Shooting Star: The Rise of Hip-Hop Photographer Johnny Nunez (Video)
You see tons of celebrity photos on all the blogs everyday, but do you ever wonder who’s behind the camera? You may recognize photo service names like WireImage or Getty, but there’s one name in particular that is making waves all across the country on the hip-hop scene…. Johnny Nunez! I’ve run into him quite a few times, but never really had a real conversation until recently. It’s funny how life has a way of connecting you with people. He’s a totally cool dude and is the man behind many of your favorite hip-hop celebrity photographs, sometimes capturing them in classic unconventional poses. Check out a few of Johnny’s memorable shots below:
Beyonce & Jay-Z at the 40/40 Club
Ashanti & Nelly back in the day…
Teyana Taylor coppin a feel on Rihanna…
I really appreciate Johnny for his dedication to his work! I dunno how he does it but he always manages to get some of the most priceless shots. Johnny recently told me about his upcoming documentary, “Shooting Star: The Rise of Hip-Hop Photographer Johnny Nunez,” which shows his rise from taking celebrity photos to just about becoming one himself and I took a look at it last night. All I can say is that I was so impressed by Johnny’s hustle, I thought I’d share it.
Peep the video as well as a few more of his classic shots:

A few more of Johnny’s side-eye masterpieces:
Janet Jackson & Jermaine Dupri
Any urban A/B or even C list celeb that you could ever imagine has already been photographed by Johnny. He loves connecting with blogs and told me he has no problems seeing his images all around the web… well…except for this one site *cough* MediaFakeOut that continues to mark up his photos with crazy captions, but he’s dealing with that with his attorneys.
Despite all the drama involved in celebrity photos, Johnny has branded himself the “go-to” guy for national events. My Atlanta photographer friends might be feeling some kinda way right now, but even they know Nunez is a baaad mofo! Doesn’t matter. I’ll thank them too when they put out a video but right now… I just wanna officially say THANKS again to Johnny Nunez for so many memorable photos!

November 6, 2009 @ 2:14 pmI can vouch for that, I’ve met Johnny at a few events I’ve attended and he’s a very cool guy! Most recently I think I saw him at the Soul Train Awards, but didn’t get a chance to stop and speak, there was a lot going on. But he takes awesome shots and he’s EVERYWHERE! Great job with this story, he deserves his props!
