  • Mom Allows 7 Year Old Daughter to Have Plastic Surgery… [VIDEO]

    Apr, 15 2011 | Written by ATLien

How young is too young for plastic surgery? Is there even an age limit? Apparently not…

The mother of a 7-year-old girl says her daughter was teased about her funny looking ears, so she allowed her daughter to have a cosmetic procedure to avoid schoolyard bullying…

    WTF?!?

    Before/After photos + video below:

7 year-old Samantha Shaw underwent painful cosmetic surgery to have her ears pinned back. The reason for the surgery, according to her mother, was bullying.

“This was a preventative way, so she wouldn’t get bullied,” Cammy Shaw, a South Dakota mom, told “Good Morning America.” “Kids are mean. That’s just how they are.”

Although little Samantha had not experienced any “bullying”, Cammy feared that her daughter’s ears would eventually make her self-conscious and shy.

Dr. Steven Pearlman, the New York City plastic surgeon who performed the procedure said that kids with “abnormalities” such as Samantha’s were likely to be less popular and “harm their developing self-identity.”

“They get called things like ‘big ears’ or ‘Dumbo’ or ‘mouse ears,’” he said.

Cammy said that her daughter’s ears, which stuck out, had made her a target for rude remarks, like “monkey ears,” but she admitted that thus far the rudest comments had come from adults, not kids.  She said that adults were always asking her what was wrong with her daughter’s ears.

“Right in front of her they say, ‘oh my God, what’s wrong with her ears,’ ” said Cammy. ” ‘What happened to her ear, that’s so gross

So what did she decide to do about it? Pay for her daughter a lil nip tuck….

Little Samantha BEFORE (left) and AFTER…

Cammy said she would do anything to keep her daughter from being bullied or taunted in the schoolyard. [Sidebar: Probably because she (the mother) was bullied herself.]

The mom explains her decision on Good Morning America…

VIDEO: Plastic Surgery for 7 Year Olds?

The world is filled with funny looking kids who grow up to be great beauties so it bothers me that a mother would allow her 7 year old child to go through an elective procedure merely because of a CHANCE that she could have gotten bullied.

This lady needs therapy and perhaps her own personal plastic surgeon.  It’s really very sad that she would put so much focus on her child’s looks when you can clearly see from the before/after photos that Samantha was a cute lil girl with big “A”zz ears.

Now she has to go through life looking like Dr. Spock…. I can’t with these lunatic moms! Not today…

If you felt your child was “flawed” would you “fix” him/her? :-?

So this child is going to grow up with the perception that if something is different about her apperance she can just go under the knife to fix it? What about teaching this young lady to love the person she sees in the mirror? This lady is pushing her own insecurities on this child; some people don’t need kids.

This is pretty sick! Everyone has something unique about them that makes them special. Who’s to say that this little girl isn’t going to have "problems" with her new ears which will get her teased and picked on and affect her self-esteem…and want to get them fixed again. She is not learning a good life lesson here…she is not learning how to cope. Our society is too disposable and quick-fixable as it is. Give the girl some credit and support her to deal with what she has.

-My 7year old daughter (who is in the 2nd grade) wanted bunny ears for Easter and when I bought them for her she put them on right away and walked out of the store with them on. She kept them on all day while we went on our errands. One father with his tween-age daughter did make a comment that she looked "pathetic"…my response was "And what style, flare and independence and courage does your daughter have?"

Bottom line, it’s not just kids but also adults who are bullies. And from my experience the bully usually have parents who suck lemons and have a sour outlook on life. I feel no sorrow for them. You did your own grave, just don’t drag your kids down.

I understand a mother’s need to comfort and protect her child. But using cosmetic surgery (at such a young age) as a “preventative” may foster her daughters subsequent issues with self-image.

She may grow up to feel that the body she was given should be altered for every natural flaw

A touchy subject indeed! But I kind of side with the parent slightly (key word) in the fact that people (not just kids) have no regards for feelings. If it’s something that can be altered to reduce the chances of complications, and unhappiness is expressed, then go for it. The concern I have is where is the line drawn? Yes, to most, it’s overboard; but that goes to show you that society’s will is to set a standard of what everyone should look like. No one really cares about some of the minor things that make us unique and gives less than a about the soul.

HELL I WISH A WHOLE LOT OF OF PARENTS WOULD GET THEIR KIDS EARS FIXED WHEN THEY ARE SMALL. I’M NOT FOR FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY UNLESS THERE’S A HUGE ABNORMALITY LIKE CLEF PALATE, UNEVEN EYES,HEMATOMA OR A HUGE HUMP OR CROOK IN THE NOSE THAT CAUSING BREATHING PROBLEMS BUT THE EARS I’M ALL FOR. I KNOW ADULTS THAT HAVE HAD THEIR EARS DONE AND SAY HOW THEY WISH THEIR PARENTS WOULD’VE HAD IT DONE FOR THEM WHEN THEY WERE SMALL. SO I DON’T SEE THE BIG DEAL WITH THIS. YEAH ITS HOW SHE WAS BORN BUT SO WERE PEOPLE WITH MESSED UP TEETH, BUSHY EYEBROWS AND NAUGHTY HAIR BUT WE DON’T TRIP ABOUT THEM DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT OR WE COMPLAIN WHEN WE SEE FOLKS ESP RICH PEOPLE WITH THE MESSED UP TEETH AND DO NOTHING ABOUT IT B/C THEY FEEL THAT’S HOW THEY WERE BORN……..JENNY JONES!!!!

