive subject that should be well depicted. BUT...Django was enlightening as it turned a very heavy subject into a comedic, yet educational film. The main theme was there: Slaves were mistreated by a bunch of people who were ultimately not as intelligent or strong as they were. Once they figured out how to break free, they did so. That point was present, and well noted. As for Spike Lee, his depictions of the Black woman is often offensive if you ask me. He criticizes Tyler Perry for his art form (turning heavy subjects into comedy while instructing/teaching lessons) and now this. Sit down Spike, or better yet, write a new script. I'd go see yours as well :)

@Tori, I totally agree. Shawty Lo's future show Baby Mamma on Ixygen is one that needs to be protested. It portrays us black females as uneducated fools who will do anything for a man. Now Spike and others need to come together on that one. Lets see how many of them be in an uoroar about that foolishness. I was very upset when I saw that film. A horrible portrayal of black single mothers.

Everyone is focused on the use of the N word in this movie. But I know some do not honestly think that we were addressed by our actual names. Django was an excellent film. My opinion: it did not glorify slavery. It showed the ugly truth behind it. It was a horrible time for our ancestors.
People need to look at the film in other aspects. QT also portrayed southern whites in the movie as being ignorant (or was I the only individual that picked that up). Django and his wife were intelligent and it showed how one man will do anything for the love of his wife. A black man going to the ends of the earth for his love, his wife, his black wife.
This movie was Pre-Civil war so I expected the N word to be used and it was used in the context in regards to that time. Every one who played in the movie did an excellent job. And I'm glad that the role Samuel L Jackson played was in the movie because during that time, you had those slaves who went against their own people for the love of their master. Even today, there are still those types of people.
Spike Lee is entitled to his own opinion, however I think he should have called QT himself and expressed his concerns producer to producer. I'm sure many were upset with Jungle Fever, but that's another story. You can not satisfy everyone.
Django was a damn good movie and I would see it again. A black man, the hero and the last man standing. And as I said before, southern whites should be in an uproar too if we are discussing people being upset at the film because throughout the entire movie, they were portrayed as idiots.

Hurrah for Tarantino! He has everyone everyone fussin' over his flick. There's nothing like notoriety to keep the chickens clucking. While all of you are disputing this movie which some of you have and haven't seen. You fail to see the bigger picture which is slavery was never abolished. It's been expanded. We are modern slaves to infinite systems; the American Dream, IRS, Criminal Justice System, Family Court, jobs, debt, entertainment, ignorance, our own vices, etc. These are the issues that should be argued and fought.

I actually found it thought provoking. There was a reference to a french author Alexander Dumas writer of The Three Musketeers being black. Hollywood milks that story to this day and yet I learn it's origin in a Tarantino flick. Thanks Quent.
