    Hi Michelle,

I am a fan of your site! I’ve been a loyal reader for years. Keep up the great work!

With that being said, I’ve noticed over the years that you seem to have built a relationship with Tyler Perry. I love that man! Now, I’m not asking for you to hook me up or give me an introduction. LOL I do, however, want you to give him a message.

Can you tell him to leave the serious acting to the true Hollywood stars?

He is tarnishing his reputation by continuing to play these serious roles and doing a piss poor job of it. He failed at Good Deeds and now he’s failed as Alex Cross.

I really enjoy his plays and all of his Madea movies. Can you ask him to stay in his lane, and stop attempting to play roles for which he lacks the skill to portray?

I’m really proud of all his accomplishments, but this attempt to play grimy, gritty roles must stop! He is embarrassing himself. All of the Alex Cross movies have been successful until Mr. Perry filled the role.

    It was laughable!

Critics are talking about how poor the script was and underdeveloped, it had to be watered down
to accommodate the main character. It was awful! He needs to recognize that he should develop his skills as an actor or just stick to writing and directing. I’m tired of spending my money to support him and being disappointed.

Thanks for your time! I really hope you give him my message.

    A loyal reader

    Message delivered….

“Alex Cross” hit theatres last weekend (October 19th).  I haven’t seen the film so I can’t speak on it, but word on the curb is there are a lot of disappointed Perry fans out there.

Have you seen the new Alex Cross flick? What did you think of Tyler’s performance?

No, far from it. The problem is what is called typed cast, and he put himself in this situation of being the butt of the jokes. It’s hard to take someone who wears dresses and act a damn fool serious. It’s like with Mark Wahlberg, he played so many serious roles where it was impossible to visualize him in a comedy. He stated that he took the time to ease into it and study how to being comic. So, before you call people close minded, you should be knowledgeable of the subject.

Exactly, actors will tell you that they are afraid of becoming "type cast". Ask "Tash Mack". Imagine Wendy Raquel Robinson (the infamous Tash Mack) cast in a role to play Martha Stewart? Hard to imagine right? He put on those dresses and acted a fool waaayyy to long to now want to go outside the box and plan a masqueline man type role. Every time I see him I see "Madea". I hate that, but if you notice, Denzel never played a female and he could probably do it because of his "skills’.
Mr. Perry, you’re rich now, you can say NO.

No, they are not upset because he is not in a dress. They are upset because his dramatic (non bufoon) roles are substandard to the point of laughable. As the writer put it.

I am not a fan of Perry and certainly was not a fan of this. I think his portrayals, writing and directing are of the local community "Pepperpot Playhouse" variety. Almost everything he does lacks polish and sophisitcation. If he wants more ‘serious’ roles he will have to put the work in.

Unfortunatley, acting is 50% innate skill. You were either born with it or you were not. Everyone can improve, but there are some who it just comes as second nature. He is not one of those people.

I did not say they were born actors per se. I said part of acting is natural skill. That skill can be honed.

Even a bad actor can improve with time and craft, but some people naturally do it better. Just like singing. Just like dancing. Just like most other talents.

So take a seat! Every seat.

I agree with you here, Tyler has done a great job of breaking out of the mold most have him in. I don’t know anybody that makes transitions easy but I loved the movie and believe he did a great job. So, another cheer out to him for going through open doors! Keep doing what you feel! Remember, people under you are the only ones trying to pull you down. People above, lend a hand to pull you up!

I for one enjoy Tyler Perry’s movies… I do not feel he is believable in the movies such as Why Did I get Married etc. in the serious role. I have said that for years. I am open to change, we see some singers do GREAT in serious acting roles, and there are those such as BEYONCE that don’t do so great in my opinion. I enjoy Tyler Perry movies, just not as Alex Cross.

It is sad that we will support foolish rappers and their antics and most of them only give back to the strip clubs in the community but we will not support a talented black man who is a blessing to others.

I just feel that he lacks emotions in his serious. I just watched the above trailer and I felt like I was reading it as he was speaking. He has no energy that he gives off to pull you into a role this serious. He reminds me of how T.I. would do in this role, one dimensional. I don’t see Madea but I also don’t see a polished actor either. Btw, I am a fan of his so take it as you may.

