  • Bishop Eddie Long Chooses Mediation Over Public Court Battle….

    Dec, 8 2010 | Written by ATLien

You probably haven’t heard much about the Bishop Eddie Long sex scandal recently, but the case is moving along.

The first hearing was held for the four sexual coercion lawsuits against “The Bishop,” with both sides opting for mediation to avoid the publicity of a trial.

Yep… it’s official. He’s totally GUILTY in my book!

As I was watching CNN’s Anderson Cooper, as he discussed the implications of Long’s decision to mediate the case instead of fighting it in court. If you follow me on TWITTER, you may have noticed my shock & awe as I watched the report unfold…

Bishop Eddie Long agreeing to mediation of sexual coercion changes everything…. Members of Long’s New Birth Missionary Baptist Church have stood by their Bishop throughout this entire ordeal, with many even commenting here in his defense.

I seriously wonder if these recent developments will make New Birth members think twice, or is the Kool-Aid really that strong out there in Lithonia?

Mediation of a sexual allegation is tantamount to an admission of guilt in some form or fashion. Someone innocent of such a charge wouldn’t dare negotiate a deal if the claims against them are baseless and untrue…. would they?

Once the accused agrees to mediation, they forfeit the right to ever claim innocence. Understand that the Bishop stood in front of his pulpit, days after the 4th allegation hit the courthouse and blatantly proclaimed his innocence.

Albeit, he didn’t actually SAY “I’m innocent” but it was kind of implied as he compared himself to David facing a battle with Goliath..

[READ: Bishop Eddie Long Wants You To Know... TRANSCRIPT + VIDEO]

In essence, once Long agreed to the mediation, he admitted to some degree that he is guilty of “something” and if the mediation is successful, we’ll never know what that is.

Long’s New Birth congregation,  as well as the general public, all want him to publicly address the allegations.  But we all know that’s not gonna happen. So unless mediation falls through and the parties end up in court, we will just have to take what’s been revealed so far and make our own assessments.

But in doing so we should all consider this…

Long agreed to a confidential, closed door mediation with plaintiffs who alleged that he sexually coerced them when they were young boys in his congregation.  He did so ONLY to avoid a public trial, where presumably more details would be brought to light.

I’m sure Jamal Parris’ emotional revelations didn’t help.

[WATCH: Jamal Parris (Long Accuser) Breaks His Silence... VIDEO]

Mediation is often used in business dealings but in a case like this, were someone is facing a sex charge, I don’t see where there is a grey area. Bishop Long adamantly denied the allegations and had he not said ANYTHING, perhaps mediation wouldn’t be viewed as a acknowledgment of guilt…. but he did, so it is.

I’ve said all along that Long would cut a check and hope that this all will go away. Looks like I was right.

Morris O’Kelly of the Huffington Post sums it up quite nicely:

Long has said that he is “not a perfect man,” outlandishly compared his plight to that of David when confronting Goliath. We all remember Long admonishing his congregation and news media, “I’ve got five rocks and I haven’t thrown one yet.”

If mediation is his first “rock,” then a complete admission of guilt must be the next. There’s just nowhere else to go. Instead of opting for the opportunity to clear his name for the sake of his congregation and legacy; Long has chosen to quietly, secretly, address the allegations of sexual coercion; presumably with a sealed “mutual agreement.”

Recognize the strategy for what it is and its obvious transparency. Long is forfeiting the opportunity to clear his name publicly to pay for his sins privately — pun absolutely intended.

The court has only been tasked with determining whether Bishop Long is liable for sexual coercion, whether he used his power, influence and more specifically, lavish gifts as a pathway to sexual relationships with at least four young males. In a court of law, Bishop Long conceivably could have been found “not guilty” (of the charges) but still could have engaged in the sexual relationships. In other words, he would still be guilty in an ethical or moral sense with his congregation. The alleged relationships mean multiple adulterous affairs, with a homosexual twist — not a good look for homophobic Bishops.

Translation: Even if Long were to win the suit, he could still lose everything. “Not guilty” of the charges is not to be confused with being “innocent,” and Bishop Long seems to clearly understand the distinction. Readers and the New Birth congregation need to understand it as well. Do not let these actions pass unnoticed or without response.

For a completely innocent man with no extra-marital dalliances (heterosexual or otherwise), a trial would be a welcome option to pursue complete and irrevocable exoneration. In fact, it’s the ONLY option. In this instance, the accusers would tell their side, Long tells his and he presumably walks out of court with his image, career and legacy intact.