This is a very common surgery for children and is done all the time. @coco21…please, you know if you had the money you would do it too. And if this girl’s parents have the money to spend on her, who are you to say it’s wrong?
@maximvelocity, did you seriously just compare this little girl’s obviously deformed ears to your daughter’s fake bunny ears? Really? So you think that you impressed upon your daughter that it’s ok to go out in public and it doesn’t matter what people say…NO. You impressed upon your daughter that if she wants to wear fake bunny ears then that’s fine..and it is, lots of adults do that too. But, you can take those ears off, you don’t have to wear them everyday. Now, MAKE your daughter wear them EVERYDAY (like this little girl had to with her REAL ears) and see what happens. I’d love to hear the outcome. At least then it would be a true comparison (well almost, those ears are still fake and can be removed).

She’s only 7. Why have surgery when she’s not finished growing and her looks will change anyway? None of us look exactly the same way now as we did when we were 7. What she needs to do is teach her kid how to fight and talk back. The world is not, nor will it ever be, your friend. Nobody is obligated to be nice to you. This is what parents neglect to teach their children. Kids need a thick skin cuz it only gets worse the older you get.

Well I personally feel as though the mother is the one who has a problem with the childs ears and thats the main problem right there. If she would have just accepted her and loved her and thought her that she is perfect the way she is then she wouldnt have a problem with them. I personally think that she looks better with the ears they were her signature. And the mother has started an insecurity in the little girl because everytime she feels as though something is wrong shes going to want to get it fixed!!

Let me pose this question to all of you…If you think something is wrong with you, what do you do? I fix it!!! So please tell me what is wrong with this Mother letting her know that if there is something about yourself that you don’t like that you can fix it if you so choose.

And I will end with this…THIS IS HER CHILD, NOT YOURS, NOT YOURS, NOT HERS, NOT HIS, THIS WAS HER DECISION AND SHE MADE IT (WITH HER CHILD) SO WHO ARE ANY OF YOU TO SAY IT WAS RIGHT OR WRONG. I’M SURE YOU DON’T LET JUST ANYONE TELL YOU WHAT YOU SHOULD OR SHOULDN’T DO WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR CHILD. (HMMMMMMM)

      @ Sandra

We’re all grown. This is a child we’re talking about. Adults don’t always make the best decisions where children are concerned either (see story about mommma who let her 7 year old babysit himself). Guess we should have stayed our butts out of that story too. LOL

    • maximvelocity says:

@sandra: you make some very valid points.
But really, did you honestly think that anyone would write something in a blog spot to compare their child’s fake bunny ears to this child’s real ones? Just to set the record straight – the last thing I wrote before the blurb about my daughter was that I thought the parent(s) should support the child with the child’s "uniqueness" (which is what I consider this child’s ears). I was NOT making a comparison. And FYI, I my daughter has her own "uniqueness" that she deals with every day in public in order to live her life.

FYI – Here’s a list of people who have lived with and are living with "big ears":
Will Smith, Barack Obama, Channing Tatum, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Gardner, John Kraskinski, Michael Phelps, Calista Flockhart, George Harrison.

OK. When I first read the title I was like WTH. Then I read on and thought this is not as bad as it seems. My friend had her ears done when she was 12.

I thought this child had her nose done, or facelift or something like that.

I am not appauled by this.

I wouldn’t have my child undergo surgery simply b/c of the chance of being teased. Believe me when I say someone is going to find something to tease this child about, I think we have all experienced being teased and we have to teach our children to rise above it. Now once she gets older and she has a personal conflict within herself about it and she truly wants to change it maybe we could look into the surgery. If a child is over weight and is being teasing, do we allow them to have a gastric by pass or some other serious surgery??

my mom didnt like it but she didnt like seeing me cry either.. the doctor told me that they had 2 nurses calm my mom down because she started screaming and trying to get in when she saw blood on the doctor’s gloves. this story doesnt prove that that mother is horrible.. it proves that a mother would do anything for her child.

If you had extremely unattractive/abnormal features you would be more understanding. If your kid has severe acne, would you take them to a dermatologist? Do you or your daughters wear high heels to appear taller or slimmer? Do/did you or your children wear dental braces to fix teeth that were crooked or not perfect? Is it because a "knife" is involved that the nay-sayers are against this procedure? I grew up having a large gap between my two front teeth. As I grew older and others were noticing my "unique" feature more and more – along with the increasing negative comments, I began talking and smiling less and less. I withdrew from socializing all together. I did not get treatment for any procedure because money didn’t allow it. As soon as I moved away from home and got a job, I took care of my teeth. To this day, 30 years later, I wish my teeth would have been fixed early on. The alienation and discomfort I felt are long lasting and painful reminders of a time that could have been much more fun. If I could have gotten my teeth fixed early on, would I have found other "flaws" to fix? No. This child will/should be forever grateful her mother removed her from the pool of children "easily picked on because of ABNORMAL features, thus having low self esteem" to the pool of normal, self obsessed teenagers we see today.
