  • WTF?!? Atlanta Nail Salon Charges Fat People More for Services [VIDEO]

    Aug, 24 2010 | Written by ATLien

A 40 year old Atlanta woman recently faced a discriminatory price increase at a local nail salon.

Natural Nails, located just outside the Atlanta area in Lithonia, GA, claims they were worried that their expensive massage chairs might break, so they charged a customer an additional five dollars because she is overweight.

40 year old Michelle Fonville, (pictured above), said that she was “humiliated” when she discovered she had been overcharged because of her weight and left the salon in tears:

“I was letting my nails dry and was looking at the pricing list and realized that I had been overcharged,” Fonville told ABC News. “I said to the clerk that I thought I had accidentally been overcharged, I honestly thought it was an error. But when she came over and wrote out the prices she then said, ‘I charged you five dollars more because you’re overweight,’” said Fonville.

Fonville, who had been at the salon getting what she described as a burnt orange color painted on her finger and toenails as well as an eyebrow wax, said that she was preparing for a family reunion that was held last weekend in North Carolina.

She now says she’ll never go back to the salon after the owner drove her to tears.

Employees who answered the phone at Natural Nails declined to comment on the allegations to ABC News, and said that Kim Tan, the manager Fonville says charged her the fee, was not available.

But Tan told ABC News’ Atlanta affiliate WSB-TV that the chairs in her salon can only hold 200 pounds and cost $2,500 to repair.

“Do you think that’s fair when we take $24 dollars and we have to pay $2,500 [in repairs]?” Tan said. “I said to her I’m sorry, but next time I cannot take you.”

Tan also said that she charged Fonville extra because it took longer to do her nails. Fonville said that Tan, who returned her five dollars, told her not to come back to the salon anymore because of her weight.

“Then I couldn’t believe that another human would treat someone like that. She had such a matter-of-fact attitude,” said Fonville. “And I’m sure that other people have been treated like this and have no idea.”

Fonville plans a protest outside the salon later this week, hoping to spread the word about what she calls “discriminatory practices” by Natural Nails.

“Something needs to be done about this. You can’t discriminate against someone because of their weight,” said Fonville.

Natural Nails’ door should be closed immediately.

The heffa did not have sense enough not to give a statement. The salon owner better prepare to pay some damages.

Real sad, I am sure the lady told her she was too fat! They are super rude, probably attributed to their lack of english.

My wife told me she was @ a salon and a sister asked for some bright color for her nails and the lady told her, "no you cant wear that you too black."(Koreans) Even if she was, I dont think it was her place to tell her that, she was paying for a service, give her what she wants……..Are there any black nail techs?

ok its rude but, i mean… is she happy being overweight? if the chairs can only hold a certain weight, does she really want to go somewhere that does not have chairs that can support her weight? im sorry but, i am not in favor of overweight people who want to be treated like everyone else when clearly not everyone else 1. is overweight like them and 2. should have to buy special furniture to accomodate them. unless you have some medical reasoning for being overweight, im just not sympathetic. put down the fries and eat some apples.

oh and… although most of you wont agree with my above statement… I personally dont go to those nail shops unless everyone in there speaks english. f*ck them koreans.

Notabout to be popular, that’s your opinion, but you are rude and ignorant. No one deserves to be humiliated because of their weight. And the owner could have told her in private with respect, instead of embarrassing her. I hope she sues the crap out of the shop & their ignorant owner.

They do that up here in NY as well… my sister experienced something to that nature… and left feeling embarassed…personally if the chair can only hold up to 300 lbs, then she does have a right to decline the business, but she should have it posted somewhere in her shop…and she should have pulled the customer to the side before the service began…the way she went about it gave the lady ammunition to sue her…and I hope she does…

If the customer didn’t KNOW the chair would not hold her weight, then she can’t be completely at fault. She DID break the chair, but she didn’t know it couldn’t hold the weight.

Also, there is a WAY to say anything, at least there is if you comply with the rules of courtesy and respect.