A completely innocent man that is…

There is no compromise on the truth. Either Long is innocent or he is guilty. A court deems someone “guilty” or “not guilty” but the truth determines innocence or guilt.

O.J. Simpson was found “not guilty.” Laurence Powell and Stacey Koon (Rodney King) were found “not guilty.” Don’t confuse court verdicts with the truth.

The truth in this instance is far more complex than just the stories of the four accusers. There are implied issues of sexual misconduct, marital infidelity, undertones of pedophilia and child molestation and questions about the authenticity of the mission of the LongFellows Youth Academy. Long’s possible guilt extends beyond the courtroom, which is the fly in the ointment — and mediation more than just suggests he has unclean hands. READ MORE

The mediation is scheduled to begin in February 2011 and if the parties can’t come to an agreement, a tentative trial date has been set for July 11, 2011.

I’m just amazed how he got his congregation snowed. I guarantee you he hasn’t lost too many members. I am so tired of these ministers condeming sin but they are deep in it themselves. Can someone explain to me how pastoring became such a big business. What happen to pastors living modesly? There are too many pimps in the pulpit. Did these guys forgot how Jesus lived? They should live like Him and be like Him.

Keep shining the light on thus story. I think they will settle, but I also think the flock may stay. This is not a church. It’s a business and it’s members often benefit from relationships formed at New Birth.

God exposed Eddie Long as a fraud. The signs were there, but folks ignored his actions: the homophobic rhetoric, the wigs, the muscle shirts and fixation on young men– what a contradiction. Now God has made it plain. Anyone denying it, is simply pretending. Eddie Long is gay, he likes sleeping with teenage boys and he’s a fraud.

Interesting!! No comments of support of Eddie Long for the first time, since the news broke of the allegations on this site. That say a whole lot!!!

Everyone was saying wait until the trial. I said from the beginning, as a man of God their shouldn’t have to be a trial for him to say whether he did it or not. There have been too many accusations, and you can’t say I’m "not guilty" of these charges.

Another thing that bothers me, is the fact of the published book "Snakes In The Pulpit" in 2007 that name Bishop Eddie Long in it. Accusing him of the same exact thing as these young men are. If you’re a public figure, and someone defame your name and character, wouldn’t you take legal actions? He never said or did anything. This implies it must be true.

My next question is how can Dr. Bernice King accept this and not say anything as a lead pastor? Because this mean he has cheated on his wife, even if it was consensual, which I seriously doubt at least with this case. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t partake in a lifestyle that he has consensual sex with men. Which is another problem because he is telling his parishioners this is a prohibited lifestyle.

All of this water is muddy..

      Peace!!

It’s a whole lot more to this that must be real damaging towards him but I wonder what his dumb flock will think or will they continue to stay in denial.

Bottom line: Bishop Long can be judged by God …and God only. No one else can judge or condemn him. Hypocrites! We all commit sins everyday…aware and unaware. And one sin is not worse than the other. Fornication, adultery, lying, backbiting…and the list goes on. Even insulting someone is a sin. I use to pass judgement on folk…until I was told to learn how to have some compassion and take a look in the mirror at my own faults. Now, I try to think before I seriously pass judgement on somweone else; because I’m aware that my sh&^%t stinks, too.

That doesn’t mean he’s guilty. Suing is against Jesus teachings in the bible. Disputes (civil & criminal) are supposed to be resolved by someone in the ‘faith’.

So while he looks guilty in the ‘world’ he did what most leaders would professionally expect from a pastor by requesting mediation.

People will make all kinds of excuses for a preacher….Fact is, Long is supposedly a religious figure who has preached against Homosexuality and if he was legit,he would have fought these charges on his ‘so called" belief alone.

For people with common sense,he had no option other than to fight these charges,so basically you’re saying he lied when he stood his wig wearing arse in front of his congregation and talked about throwing stones, knowing he had no stones to throw.

I wonder how Frank Ski will try to twist this,oh he will say the same bull that some of these enablers here say and so will Eddie Long but he will also use his pulpit to speak in between the lines about this issue, while of course making himself seem innocent of course.

