A man suspected of shoplifting from a Lithonia, Georgia Walmart died yesterday after an altercation with two store employees and a contract security guard.
Authorities are currently investigating the situation, in which the alleged shoplifter was confronted after being accused of pocketing two DVD players from the Atlanta area discount store.
No for real tho… TWO DVD PLAYERS? Not a million dollar bank robbery… TWO DAYUM DVD PLAYERS!
Details below…
According to news reports, the man (whose identity hasn’t been released) exited through the front door of the store around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning and was confronted in the parking lot.
When DeKalb County police officers arrived at the scene, they found the employees on top of the suspected shoplifter, a middle-aged man.
According to the police report obtained by WSB-TV, when an officer attempted to handcuff the suspect, there was no resistance. At that point, the officer noticed the suspect was bleeding from the nose and mouth.
The suspected shoplifter was transported to DeKalb Medical-Hillandale Hospital, where he was soon pronounced dead.
Channel 2′s Amanda Cook received the following statement from Walmart spokeswoman Dianna Gee:
“This is truly a sad situation. We don’t know all of the facts right now. We’re in the process of working with law enforcement to determine all of the facts and cooperating and providing any information we have to assist in the investigation,” Gee said.
“The two associates involved in the incident are currently suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation. The security officer involved will no longer be providing services to us,” she said.
“Our associates are trained that the safety of our customers and our associates is our first priority. No amount of merchandise is worth someone’s life. Associates are trained to disengage from situations that would put themselves or others at risk,” added Gee. “That being said, this is still an active investigation and we’re working with police to provide any assistance.”
Gee continued, saying officials are in the process of conducting a full internal review, and if it’s determined that Walmart policy was not followed, officials will take the “appropriate action at the appropriate time.”
Wow! This situation is upsetting for all involved. First a man is DEAD over a few DVD players and secondly there are a few employees that could possible face murder charges in the near future.
Was it really THAT serious?

These WANNBE RENT-A-COPS are gettin REAL RECKLESS, give a power hungry man a WHISTLE & FLASHLIGHT & they think they’re "TOP FLIGHT SECURITY OF THE WORLD!" Now if the shoplifter turns out to be a young black kid there’s gonna be some TROUBLLLE…TROUBLLLE! I bet sum1 got the whole thing recorded on their fone smh!
**The sad thing is, I bet them DVD players were doorbuster deals on Black Friday and cost like $10…this sound like sumthin NeNe son Bryson would do!
Ha! You are a trip.
@TORI!!! (dead) at that "TOP FLIGHT" and you are so right about security guards, and it’s usually the ones who either didn’t or couldn’t make it in the Police academy, and with the flashlights (I SEE YOU!!!) I don’t understand why they didn’t stop him before he got out the store and going hard for ‘WALLY WORLD" for about 7.50/hr. (child cheese)
EXACTLY!! If I was them emplyees at Wal-Mart I would be VERY cautious cause that man no longer has a job and judging by his reckless & careless behavior it ain’t NUTHIN for him to take sum1 out (Lifetime Movie)…PERMANTELY! I bet he thought FOR SURE he was gonna get the key to the city lol.
They are in the wrong. When I worked in retail, we were told that once someone made it out of the store, you can not approach them. These stores know things will get stolen and have an amount set aside for yearly theft. He shouldn’t have been stealing but I have a feeling Walmart is going to pay for this.
You are so right!!! worked in retail for some 10yrs (management) and that is policy is when they leave the store TO NOT persue them, because they have camera’s in the parking lot, for that, NOW watch they throw those employee’s under the bus (WAL-MART) and I don’t understand why you would go hard like that for someone else’s shit, this is sad, BUT even though he died (rip) Now his family is going to get paid and watch the parties involved face "manslaughter charges" because WAL-MART is going to say "they didn’t follow company policy".
You’re absolutely right. Walmart is not known for being loyal to their employees. Quite the contrary.
God bless all the families involved, especially the victim.
I just watched this on the news. Really not surprised of happened. What he did was wrong bit he didn’t deserve to die. Excessive force was obviously used here.
I totally understand everything that you all are feeling, but as someone who works in the legal system and am a bit tired of the quick judgements and negative comments, I just want to remind the general public to consider all avenues, we do not know if the man was fighting back at first, slipped and hit his head on the ground, or if during a tussle, he hit is head on the ground or the merchandise hidden on his person. Or he could have very well been a victim of excessive force, however, it’s so many factors to be considered. Stop letting the media influence your immediate judgement. The autopsy is the key to an investigation then the charges filed if they fit. IJS dont believe everything that you hear or see on tv, things are not always as it appears.
Some of yall sound like a bunch of ignorant children talking bout Security Guards, give the people credit, at least they have a job and are trying to work towards something. Happy Holidays and do better ppl
It doesn’t matter ESQUIRE DBF…they had no business touching that man AFTER he left out those door! So if they would’ve followed company policy he wouldn’t have had the chance to do any of those things u mentioned! Side note: u must work n the mail room ..
@ Dontbefooled: Are you a member of the Walton family? Don’t worry, your billions are safe.
this is so sad! Overzellous and wanna be heroes.
Dog, this death occurred in Lithonia walmart where I used to live. Man, I wonder what will happen in Ga. next!
GOOD…THAT’S WHAT THAT LIL THIEVING ASS NIGGA GET…TRY STEALING FOOD FOR UR KIDS INSTEAD……
You are making a TON of assumptions. I don’t see a picture of the victim in the news feed, and you are assuming race, etc. based on your comment.
I hope you never do anything wrong in your life.
2 dvd players are not worth killing someone over.
One of the rules in retail is when a shoplifter makes it outside of the store an employee should not pursue, period. Besides these retailers have insurance for such incidents.
This is crazy…
Dana T.
Wal-Mart= the pits of hell, and how do they just casually notice that someone is bleeding from their nose and mouth? The employees probably beat him up….stop lying Wal-Mart!
As a former employee of "Wonderful Wally World"(notice the sarcasm), I know for a fact that you are not supposed to pursue the customer once they exit the building. Since this company treats their employees like shyt on a stick, I’m wondering why in the hell they are even chasing this man past the damn express lane! They should have thought about their paycheck and just turned their damn heads. Yes, he was wrong for stealing, but they were even worse for chasing him.
@Suthernhummingbyrd: Exactly
Rest in peace. Wow
Why were these Wal-Mart employees trying to be heroes? Mark my words their asses are all going to jail for manslaughter!! Was your Walmart job really worth it?! I DOUBT it… R.i.p
So sad now his family will be rich because they wasn’t to touch him…
The guy should have not been stealing…I am going to wait for the video. Those employees were doing their job to try to retrieve the merchandise. If they beat him down for it….I agree they went to far…..
Thts truly sad but giving tht I work for one of highest retailers n the world I understand how upset u can get knowing thst someone comes in yr store to steal