I don’t think we have to be angry at people who happen to be Asian, but this particular woman just needs to learn tact.

If I were this woman, I WOULD PAY and then make it my business to bring this to the attention of others.

No one in the shop should have been happy with the way this woman was treated, either.

For one the nail shop owner is not Korean, she is Vietnamese. But of course, none of you would know the difference. Since I do not support obesity I do not feel bad for the lady. There is a difference between being overweight and obese. I saw this lady. She is OBESE. There will be an all out war against obesity in this country with more power than what happened to tobacco. Remember when we could smoke anywhere? Then they segregated smokers? Now? No one can smoke anywhere… Same goes for obesity. If you’re 30% above your healthy weight you are obese. First were the airlines, then the health insurance companies and soon it will take over. People in Atlanta (most of the South) are in denial and delusional when it comes to weight. They have no notion what is to be at a healthy weight. They blame their health problems on ‘genetics’ ‘bad blood’ ‘diabetes’; when all they have to do is walk around the block, replace the junk with raw veggies and fruits. In any event, I think the nail salon could have announced their surcharge. The owners are not stupid, they are traders and business owners and own several shops. All it is going to happen is they get a slap on the wrist and that is it.

I own a spa and completely understand parts of this. For more overweight people, costs of certain things such as waxing will be higher. There is more skin to wax, therefore using more strips, wax, and time. I charge by the hour and service and products. While it is extremely unfair to have to pay more because you weigh more just to get your nails done, waxing overweight people uses more products and time, increasing the price.

Well, I’m no skinny minny, and I don’t like the idea of companies focusing in on weight as a reason to raise cost for some and not others. But, the shop owner – though she had absolutely no decorum — might have a point. Not to mention, this is a private business and they have the right to service who they want.

We should note also that there are no laws out there that protect people of size, not even in the workplace. Remember Southwest people. If you’re overweight you have to pay your fair plus extra because you take up more seats.

I know it’s wrong on so many levels, but the shop owner has a right to make the rules as they see fit.

Now granted decorum and transparency should have been obvious, but they were not. These are not things that patrons should find out after the fact but they should be clearly stated before the customers sit down and receive services.

I live in koreatown and these mothafuckers are rude and dumb. I went to the nail shop and ol boy was doing my nails all funky and I told him to do them right. Then. He refused to them at all I was like oh hell no I’m paying for this and u better do it right. He was like I’m not doing them I said the hell u ain’t I aint moving till u do them he finally did them. But sometimes you need to get rude right back. I hate asians.

People treat black people like crap because we do not respect ourselves until we start loving ourselves, other people will start to catch on.

I do not agree how this woman was treated most people are not fat by choice it is genetics, i eat very healthy myself but i’m still big. If their business were professional they could have pulled her to side our chairs cannot support your weight sorry that would have been that. What customers have to keep in mind they can reserve right to serve you or not.

When are you black folk going to stop giving these chinks and egg rolls your hard earned money? Are there no black owned nail salons in Atlanta? If there are then go to them. Do business with your own people instead of the people who curse you in their own language and charge you more for the same service as everyone else. I GUARNTEE you that if a heavy set white woman came in there, they would not charge her an extra $5! Get it together people!

      p.s.
those asian nail salons are unclean and that’s where your fungus comes from.

I’m a plus size female who is also a nail teh student, and i know that those damn chairs hold more than 200lbs, hell, most our clients weigh more than that. I feel like salons and schools should do away with the pedicure thrones until a better one comes along that can accommadate obese people. I fit in the chair comfortably, even have room to move around, but the chairs at my school have been broken by people who are too damn fat to walk…they are being wheeled to the throne, and appear to be well over 500 lbs. I don’t feel like the lady should’ve been charged an extra fee, especially since she wasn’t advised of the problem. The Asians are rude, unsanitary, and I’d never give another dollar of my hard earned money to them. Hopefully she wins enough money to get her own spa and run them out of business.
