A few years back, Kandi Burruss of The Real Housewives of Atlanta took Atlanta hairstylist Lawrence Washington under her musical wing.
If you recall, the song, entitled “Closet Freak” was featured during Season 3 of the show and the flaming hairstylist “reinvented” himself as “MISS” Lawrence. He even performed the song live during a special event that included all the housewives.

The song was released on iTunes January 29, 2011 and Lawrence recently revealed during that special “hairstylist” episode of RHOA that he was not properly compensated for the song.
Kandi didn’t waste anytime commenting on the situation.
While I’ve heard that Kandi pulled her support of the song after Lawrence refused to sign a contractual agreement for her management services, Lawrence stated on the show that there was actually a “split sheet” in place and that “no split came about.”
Lawrence also stated that he wasn’t a fan of doing business with friends because of his prior dealings with the Grammy award winning songwriter.
Kandi hit the tweets to explain that it was all business and had nothing to do with friendship, stating:

Closet Freak sold no money because:
1. Lawrence is ugly and looks like a bathroom freak instead of a closet freak
2. The song sucked like a 2 dollar ho
3. Nobody wanted to hear a man sing about being another man’s closet freak.
4. It wasn’t properly promoted e.g. no tour like what was done with Kim
and
5. Kandi’s heart probably wasn’t in it. I think she was still hot from her experience with Kim.

I don’t blame Kandi for charging studio time, etc. However, she should have done the same with Kim! She even invited Kim to tour with her, which was not smart, being that Kim had not handed over a dime for Kandi tweaking the song, producing & promoting it. Like NeNe said, Kandi wanted a friend & Kim wanted a hit song…..
I think Kim was a much needed learning experience on how NOT to do business. Kandi painfully exposed the consequences. But there was a plus in that loss. After seeing what Kandi Factory did with Kim’s no note azz,everyone got to see Kandi’s skills.Chic is phenomenal.
But Kandi did Tardy for The Party… FOR FREE. I’m sorry I don’t believe her because in all honesty Kandi can’t keep a story straight and we’ve seen that repeatedly on the show.
Ok, so the song made no money- not unheard of. What bothers me is Kandi decided to use precautions in her dealings with Ms. Lawrence, but went all the way out for Kim. Yes, ITunes helped Kim, but so did Kandi- by tweaking Don’t be Tardy for the Party, producing it, providing studio time for yet another song -”The Ring Didn’t Mean a Thing”, taking her on tour with her. Kandi thought Kim was her buddy, but was sore when Kim consulted with a lawyer who advised her not to pay Kandi for her producer fee, etc. Then to add insult to injury, Kim used the song as the theme to her spin-off show, but changed the word “party” to the word “wedding”.
My question is: Why did Kandi not help Lawrence promote his song?

Kim got paid because she basically stole the royalties, lets keep that real! Kandi should have been the highest paid off that song, she wrote the song, produced it, etc… that was clear when it was bought up on the reunion show. Kim did her wrong with that song! Well, Kandi just confirmed my first thought after reading the title of this article. My first thought was, "Did the song sell anything to actually have royalties"?
Lawrence should have tracked his own ITunes sales. That way he could have determined whether he was owed compensation or not. Also, if he didn’t write or produce the song, he’s likely not due anything, even if it sold 100,000 copies. He would have to tour with the song in order to make any real money.
Right, that’s what I said. Kim had her stuff on iTunes and was pumping it up everyday. I believe that’s how she sold so many copies and made her money.