I saw the movie and I really liked it and I enjoyed Tyler in the role. I would say that this was the FIRST time that I saw him acting and could really see EMOTIONS like the pain of his past experiences coming to play in his acting .. I especially loved the scene with the loving moment between him and his mother. I understand that we are used to seeing him as Madea and that can be a distraction when watching him in a serious role..BUT we can’t complain about him being in a dress & for "buffoonery" and then trash him when he takes on a serious role in a film he didn’t write, produce or direct. Bravo for him and I’d LOVE to see him in more roles like THIS written by OTHER people. The script was better to me than most of Tyler’s own scripts. In this movie, I couldn’t predict what was going to happen next. I often find TP’s films predictable. Congrats to him on this.

If she was a true fan she would not have went in on him like that. Delivery is everything and while stating the obvious, she could have done it in a more tactful way. Tyler can not please everyone. Initially people complained that he needed to stop writing, directing and starring in his own movies so now that he stopped yet again people have something to say. And the last time I checked he was a REAL actor( plays a woman better than a woman) in addition to writing and producing so Michelle please pass the message and tell this mediocre fan to have several seats including the one she took at the theatre after she spent her money to be "dissapointed"
What people fail to realize is that he doesn’t measure his success only by what his "fans" and critics say…true fans support by going to see the film, nobody asked you to buy the dvd/blu ray

Concerning AC, the people I know who saw it loved it and his performance. I think it’s great he’s breaking outside the box and trying to become a credible actor, and I wish him the best. He couldn’t possibly be worse than beyonce in "Obsessed." Talk about a laughable performance. And after awhile, Queen Latifah, Ice Cube and LL improved.

I thought Tyler did okay. However, I felt Matthew Fox carried the movie. I did laugh when Tyler raised his voice and he sounded just like Madea. In an interview Tyler stated he did extensive research with APD as well as acting classes to prepare for the role. Even though this will not be considered his big break out drama role, he is well on his way. Mr. Perry has proven he can overcome the odds and I think he will do just that, give him some more time.

To anyone that is a fan of James Patterson’s books (Alex Cross) it is clear that Tyler doesnt fit the image of the Alex Cross he describes in the book. I would think Idris Alba would have been perfect for the role, which i heard they offered him, but he turned down due to a conflict with his schdule. I do however feel, as type cast as the movie was Tyler did a good job in trying to break out of the mold we have put him into (Madea)in this film. Practice makes perfect, so keep perfecting your craft Tyler and dont go into a box. (Madea)I admire him as a person and an actor.

I don’t know if Idris actually turned the role down. James Patterson has been quoted as saying that he chose Tyler because "Idris is an actor, but Tyler is a franchise".

A LOT of the fans were disappointed. A lot of people felt that Tyler was perfect for the role of Alex Cross’s sidekick, with Idris as the lead.

The movie was good and I enjoyed the story line. I do believe that Tyler gave it his best shot and while by no means did he fail his performance was not Oscar worthy. In HIS movies and HIS plays he seems to adlib a lot which I think is a natural thing for him to do, it really felt like he was compelled to stick to the script which really didn’t allow him any room to better develop the character. There were certain scenes that I just expected more. I do think in time he will perfect this and feel more comfortable becoming the character v. sticking to the lines as written word for word.

Funny part is after seeing the movie my husband and I both said great movie but we would have loved to see Denzel or Jamie in that role… I am still very much so a supporter of Tyler so I am excited about seeing him grow.

The movie was GREAT!! And I only saw one preview for it. He did a good job for what the movie was.

My question to the writer… if he sucked in Good Deeds then why did you go back to see another non Madea movie!?!? Stupid. Madea movies are funny and have no point. Pure comedy.

It just baffles me that people always have to find the negative and be so judgemental. The movie was great. Tyler was great. Get a refund if you that mad about it and move on.

I believe he did an excellent job in both Good Deeds and Alex Cross. I was already tired of him doing shows like Madea. In order to show his talent he has to show diversity. Yes, I guess one has to get used to him being serious. However, I see growth and once I see growth I will continue to support. Continue to be successful and let the haters hate.

