Former NBA players John Salley and Antoine Walker and NFL player turned businessman Damion Gregory sat down on BET’s “Don’t Sleep” hosted by TJ Holmes to discuss athletes who go broke after leaving the game.
In an episode entitled: “GAME OVER: Sports and Money in Black America,” Salley, who entered the NBA at 19, offered sound financial advice for young players entering the league.

Walker, who appeared on ESPN’s 30 for 30: Broke Documentary, recently declared bankruptcy and speaks candidly about the poor financial decisions he made throughout the years.
Coincidentally, former Real Housewife of Atlanta, Sheree Whitfield (ex-wife of retired NFL player Bob Whitfield) joined the panel to talk about finances as well.

It was a great show..Ms Sheree brought insight from a real ballers wife. Unlike many of these so called fake girlfriends..

I know…I didn’t see anything Sheree said or did wrong. Obviously her fame/money came from her being married to a professional athlete…and as we know from watching RHOA. Her finances changed when she went through the divorce. Bob claiming he know longer has the money he made while in the NFL. *side eye* I don’t care what Michelle or anyone is tryin to say…at least Sheree got up and is tryin to make things happen for herself and children.
But, I kind of got the feeling TJ Holmes was tryin to imply…that these women are some how responsible for these guys going broke. Number one, everyone story and lifestyle is different. Some of these guys get married and have five or six other women that they take care of. How is that the wives fault?
The only person responsible for taking care of these guys finances is the athlete. The wife can only suggest and do so much.
Athletes are to blame for why they always go broke after retirement because they blow all of their money on stupid stuff like women, houses, cars. They don’t think about life after the NBA or NFL.

We know it’s money, cars and jewelry that pro-athletes go broke buying. I think Sheree was on the show to speak from the perspective of a gold digger who takes the money.
She stuttered through it but when she said she didn’t know he was broke until they were going through the divorce, it was because he had already hid the money he didn’t want her to know about. Bob only went broke after she took all of his money during their divorce and appealed to get more. TJ knew what he was doing when he asked her to do the show.
And John Salley wanted so bad to rip her a new one! He could hardly contain himself. I got my life when TJ called him out for his "facial expressions"!
Well…Sheree should not have been that chick…reppin the Gold Digger…I think her marriage was real to her. @atlien this was another great post by you. I would strongly suggest you research this topic of "ATHLETES WHO WERE ONCE RICH, BUT NOW THEY’RE ALMOST POOR" and post more of these stories here. Because if nothing else, this "TOPIC" does keep people talking a lot more than ever.
Damn another post that is "reaching"…No shade was thrown at Sheree whatsoever…Damn most of yall were glued to this episode in the hopes of picking up the slightest thing that could make Sheree look bad…It’s really sad…People all always quick to remark about someone else and don’t even have their lives straight…Go Sheree! I’m not a fan of Sheree, but I think she did a good job of reflecting the arrows aimed her way. The reason why she was asked to be on that show was to villainize the "Golddigger". It’s clear the reasons why a lot of these players loose their money are due to a lack of money managment skills and bad investments with all their different family and friends. They need to learn how to say NO!
Bottomline people that aren’t used to money (especially millions) don’t know how to manage it; or even have the foresight to hire a finance person. And even if people give them money advice; most people don’t listen. Like Oprah, and Bill Cosby have said….sign all the checks. In other words know where your money is going. For the record; over half of lottery winners also end up broke

Damion Gregory made it out alive because he was humbled by the fact that he didn’t make as much as the top tier players. He didn’t wine or cry. He just used the opportunity to do good later. For that he is a good man. Money doesn’t change you; it brings out the real you. It blinds you from seeing 5 minutes past your own hand. A wise woman, who paid off 30,000 dollars in debt, once said "Don’t try to keep up with the Jones because the Jones are broke!"