WE ARE SO CONCERNED WITH WHAT EVERYBODY ELSE IS DOING INSTEAD OF FOCUSING ON OURSELVES. EVIDENTLY THE SO-CALLED VICTIMS OR THEIR LAWYER DON’T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THIS MEDIATION SO THAT SPEAKS VOLUME. THE SO-CALLED VICTIMS ARE GONNA GET WHAT THEY WANT IN THE FIRST PLACE AND THAT IS MONEY. THAT IS REALLY ALL THEY WANT. IF SOMEONE DID SOMETHING OF THAT NATURE TO ME OR MY KIDS THEN THERE IS NOTHING FOR US TO MEDIATE ABOUT. I WOULD WANT THE WORLD TO KNOW WHAT WENT ON AND ALL THE DETAILS BUT EVERYONE IS SO QUICK TO SAY HE IS GUILTY. WHATEVER IF HE IS GUILTY THEN THE SO-CALLED VICTIMS ARE AS WELL. THEY WERE AT THE AGE WHERE THEY KNEW RIGHT FROM WRONG SO I AM NOT GOING TO DEFEND THEM OR BISHOP LONG BECAUSE THEY DON’T OWE ME ANYTHING. WHATEVER DECISION THEY COME TO WILL NOT AFFECT ME IN NO SHAPE FORM OR FASHION SO I SUGGEST ALL OF YOU LOOK AT THE SITUATION THE SAME WAY UNLESS LIKE I SAID YOU ARE ONE OF THE VICTIMS, PART OF HIS CONGREGATION OR HIS FAMILY!!!!!!

But if I had money and I could buy myself out and guarantee that I would remain with my family besides being behind bars then thats what I would do. Do you think that I would be dumb enough to put my fate into the hands of people who think just like you on here…..Helll Nawl. At the end of the day if Iwas a grown man and someone had molested me and took advantage of me in my youth no amout of money could buy me out I would want they azz to rot in prison, so I give the ACCUSERS the side eye.

You are a massive disgrace and you sound like a cult member. You get upset at those who are not members of that evil church of yours stating our opinion on this issue just because disent is not tolerated at NewBirth.

There are members of that church who are scared as hell right now because of that petition that went around calling for wig wearing Eddie’s dismissal.I know I would not want to be part of a church that make people fearful for their own safety, sounds mobbish to me.

Just because you have no standards for yourself does not mean that people that question Ms. Eddie Long should keep quiet about what we may think of him….Anyone with discernment know that Eddie Long is not legit.

I wish people would stop calling him a bishop. This is a false title for Baptists. He’s a fraud and he needs to step down and seek counseling. His abuse of his role is troubling. Not only did he take advantage of these men, but he used religion and spirituality to do it. He also took advantage of vulnerable people. Many of the young men attending these acadamies are from single parent homes. Black women believed that they were not able to effectively guide their children alone since they were unmarried. Eddie Long recognized this and picked his prey. So many are right: ” he wouldn’t do it to my kid.”. My kids have been to Europe and Latin America with me and they ain’t sleeping or travelling with any man alone, except their father. Let’s all get real and stop being silent about this. I am also disturbed by his homophobic rhetoric. How dare he push the congregation to condemn gay people and at the same time engage in same sex relations with teenage boys. Eddie Long is a sick person and shouldn’t be leading any group of people, including his spouse and children.

@td Before you make a statement like, "one sin is not worse than the other. Fornication, adultery, lying, backbiting…and the list goes on." please get your Bible out and study first. This is very incorrect.

According to Eddie Long & his parishioners he is anointed by God. If this is the case, the holy spirit of God is directing the footsteps of this spiritual leader at all times & has appointed him. There is one UNFORGIVABLE sin, and that is you can’t sin against the "holy spirit" of God.

LUKE 12:10, "And everyone that says a word against the Son of Man, that will be forgiven; But he that blasphemes against The Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

MARK 3:29, "Whoever blasphemes against The Holy Spirit will never have forgiveness, but is guilty of everlasting sin."

MATTHEW 12: 31-32 "Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. And whoever shall speak a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age, or in the age to come"

The definition of Blasphemy is expressing a lack of reverence. It is the showing of disrespect toward something sacred. Blaspheming the Holy Spirit occurs when a person who knows better rejects the Word of God which the Holy Spirit is attempting to bring into the heart of that person. Hence this rejection or this refusal is telling the Holy Spirit that what he is trying to bring into the person’s heart is not being believed, that it’s not worth the effort or the time to even look into it or study it, that the very Word of God is not important, and that the beliefs and teachings of Jesus Christ are being rejected.