That what’s wrong with black america today. We believe what is said about each other and are always jumping on a bandwagon.

Here is a man who has found a way to make money, employ people, empower people, and give back and now the world is trying to tear him down and they are using his own race to do it.

It not about his personal life or about him doing what you want him to do, it’s about him making history, helpint others, and making away for some who don’t/didn’t have away.

I met someone who works at his studio and that person made the comments about the fire and it being a warning.

Not only do Tyler has to deal with the people in hollywood that are mad because he is making it without their money, now he has to deal with his own people turning on him just because the media tell them too.

As for the movie, there was nothing wrong with it.

It had a bad guy, a good guy, and a lot of explosions and bullets flying.

The negative comments are because people are really surprised he did better then they expected.

You didn’t see any trace of madea in this movie.

I saw the film and it was bad as a whole. Tyler Perry wasn’t horrible but he wasn’t good either. I saw the movie for free and still felt like they owed me something when it was over.

OMG !! What movie did you people see. I thought the movie was great and very entertaining. It kept me in suspense and waiting for the next scene. Every movie is not an academy award picture. You guys are just hater gators and don’t know how to expand your horizons so that you can see actors in other roles. That’s what an actor does; act "parts". Gee, they are not the same parts. Maybe you guys are star casted, meaning you can only see stars or actors in certain plots. Tyler, you did great and I truly enjoyed it, just as i did Good Deeds. I am waiting for the next one. Keep up the good works and as usual, don’t pay any attention to hater gators. I bet they wish they could do half of what you do. You get 5 star***** from me.

If you have ever read an Alex Cross book, then you know that he has some serious swag-Tyler has some, but not enough. Idris Elba would have definitely been better for this role..but because Mr. Perry does good works for others and never forgets to give God the glory,I’m supporting him in whatever he does-I wouldn’t care if he played Bobby Brown in a bio-pic, hunny, I’m there!

I’ve spoken to Mr. Perry about this subject already…
I asked him to bring to life E. Lynn Harris first novel, Invisible Life. I told him that I felt he was the only one that could pull it off and not make it into a blacks hating black gay’s movie or blacks feeling sorry for black gay’s movie. I could tell that he was afraid of the subject matter of the book.
I feel that he needs to give Madea a rest for a minute but could probably tackle the Invisible life series and bring some new life (shock value) into his brand again.

I bet somebody told him the same thing about following his dream to be a writer, I bet somebody told him not to dress as an old black woman, I bet somebody told him not to own his own studio……see where I’m going with this. Clearly entertainment is his realm. I bet he’s laughing at haters right now, as he’s spending his many checks for the many hats that he wears quite well.

I’m in the minority, but I actually think Tyler did a great job. In "Kiss the Girl", Morgan Freeman played Alex Cross. So that dispels any notion that Tyler didn’t fit any description of Dr. Cross in the books. My only critique is that the movie didn’t focus on Dr. Cross, as the previous movies did. In "Kiss the Girl", the producers/writers focused on Dr. Cross’s intellect to solve the case. Here, that wasn’t the case. Overall, still a good movie.

I am actually happy to see Tyler branching out and away from that Madea role. He wants to be taken seriously as an actor , who can tackle roles outside of the comedy realm/ Madea was funny also but several plays and movies..tv appearances later I’m just about over that character. I will go to see this movie asap ,so that I can give a fair review of it and his acting. There is always room for improvement.

I was rather sick of the Medea movies so I left it alone. I respect Tyler Perry for going out and taking on more serious roles can’t hurt and I haven’t seen the new Alex Cross movie but Morgan Freeman played Kiss the Girls and how can you come behind such an accomplished actor and fill his shoes. I applaud him for trying.

As for the director not wanting to cast Idris Elba because he is an actor and Tyler Perry is a franchise comment is laughable because Idris Elba is in talks to become the next James Bond NOT Alex Cross. Then we will see who will be the bigger franchise because I much rather see Mr. Elba as James Bond than Alex Cross.

