Hello every-body.
Sam, the essence of R&B escaped us in the late 70's early to mid 80's. Mary has been a good representation of what the generation that was born in the 90's and afterwards missed. I think she is a great entertainer for her time and will go down in the history of all genre's of music as an icon.
Her growth has been anything short of amazing, TO ME. In the early days I must admit I was not a fan I grew to appreciate her as I'm sure a lot of folks did. As a matter of fact Mary is the closest thing to the soul singers of my young life. Phyllis Hyman, Whitney Houston, Natlie Cole, Mikki Howard, Denise Williams, The Jones Girls, Sister Sledge, The Pointer Sisters, The Emotions, Minni Ripilton, Regina Belle, Anita Baker, Melba Moore and I know you guys have been watching Unsung on TV-1.
We really should give credit where credit IS due.

As far as lil Wayne goes, dude, I didn't care for him either until I really listened to Carter III. I had to go out and buy that CD. I am a sucker for street poetry especially when they touch me with their lyrics. I don't like any of the local repetitive crap that some of y'all like. The same beat that all the guys use to put two mindless words to. Maybe the same beat is good to dance to for you young folk but I think it stinks and what's worse is that y'all really be groovin to that shit.

I want to touch on I-Tunes, is that what they are calling it now and days? I think I heard Jay-Z make some kind of negative comment about it in a new song he's releasing. I know I heard Frank Ski from V-103 say something negative about it and he know betta. Zapp and Roger who really used that tool a lot back in the 80's sort of coined that sound. It is very indicative of the 80's pop culture and that is whats happening right now, right? I was a teenager in the 80's and synthesized music is what we called it was really hot, as a matter of fact, Miles Davis used some of that sound on his last works.

It's the trend.

I've always likeed that Mary was honest. She didn't sugar coat ish...I think their are women (people) who benefit from her honesty.

As far as folk not happy that she's happy - I mean do you really want her to ascribe to the Em school of making music: let me make myself a miserable as possible so I can have a hit cd.

I feel you Sam...but what you see as BS other's feel is innovative. Mary's just choosing to work with the trends right now. I'm not saying it's right, but it is what it is.

And I have to disagree with you on the music of the past. It was SAD "A"zz hell. She was always singing bout her man cheating or dealing with being the other woman or crying all day and all night. Come on now. Be for real. Just because she's working with Lil Wayne and nem doesn't negate the fact that she is still an icon. I'm just happy she's still in demand cause I love her screaming "A"zzzzz :-)