God has given us all free will and whether we accept Jesus Christ is eventually left up to us. But the Holy Spirit spends your entire life trying to bring Jesus Christ into your life, and if you die still rejecting his efforts, then you have committed the unforgivable sin. If you leave this world still having a unrepentant heart, then you have committed the unforgivable sin. And God will not want those in heaven with him who have been so contemptuous and rebellious. Ask yourself this one simple question. Would you want to spend eternity with people who are not sorry, and who don’t want to stop participating in thievery, adultery, murder, and hate?

This isn’t Sherry speaking, this is the Bible speaking. Eddie Long knew better, it wasn’t once, twice, or three times. He kept doing the same thing over and over. That is an unrepentant attitude.

For whomever said you don’t take people to court is referring to 1 Corinthians 6:1: Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?

In this scripture the Jews had sought judgments against their brothers or fellow Jews in heathen courts. This Paul indignantly rebukes. The Jews themselves made it a rule never to carry cases before heathen tribunals. Much worse was it in Christians.

Or you can look at like, the unjust – The heathens. A Christian could expect no justice from these. The saints – Who might easily decide these smaller differences in a private and friendly manner.

So, now in this case Eddie Long is calling these young men heathens, and what right does he or any of us have to do that? How could they expect a fair hearing if they took their case before the brothers in New Birth? Either way it would seem as though Eddie Long would owe New Birth an Guilty or Not Guilty plea.

And if New Birth is willing to sit back and allow him to go behind closed doors and never answer to these charges, and help pay for his defense and settle this case, they are just as guilty as he in committing the acts. That mean he lied to his wife, the church, and more importantly to God. Just because the state of Georgia age of consent is 17, doesn’t make it right. Because if that had been my son, I would want his behind up under that jail. Because they can’t put him in jail, the only way they can hurt him is in his pocket & his reputation. If you all can’t see that, the devil is all up in New Birth, hook, lined, and sinked. You may as well be on the Titanic.

      Peace!!

You sound ignorant! If you are, indeed, who you claim to be, than you would know that Christians are taught to not pass judgement on anyone; which is what you are doing. I did not use the Bible to defend the Bishop, because I was not present to know whether he is guilty or not. I simply stated what God/Christ states in the Bible. You, on the other hand, were present; and this is why you are absolutely sure that he did what some are saying he did…and this is why you can absolutely say that he is guilty. As a matter of fact, possibly, you know who shot JFK…or MLK. Hey, where is Jimmy Hoffa? Unless you are totally avoid of sin…were a fly on the wall…and one who can comprehend, speak English, snitch and tell us what exactly went down…than you should abide what what the Bible states. Who are you to state, and/or imply that you KNOW he is guilty…unless you were present? And if you were present, and did nothing about it, than you are just as guilty as you are stating that he is.

      And to you Mss Sherry:

I did not state that he was guilty or not. Why? I was not there to come to said conclusion. I simply stated that Christians are not to pass judgement on one another; and that God will do the judging. I can’t comdemn this man, at all. I’m supposed to have compassion for both sides. Therefore, all your unnecessary diatribe did was support the aforementioned: that God will judge as he see fit. None of us will ever be void of sin. As a result, I can’t pass judgment on someone elses sin. I’m taught that the Blood is powerful enough to cover any form of sin, whatever it might be…but it is up to God…not you. God makes the decision as to whether He will or will not forgive one’s transgressions. However, since you wish to quote from the Bible, consider the following.. Matthew 7: "Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? ETC…First remove the plank from your own eye. and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from you brother’s eye." My point: I will not say your sh&^%t stinks, w/o considering how my own smells.

@ td. She’s not a dummy. I’m sure you wish she was stupid so you could dismiss her views. However, she presented a fairly thoughtful argument explaining in greater detail why Eddie Long is out if order. I don’t understand why anybody would approve of his behavior. And why in the world do you think God would want you to sit silently and watch. Time to start thinking about the word and not just reading it.

Again I am speechless…these comments…I think this is why social networking sites, blogs, etc. and even mainstream media news gets so much attention and the truth is never revealed. Everyone is out for some popularity contest…what can I post to get the most comments/attention, what story can I report to keep our ratings up…this is ridiculous…this is a "gossip" site and it is here to serve a purpose.