The reviews by critics were terrible, but most people who saw the film for themselves enjoyed it. I went to see the film last Sunday & like it. I thought Tyler did a good job. I think he should have done a few more non-madea roles before taking this on though. The public isn’t ready for Tyler Perry the Actor. It was a huge transition & people rejected it without seeing it. By the end of the film, I forgot about Madea and the TP franchise. OK except for the one line about seeing him at the gates of hell before he would let him take another person he loved. I think they threw that line in to draw his audience #Fail. I almost passed on seeing it because of that line. I’m glad I changed my mind. Matthew Fox was AMAZING & the previews should have focused more on his character.

Why are haters being compared to how much money Tyler has? His ability to play a character in a particular role or peoples critique of his acting doesn’t mean that anyone is hating on him. I love dude… Opinion wise, I appreciate him branching out but he made his global fame on the shock value of Madea and family oriented subject matters. I’m just saying if he did B. Boy Blues or Invisible Life Black folk will be shocked again and he would gain more respect because he would be bringing to life a subject matter for people to face instead of sweeping it under the church pew or rug.

I do agree that everyone is not hating on him when giving their opinion on how well he did or didnt do. I am not so sure about the Invisible Life and other story…folks already say that he is gay so I think this would only fuel the rumors AND if he were to do it and be good folks would really get to talking. I see and appreciate him wanting to branch out from Madea BUT as good as he is in that role I do think that spending more time with an acting coach is needed so that we can connect with his character. I wanted so bad to connect with Alex Cross and I just couldnt…

Saw it, HATED it. I like Tyler, paid full price and legally purchased every DVD he released, even own the HORRIBLY corny ones that he’s not even in and have a Tyler Perry official DVD shelf in my entertainment room. He’s not good, AT ALL, at serious roles that require him to pull at the people’s heart strings, he can write those feelings and casts GREAT actors to fulfill his vision, he’s great at writing and casting, but him being the "MAN" and making you feel some kind of serious way is a FAIL every time. Good Deeds was HORRIBLE, and the good deed done by the right performer would have pulled at the heart strings but with Tyler and old boy over acting and being overly angry at black women, it was a "please go off, I want a refund" situation. Even when he does short spots in the madea films as the family lawyer it’s BAD acting, he’s not even believable in a 5 minute scene as a family lawyer, he’s just not good outside of his madea comedy, and the comedy was BAD in the last movie(witness protection was a RIP-OFF). It’s not a big deal, so what he can’t do everything, writing is a great gift, that’s the same problem Ashanti and Keri Hilson have, not being satisfied with their GREAT writing skills and wanting to be the face of their work. Man SIT DOWN and stop trying to be everything in the industry, dramatic acting is not for Tyler, mildly dramatic acting isn’t even for Tyler, again, his family lawyer role is corny and STOP NOW with the attempts to be sexy, that was a FAIL in both Good Deeds and Alex Cross, remember in Good Deeds when he changed it up and put on some jeans and starting dancing, That was better than every scene in Alex Cross and that’s not a good thing. Sometimes when you favor an entertainer, even when they funk it up, you credit them as doing good just because their your fav, Martin Lawrence has funked up a lot (A LOT)of movies and I still was like, "well, he did good on some parts." And I see some folks doing that for their fav. Tyler Perry. Anybody who says beyonce lacks emotion and acting skills could look to her as a warning against seeing Alex Cross, because she and him are on the same skill level of bad acting. When you go see a GOOD performer in a movie you feel them and might even cry or cheer for them as if it’s a real victory, you get lost in the story, but Tyler doesn’t have that, the whole movie I was fully aware I was sitting in a cold theater watching the end result of some bad script work and some horrible directing, I didn’t get lost not a one scene, not even the ones where violence and tragedy struck, it was like yeah ok actor, next line please, next scene.

LOL!!! Wow! The lawyer character is not believable by any means in the Madea movies. Let me be a little more clear, I think he would do a good job with bringing Invisible Life to the screen by producing it, not acting or lack there of, in it.

I like Tyler Perry but after I heard him utter that line about meeting someone in hell I perished. I enjoy change I enjoyed his cameo in "Star Trek". I really liked Why Did I get Married he was great in that. Now with that said I just don’t believe him in this action man role. Looks forced is all but hey everyone has different quality they look for. To each their own.