I’ll state again: I’m not defending the Bishop. I’m simply stating that I, me personally, understand that I CAN NOT pass judgment on him, or anyone else. How can you take from what I wrote and remotely state that I am defending him. I did not say he should have done what some are saying he did. I have my own issues to be dealing with. Therefore, I will not judge anyone else. This, and ONLY this, is my point. Others are emphatically stating that he is guilty, w/o being absolutely sure what went down. I refuse to do so. I live in NY. I’m not a member of his church; so I have no biased rerason to be defending him. Like I’ve stated: I have compassion for both sides. And you, or no one else, can say that I am wrong for being compassionate.

As a matter of fact, after re-reading your message…I didn’t even call her a dummy. The words "ignorant" and "dummy" have different meanings. Ignorant simply means "..unaware of something…" I’m unaware of a lot of things. Therefore, I am ignorant towards many subjects. I don’t know all there is to know about everything. No one does. If you comment on what I state… fine; but don’t misinterpret what I’m trying to convey.

And…I think it is ignorant for anyone to think that they are entitled to pass judgment on someone else…especially in light of Matthew 7…from the Kings own mouth. If the Bishop did what is alleged that he did, than he is absolutely wrong for doing so. Nevertheless, it is still not my place to condemn him.

Romans 8:33-34…"Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns?…" I’m not even saying that what the young lady said about blaspheming the Holy Spirit is wrong; because it is correct. But none of us is the Holy Spirit of God. Therefore, none of us have been blaspemed against…so we should not be the ones to condemn the Bishop, or anyone else’s sin. It is up to God to condemn…not mistake ridden, mishapped and flawed mere mortals…of which all of us are.

One thing that is conveyed in this blog post is there are many "religious fanatics" that will make all kinds of excuses and they TRY to use God to do it but it’s God that reveal the truth.

Understand that "SPIRITUAL " people don’t fall for such tricks because spiritual people are beyond that SURFACE thinking of religion….

SPIRITUAL people are not easily led nor or we EASILY fooled."Religious " people are easily fooled and they also think "religious and spirituality" are the same things.SPIRITUAL people KNOW there is a difference.

Do I think he is guilty? Yes. Do I know he is guilty? No. Do I believe that there is any possible way that he would not have lost this case had it gone to court? No. Guilty or not, under these circumstances, he would have been stupid to have taken a chance on giving up his freedom by insisting on taken this case to cuurt.

@Alan..Jesus became poor so that we can be rich. So he doesnt want to see us out there in the streets with nowhere to call home or lay his head..these are His words..He said above all things He wish that we would "be in good health and prosper as our soul prospers…So that is a desire of His for us…but the way we go about it is what is the real deal. I have said it many times on here..My pastor is a millionaire but he became one BEFORE the Lord told him to star the church. He doesnt take a salary nor does he make offering a big event where we have to march around and listen to the music and dance to the plate..We give before or after and no one even knows when most people give because we dont call attention to it.. My husband is the minister of music and I am a worship singer..we dont take a salary..God gave us all businesses and not the business of ‘church’..so it is very terrible when i see someone like this who has no skills other than pimping the members… I never have listened to a message from this man and never will..nor do i listen to any televangelists because they are pretty much all in error if you ask me..I wont even go into why..but we all need to forgive this man for disappointing so many people and not hold a grudge against him ..for all we know he could have repented by now and that that doesnt take away the pain left for this guys and so many of us watching from the outside, but it is the right thing for us to do, because when its all said and done he will have to answer to God for all that he did, and so we should just try to make sure we have ourselves tight for that day too. God bless.

Mediation, my eye!!! If he was “innocent” of all charges, what is there to mediate. He would be going to court to defend his name… He just want to pay them off, and place a gag order as well as a confidential clause so that his ” church” will not find out the truth.

All that have something negative to say about whomever (the Bishop, victims, Royce…anyone) …need to look at themselves…none is perfect BUT the FATHER….if you are not the FATHER then you are NOT PERFECT! You have flaws!!!! I am a former teacher…Children lie all the time…I would hope that if I were in a position (accused of such a crime), that I would be given the benefit of the doubt…and be judged by the law of the land…innocent until proven guilty… It’s easy being on the outside looking in….because when you are outside you only get a portion of the picture depending on where you are standing!!! When you on the inside you can get a better view…not just a portion there of by looking from the outside. People let’s not be so quick to judge until we are perfect being! All has sined and fallen short of the glory of God!!!!!!
